Love these threads for two reason!

1) It means we are usually doing pretty good, and are in the hunt or leading the division race.

2) Love seeing random and obscure Brewers used.

I was wondering how long it would take for a new thread to start up.

I never figured out how he was so effective throwing a fastball the topped out in the low 80s by the time he was closing for the Brewers, but Doug Jones had an excellent tenure in Milwaukee. Plus he had a great old-school look. RIP Legend!

That Late 90's uniform too just before Miller Park very underrated. The tweaks they made to the 1994 rebrand were great for this time period. I think they finally started selling these hats again at Lids.

I like the late 90's look. It just wasn't as great as the Ball and Glove so people consider it bad.

James Austin seeming came out of nowhere to put up a terrific 1.85 ERA in 47 games out of the Brewers' crazy-good 1992 pen, and followed it up with another solid partial season in 1993 before injuries derailed his promising career.

Ah, The Vulture. A master of picking up wins out of the bullpen & an unsung hero of the '82 team.

Jim Slaton, “The Vulture”? I think you are referring to Brent Suter. Slaton was an extremely valuable Brewer pitcher of the 70’s and 80’s. He also brought Ben Oglivie to the Brewers in a 1977 trade with the Tigers and had more than a half dozen excellent seasons pitching in Milwaukee. He played a major role in the bullpen and as a swing starter with the ‘82 World Series team,

Between 1982 and 1983, Slaton was credited with a combined 24 wins despite starting only seven games.  More prominent in 1983, when he was credited with 14 wins despite not starting a single game.

That 1983 season was something looking back.  Zero starts, 112 innings pitched, 14 wins, 56 walks, 38 K's.

The best "vulturing" Suter did was 12 wins in 2021 despite starting only one game.

Slaton was given that moniker decades before Suter. He was a long-time starter, then after they traded for Pete Vuckovich & decided to make a starter out of Bob McClure he went to mostly a middle-inning/setup role, starting seven games in '82 & none in '83. He then went on to start quite a bit for the Angels.

He won ten games in '82, a number of them out of the bullpen which is what gave him the nickname, I suspect hung on him by Vuckovich or Gorman Thomas.

You're right, he was very valuable. It was a real coup when they were able to get Oglivie for him, then after a year in Detroit get him back via FA.

Forgot about '83, he was even more of a scavenger that year. Guys coming into a game in the 6th or 7th inning & winning that many games was a rarity at that time. In an era when W-L records meant a lot more for a pitcher, it's easy to understand why he took the good-natured abuse.

My bad…sorry!
