Expected move and I definitely think the correct move. I like having the 2 long guys in the pen for now. The real question will be after the doubleheader on 9/30. I imagine Hall will be called up to pitch that game and does he stay up or go back down burning his final option year in the process.

Joe Ross DFA will be coming soon for Paredes I'd imagine, and they'll still have to make room for Zastryzny. I also hope Yoho and Miz see time in the majors at some point but some touch decisions will have to be made with the bullpen within the next few weeks.

Williams, Megill, Koenig, Hudson, Payamps, Mears are locks to remain in the pen, imo. Paredes and Zastryzny for Wilson and Ross leaves the Brewers without a long relief arm. When rosters expand that creates an extra spot for one of Yoho or Miz. But pitcher limit is still 14.

Seems like Zastryzny could be the odd-man out in favor of keeping Wilson around to eat innings despite how effective Zastryzny was in his limited major league sample.

Thoughts on the upcoming/current bullpen logjam?

Paredes isn't eligible to come off the IL until September 1st, so he still has almost 2 weeks before that could happen.

Also Zastryzny left his 8/13 rehab assignment with a trainer and has not pitched again since then, so he might not be healthy enough to pitch again this year.

I am not knowledgeable about how this works, so pardon my ignorance here. What is the situation with Milner? Can they just keep him on the IL, or do they have to do something with him relatively soon?

once he is deemed healthy he can go on rehab and then the clock starts ticking…….or he can return without rehab……which doesn’t happen often.

He was placed on the 15 day il on August 11…….so 15 days after that is the earliest he could return.

I was assuming the Brewers want pitchers other than Milner in the pen if all these other guys are healthy and effective. If that's the case, what do they have to do with Milner and when (thus my previous question about keeping him on the IL)?

That don’t have to do anything until he is deemed healthy…….we all suspect this is a minor/phantom injury but none of us really know for sure so to make a long explanation short…….I wouldn’t worry about it…….he will either be on the injured list for the rest of the season or…..go on rehab when healthy……and then either return or be dfa.

I think it's fortunate that Peguero still has the option left. Let's not forget 2023; he's capable of pitching at a high level & unless he's included in a trade I like the idea of having him with the team next spring camp. But for now it's certainly the right move.

They do seem to like two bulk-innings guys in the BP but Ross seems vulnerable to me after the doubleheader. I think Hall stays, Ross goes and..........they also had an affinity for 3 one-inning LH types in the pen, but Milner might have little left in his 2024 tank & Zastryzny is a question mark. So Paredes seems to fit the timeline, unless by that time they just can't deny Yoho anymore or Misiorowski continues to throw strikes as a reliever.

We have Peguero, Hall, Herget, Yoho, and Misiorowski in AAA and Milner, Paredes, and Zastryzny on the IL.  I'm sure there are a couple of MLB teams that would do a full swap out of their bullpen for that.

I wish roster expansion wasn't so stingy now.  Just a couple more slots would do wonders for us.  40 may have been excessive, especially when we were actually carrying 37.  Who knows what kind of crazy stuff could have been run out of our bullpen in September with a roster size that large.

Tough luck for Elvis. He would be in the pen of the majority of the teams in baseball.

Crew could have and should have dealt him at the deadline, IMO. They could have scored a 2025 competitive balance pick or a nice nugget or two from some AL team's farm system.

Bukauskas is another guy I like a lot.  Unfortunately for him, he was on a rehab assignment and took a line drive on his arm.  I don’t know if he can get healthy in time this year.  This is a player with a very good pedigree coming out of UNC and seems to have started figuring it out.  Maybe he starts fresh in 2025 and hopefully he can be a factor.

I think it was Jack or maybe Curt who mentioned on the pod that the comebacker wasn't what hurt him. It was an oblique issue that had him removed. Just a coincidence that it happened the same play as the comebacker I guess.

Not to derail the thread, but what is the motivation in the first place with expanded rosters? Why do they expand at all?

Just a guess. But I would think a) Gives teams an opportunity to reward up and comers with a cup of coffee, and b) Gives teams a chance to bring in reinforcements at the end of a long brutal marathon of a season.

And c) gives teams an excuse to not play veterans who may be approaching incentives that guarantee money or option years, which is why the player's union wanted it done away with.

It is nice that we have that option (pun intended) to manage the pen.  While I think Elvis was misused a bit with bringing him on with runners on base... it is hard to treat him special like that too.

He is such an enigma as a pitcher.  He stuff is just filthy, but he can't seem to find lasting results with it.

"Rock, sometime, when the team is up against it, and the breaks are beating the boys, tell 'em to go out there with all they got and win just one for the Uecker. I don't know where I'll be then, Rock but I'll know about it; and I'll be happy."

I like Elvis and not really for trading him as he is a cheap bullpen piece for a number of years still and has shown he can be effective. However, it was necessary with everybody coming back and Megill is an obvious upgrade.

Joe Ross will be gone by the end of the month but for now they mantain depth an he can eat up garbage innings. Would keep Zastryzny over Ross as Zastryzny is a cheap replacement  for Milner next year.

They do have to look at the potential playoff roster and it is highly unlikely that Bryse Wilson pitches an inning in the playoffs. They need to bring up Yoho or Miz and see if they are a viable option to help during the playoff run.

The minor league season also used to be over by the first week of September.  So there would always be September 1 call-ups, then a second batch when the AAA season ended.  Teams would just bring them up to avoid recalling a player in late September who hadn't participated in baseball activities for weeks.  Now that the AAA season extends into late September, there's more regular option/recall activity still happening.

I couldn’t stand when he would get on the mound. My buttchecks would pucker just a little bit.

I believe it's true that he doesn't burn the option if he spends fewer than 20 days in the minors? It's quite possible that this is a bit of roster shenanigans until the next inevitable IL stint. I don't think this means they are moving on from Peguero who is still a good bet to be on the playoff roster and is still pre-arby with yet another option if needed.

Still feels like a tough call or three yet to come; do you put Milner on waivers, for example? (Would presumably have to activate him from IL first.) Then again, while I'm sure some would like that, I don't think the team moves on so quickly from relievers as some fans; remember many were ready to DFA Payamps at one point and he's been quite effective of late.

Spots on the 26 seem momentarily tougher than the 40 but that is also an issue. They can still move Yeli to the 60 day IL for one spot on the 40, and Ross seems a likely DFA at some point, but seems like they are serious about adding one or more of Misio, Yoho, maybe even Logan Henderson, in addition to activating Paredes? (Henderson may be a longshot but unlike the others this is year to be added or be Rule 5 eligible, and if they add him and keep him on the roster they don't burn an option this year. Either Misio or Yoho are likely to be impactful in the 'pen but both have more forgiving Rule 5 clocks.)

Not even the next injury.  Ross stays on and pitches the 1st game of the DH on 8/30.  For the second game, Peguero is called up to be the extra player and Hall is called up to replace the DFA'd Ross.  Hall stays up, keeping his option year in-tact.  Peguero goes down for 8/31 and gets called up 9/1, preserving his option.

Not deserving of a send down on an avg bullpen team….still played big innings for us. He’s up against it with the quality of arms this year.
