There are many Brewers that were here much longer that never had a month like Owen Miller had in May 2023. Not much of a loss however if he gets claimed.

I thought Vinny Capra was going to be the guy. With DL Hall and Devin Williams needing 40 man slots soon we may see a few other tough decisions.

Can you tell me what the news has been on Devin Williams? Have I missed the Brewers updating his progress? Google search has an article from May 18, I feel like no news is not good news in this case.

He either just threw off the mound for the first time or is about to.

There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.

Maybe it's time to give up on Tyler Black actually mastering a position and just go the Brad Miller route - let Black loose all over the field, demonstrating versatility and athleticism while making mistakes.

Or he’s a 1B/DH on a team where he’s totally blocked this year.

It’s  too bad Bauers is under team control for 2025, absent a 2nd half offensive tear Hoskins probably isn’t opting out either. So Black remains blocked or could be trade material in the right deal.

I didn't know Bauers could be back next year.  But still, he's only been ok and would seem an easy one to not give arby to and let go or trade in the Taylor/Houser type way, keeping in mind they're likely going to need 40 man spots.   It's also an easy spot to save a couple mil by going with Black instead of Bauers.    But hopefully Bauers goes nuts to finish the year so they have no choice but to keep him

This past offseason was Bauers 1st year of arbitration. He's controllable through 2026.  That being said, he's been replacement level all year (0.0 WAR).  I'd like to think Black would be just as good right now with higher upside.  This has been Bauers best season in the majors, which isnt that inspiring for a 1b. Its the defense that is keeping Jake on the team.

At least Miller can get a pinch hit or 2 at the major league level.  What does keeping Capra accomplish??

I don’t know. Bauers has the better power profile, he plays corner OF, 1B, can steal a base. Certainly he has warts with the high strike out rate, but a good depth piece and Hoskins is likely to see the bulk of starts at 1B anyway

This is quite an encouraging article about Mitchell’s rehab stint.

Obviously it’s not the majors but pretty impressive nonetheless

There are 47 players with at least 100 PAs at 1B this season.  Bauers ranks #22 in terms of fWAR (0.4) but 35th in PA's; his fWAR per PA is above league average for 1B.  Only 24 players with >100 PAs at 1B have positive fWAR, only 12 have a fWAR at this point of 1.0 or greater, and 40% (21 of 47) have a negative fWAR.

If all one cares about is offense, he ranks #21 of 47 in wRC+.  I agree that Black has more upside, but Bauers has value.  He's been better, statistically, than over half of his peers (including Paul Goldschmidt).

You have to be careful with Bauers WAR because of his weird outfield splits. Basically all his hitting has come playing as an OFer. His splits are 79 wRC+ at 1b, 192 in LF and 237 in RF.  His broken down WAR total may be really weird especially since he is terrible defensively in the outfield.

His wRC+ overall is likely in line making him like a Ty France without a past showing he can hit.  My guess is France does not get offered arbitration at season end and gets like 1 year $5 million contract somewhere. So that puts Bauers value at maybe $2m?

There is definitely no path to playing time for Black this year unless someone gets injured.

Even at 2+ million dollars I don’t think the Brewers will be quick to move on from Bauers when he’s appeared in 75% of their games and has the most PAs off the bench. Further, Hoskins is sitting at a -0.1 WAR on the season and has an 18 million dollar guarantee for ‘25. Odds are narrowing he opts out of that guarantee. So even if they do move on from Bauers at least 50% of the time Hoskins will be at 1B.
Having not played OF as a professional, Black probably needs to play 3B to have a shot at regular PT in the majors in ‘25.

Long story short: it’s a good problem for the Brewers to have when they have former first round picks who are blocked from regular playing time in the majors.

With small market teams, a case could be made that it's not a good problem, because then they should take advantage of the surplus of prospects, and use some like him to try and better their major league roster now. Especially when it's looking like they could do damage in the playoffs if they get a starter or 2 and maybe another solid bench bat.

I wouldn’t be shocked if one of Black, Frelick, or Mitchell is playing for a different team in August 1st.
