Does anyone have any idea on how often mutual options get exercised? Seems like the option year comes, the contract is either going to be favorable to the team or the player, based on how he performed the previous year.  So, I feel like its rare for both sides to opt "yes".

I think it's generally used to defer money until next year's payroll.

Basically never. Nearly every historical example involves a really old player that basically has no interest in going somewhere else (played with one team really long), the option is close enough to market value, and both sides consider it good enough. Brewers have one of the very rare accepted mutual options. That was Aramis Ramirez, who only signed with us because his list of teams he would consider were midwest teams only. So, it made sense for both sides.

In the case of Woodruff, it is VERY obvious it exists only to put most of the money in 2026 where our payroll has basically no money committed to it at the moment. There is essentially zero chance Woodruff would be worth $10mil and would not go to FA to get a multi-year deal...probably his only decent chance to get one left.

I always thought the buyout on the mutual option was activated when either side decided to decline that option.   With that big of a number, I wonder if its structured so that assuming he is healthy and pitching well in 2025 - that they both actually execute it.    Since it seems he wants to be here, Brewers want him here - $20m isn't a bad price for him.

I guess he could also decline, get the $10m - and go get $20m on the open market too.   Interesting structure.

I would bet that it was the Cardinals, as I thought I saw a rumor that they had at least talked to him.

At least we know what was holding it up all this time.

I don't remember who, but someone here thought he would get 15 to 17 million in 2025.  lol

I'm not sure anyone else agreed, but that was pretty far off the mark.   No one predicted the 26 mutual buyout though.

Worth the risk IMO.  What if Woody decides to stay for 2026 and he pitches like the Woody of old?  We get 2 years of Woody for $27.5M (adding in the $2.5M for 2024).  That would be very good.  On the flip side.  If he pitches like the Woody of old in 2025 and opts out, we pay $17.5M for 1 good year.  That is fair value.  The only way the Brewers get "screwed" is if he sucks and his career is done.  Then we pay $2.5M this year and $15M next year for a guy who is washed up.  Probably does very little to hurt our chances to compete given how many young, cheap players we have.

If he’s Woody of old you are never going to get him for 2 years  27.5 Million.

He will opt out.

This is a 1 year 17 million dollar deal structured in a way that is advantageous to the team.

It’s a mutual option not an option just for Woody.

I'm curious to know the nature of the buyout in this contract.  Most common scenario is the buyout occurs no matter which side declines the mutual option.  But, apparently that is not always the case.

Interesting stuff……he apparently was ready to sign with another team….but ended up with the Brewers. Also definitely not pitching in 24…..not that it’s a surprise

I don't see where it says "definitely not pitching in '24." It was more along the lines of 'not thinking about when/if he'll be back this year, he'll see how it goes, but he'll definitely be back in '25.'

That article is waaay longer and different than it was this morning. I believe earlier it pretty much said no.

Ok...not like '24 is a huge factor in how this deal plays out beyond just him getting healthy.

I wouldn't imagine they'd count on it, but hadn't seen they'd totally ruled it out.

Either way, very happy to have him back in the fold.
