That's a big jump. I thought 10/600 was on table with Toronto.  He gets 10/700 from LA? Like 620-640 wasn't enough to outbid Tor the last high bidder standing?  How many dual seasons played does he need to accumulate say 500M? Once his pitching career goes by the wayside, there's no way he's performing offensely he's worth his seasonally pay of 70M.

Let the offseason honestly take off with ohtani no longer waiting who thr winner was

I imagine that $700M was just slightly out of reach for the Brewers. Too bad.  If I only had attended a few more games last year...

Attanasio is such a cheapskate.

So Ohtani is going to make more than how many teams next year?

It's sad that the Dodgers will be paying Ohtani about 6 whole years of the entire Brewers payroll. On top of that it sounds like a lot of the money is differed so they will probably still have money to get another top of the rotation arm or 2.

The Dodgers are going to be celebrating “Shohei Ohtani day” in 2050.

The deal goes through the 2034 season, so I'm thinking longer than that.

Considering he won’t pitch next year, we should ask for the farm from the Dodgers for Burnes.

Dodgers will probably turn around and buy Yamamoto and Blake Snell as well. They don't need to trade for Burnes.

Well tbf- Ohtani has actually accumulated enough FG value on both sides to provide 70M+ value.  But just barely.  Peak season this year's bat and last season pitching he hits 97M value provided.  Now of course, he's not pitching to start this contract off.  He'll see more PAs to build on a 53M 184OPS+ FA season....but in the NL ballparks West vs AL. Obviously didn't stop Bonds.  Actually this could be a fantastic season to be a fan where he's peak age and batting production season to go have a historic season.  We all knew he was destined over half Billion.  Surprised it hit 700M.

Luxury tax I imagine for LA.  QO to Burnes or any FA by them is what a 3rd? Or 4th rd pick? Can't trade Burnes to a team who isn't getting bottom 1st rd compensation.  Unless that trade happens in July.

I don't get the argument of deferred $ helping the Dodgers sign more guys, it's for Ohtani's tax purposes most likely.  The upfront money the Dodgers save will most likely just be paid into the luxury tax.

That $70m AAV is going to permanently have the Dodgers way over the luxury tax limit....meaning they'll be paying a ton of tax dollars and have their top draft pick position docked 10 or so spot each season

Sure, but Ohtani generates a massive amount of revenue being the biggest star from Japan.

So that 70M a year...still an outrageous number, but I don't think it'd be like giving Soto 70M a year. You're making a LOT of money back from having Ohtani on your team.

One article I just read estimated that Ohtani generated 20M a year for the Angels, a number that is expected to be much higher for the Dodgers, a more high-profile team and a 100-win-a-year team.

Assuming "most" of the money is in deferrals, the contract becomes even more "less ridiculous," and starts coming...close to maybe making some sense.

Shohei Ohtani is the greatest baseball player in history…but I am trying to actually believe he is worth $70mil. 29 years old isn’t all that young to be starting this contract out and he has been made of glass pitching wise. If he was a workhorse with the glove and bat I could see it…but yikes considering his fragile arm.

Crazy stuff. I’m honestly shocked he blew past the record AVV like he did.

The players union will never allow it, but MLB needs a hard salary cap and floor. NOW! 🤦‍♂️

The players union will certainly go for one of the two.

But the ship has sailed on the other long ago. As a Packers fan, I think about what Wellington Mara and what he did for the NFL. How he made it grow and surge past MLB by not grabbing as much cash as he could at the time, and being open to revenue sharing.

I'll always be a Brewers fan, but...deals like this show you're just in a whole other universe. Oh well, farm systems, player development win. I mean, signing historically great players for the GDP of most European countries helps, but, it's not the only thing. Yup...I'll keep convincing myself of that.

I remember arguing with someone on Twitter who said he wouldn't get 40M a year. I said I thought he'd get 50(which was hardly a rare take, it was the consensus) but I thought he'd get 12-13 years. To get 70M PER year? Even with the money he brings in and with the deferred money, it is insane.

Not sure how accurate all,of this is but Passan usually gets stuff close to right?

Honestly should just get rid of deferring money if we starting seeing 50% of contracts get deferred.

Do we think this increases or decreases the odds of the Dodgers trading for Burnes or does it have no impact?  Their lineup is deadly but their pitching still needs a lot of work.

I think it increases their willingness to part with the necessary prospects for Burnes. Friedman has also been a prospect hoarder to an extent, so this deal helps counteract that by making them more desperate to win a WS with the Betts, Freeman, Ohtani core.

Of course, the same also applies to Glasnow and Cease, so we'll see. I don't see them being involved with Yamamoto now.

Not so fast my friend:

With Ohtani and Yamamoto they would own the Japanese market.

Saw on MLBTR that Roki Sasaki has asked to be posted too.

Sounds like it won’t happen this winter, but if he does get posted before turning 25 (just turned 22) he would only be eligible to sign as a minor league FA under the international bonus pool versus signing as an MLB free agent by waiting three years.
