Wow… nice take. Don’t include that rookie year

Hiura hit for a 139 wRC+ with a .402 BABIP and 30.7 K% his rookie year (348 PAs).

Since then he has hit for an 88 wRC+ with a .302 BABIP and 38.2 K% (717 PAs).

Keston's subsequent performance has rendered his rookie year performance of minimal predictive value, especially when considering how juiced the ball was in 2019 (.769 league OPS) versus now in 2024 (.707 league OPS).

If it were really that simple Hiura wouldn't have a .207 batting average and 38.2 K% in the 717 major league plate appearances he has taken since his rookie season.

It really is that simple.

It's just not that easy.

So we may never really know what his true potential is.

I hope he gets a fair shot with the Angels so we can find that out...

While obviously not the same caliber of competition, failing to include any mention of Hiura's overall production in the high minors from 2021 through 2024 (916 plate appearances, largely indicating Hiura is more than a AAA player) is also statistical cherry picking over a ~5 season stretch of baseball from the Covid-shortened 2020 through the present 2024 season.

Sure,  but that also means three different clubs have coached him and not been able to get the hole in his swing closed either. That tells me, more probably true than not, he isn’t ever going to do it.

This year, Hiura has been with two organizations and hit well enough to get called up by the 2nd one in roughly a couple weeks of regular AAA playing time with them.  Hiura didn't break camp with the Tigers following Spring Training because they had their own logjam of high draft choice hitters who were underperforming already on their 40 man roster they had longer commitments to.  Hiura wasn't cut from the Tigers because he was terrible this year with Toledo - he was cut because Torkelson sucked at the MLB level and needed a spot to get regular ABs in the minors.

If he has that gaping a hole in his swing, he wouldn't be putting up the numbers he is this season cumulatively - regardless of the level he's at.

Success in baseball is all about making adjustments.  Hiura came up in 2019 and hit like gangbusters because the league hadn't figured him out yet.  Once they realized he had a giant hole in his swing pitchers made adjustments to exploit it.  Now it's on Keston to make the adjustments to combat it.  Is it possible?  Yes.  Is it likely?  Doubtful, since it's been four years and he still hasn't done it.

with at least half of that time not getting a legitimate MLB opportunity to sort it out one way or the other - when healthy, all Hiura has done since the start of 2023 has been hit at the AAA level, with enough production to warrant another extended MLB opportunity with somebody.

He's a horrible defender. Maybe he's thought of a little differently if he was adequate at 2nd base.

A lot of fringe major leaguers can hit AAA pitching.  Clearly from what the Brewers saw from Keston's swing last year, they didn't think it would translate to major league success.

He got a minor league deal in the offseason and then Detroit released him. I'm sure all the MLB teams have access to his AAA stats and tape to determine whether or not he can hit in the bigs. Hopefully he turns it around but based on lack of interest, MLB teams are skeptical.

Hiura wasn't cut from the Tigers because he was terrible this year with Toledo

Hiura posted an 82 wRC+ over 199 PAs with Toledo - that is pretty terrible.

Would love to grab him and give him the proper chance in a Brewers uniform.  Can the pitching lab work its magic?  No way this kid is done, let's et him back!

Rangers designated LHP Antoine Kelly for assignment.

Kelly was the prospect the Rangers got from the Brewers for Matt Bush two years ago, and he was added to the 40-man after last season. He was a terrific minor league reliever last year, posting a 2.04 ERA and a 79/23 K/BB in 57 1/3 innings between Double- and Triple-A, but he had a 9.35 ERA and a 24/22 K/BB in 17 1/3 innings this season.

Our 40 man is already a mess. We really can't reasonably claim Kelly.

FanSided speculates that the Brewers may trade for Flaherty. Has anyone heard anything about this?

That would surprise me but given his back issues this year maybe they think they can get him at a discount?

.882 OPS overall, 18 HRs in all of 2024…so pretty good (but stats do not count for Hiura, even mlb #s in 2022).

The #'s he has been putting up this year??? With nine at bats??? LMAO, that is like 2 games.

he was responding specifically to a question about Toledo.
