I find it odd that we haven't gotten any stories, info, or even mention of what Rickie Weeks has been doing for spring training. Or how he views his job. Or anything, really. Inquiring minds want to know!

Weeks had an interview a few days ago, although it's a light one that doesn't really dig into his focus areas at Spring Training - minutes 22-37 of the February 21 podcast labelled Black History Always Special on 101.7 The Truth

Probably showing the team all the breaking balls off the outside corner he used to swing at.  I have to imagine that would take 2-3 weeks

The only 2 I know of are Rickie and Jemile.

I don’t find it odd……he’s the bench coach……I,understand because of his status as a former player there is curiosity but did we see any stories about what Murphy was doing in spring training? I don’t recall any.

I’m sure he is learning on the job since he’s never been in this position.

As long as he isn't teaching bunting, or giving a seminar on the willingness to learn to do so. Fortunately for him he's coaching in an era where that art is an afterthought.

He’s never known he was going to manage an MLB club heading into spring training, so I guess he’s never been in this specific position, but he did manage the Padres for 96 games back in 2015.

He was also a head coach at Norte Dame and ASU for over 20 years.

There will no doubt be some degree of a learning curve, but it shouldn’t be too steep given his past histories in the dugout and working collaboratively with this front office group for almost a decade now.

I was talking about Weeks not Murphy.

That's my question. It felt like (to me, anyways) that Weeks was hired as the manager-in-waiting. Murph is not a young man, and has had health issues. If they have great success this year (or maybe next) then he may stay around for a while, but Weeks still seems to be in a little bit of a different position than other bench coaches. They are usually guys like Murph that are veterans, there for their game knowledge more than their future potential. I feel like Weeks is there to learn to manage.

I don't think it was with the intention of making him the heir apparent. I think he was hired to learn more roles so they can find the right fit whatever that may be. If that leads to being a manager one day it just means they think his abilities fit that role.

There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.

Perhaps. In that case, working in various front office positions would seem to make more sense. To me, anyways. I hope the team does so well that Murph ensures himself the job for five years or so.

How much coverage of Murphy and was there in the counsell era. It’s like the vice president, it’s only an issue if the the president leaves office, of in baseball terms the manager gets fired or ejected

Weeks couldn’t catch pop ups in short right field, how is he expected to manage? :)

I do remember that GS off the glass though :)

What's that old saying - those can't can't, teach?

Far easier to show what not to do than what to do.  It is why most coaches were bad or just average baseball players.  Hitting coaches for example some of the best hitters in the game are one of the worst hitting coaches.  Tony Gwynn and Ted Williams being the prime examples of this.
