He's not getting any meaningful amount of PT, but I think it's telling Collins stuck while Hicklen was (predictably) optioned. Collins is just such a nice player who can do a bit of everything and improves and fine-tunes at every successive stop up the ladder.

I'd certainly play Haase all 3 games this weekend against a playoff staff to see where his bat is. If he continues to rake, I'd consider it based on how badly Sanchez is slumping.

Hard to consider Sanchez as slumping since he rarely gets at bats...

This ump has transcended bad to the point I actually think he has money on this game in some form.

And you could argue that wasn't even the worst call of the game.

I like that sneaky covert ploy to keep Devin fresh.

"Mearsy, give em another crack over da fence. Let Devin work."

(Once again, Mears flashed that appealing IVB - 22" today. Gotta get in the Lab. The stuff still has all the raw goods. Gotta sharpen it up)

91 wins. Not bad for a retooling year. Only need one more to match last season's win total.

This team was so much better to follow than last year

Those white sox showing some fight.  They don’t want that record

Hey, their Double-A Birmingham Barrons team just took the Southern League title (very surprisingly, given their second half) beating both Tennessee and Montgomery. Both better on paper. Take that lead Sox and call it a tie!

I don’t know. Mears looks like another reliever deadline acquisition bust (Ray Black, Jon Curtiss, Daniel Norris, Matt Bush, Taylor Rogers, Chafin). The common thread is they either get rocked every third time out or miss a big chunk of time with an injury.  So far Mears has a little of both.

Did Angel Hernandez pass away & I didn't hear about it? Because it sure seemed like Manny Gonzalez called balls & strikes today in his memory. Wow was he terrible.

Montas' last outing aside, it looks like both starters we picked up have earned their keep, and with Rae & (maybe) Myers backsliding a bit it's very timely.

In closing out our sked vs the NL Central, my closing comments re the division are:

Pete Crow-Armstrong resembles Dobie Gillis, and

Oniel Cruz, if you glance sideways, looks a little like Aunt Esther from "Sanford & Son".

Apologies to those of you that aren't fans of classic TV.

Basically our position-player shuttle consisted of Tyler Black & some AAAA types. Since Black never caught hold I guess Collins is the best option due to the versatility. I'm a fan; I just wish the few ABs he's gotten looked a little less------I don't know if 'overmatched' is the right word. I'd like to see him get a few trips to the plate this weekend.

I'd rather have Herget.  Aso makes the roster spot interesting if they want C-Rod to eat some innings this weekend or get Hudson an appearance before the playoffs.

I agree - Mears has not been good since he arrived from Colorado & he had a 5+ ERA there

While this game had no real importance, I was really glad the Brewers won.

it would have bugged me if they had lost the season series to the Pirates.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

Methinks it might be time to end the season for Mears, send him to the pitching lab and see if they can find out what is going on. Great stuff, great arm, but the results just aren't there.

Mears' problem appears to be his fastball. It's straight as a string. No movement. Hitters sit fastball and t-off when they see it. He has to learn a two seamer or a change-up to keep hitters off his #1.

Matt Bush got a couple months and an IL stint into his first full season before he was DFA'd. I see Mears getting a similar leash.

It really just makes no sense. He has a 35% K-rate, 33% whiff rate but then a .482 xwOBACON against as a Brewer.

It's like he's tipping but only some hitters are able to recognize what he's doing to tip. It's been very all or nothing from him.

My money is on HR/FB% being almost completely random and to expect him to regress toward his excellent stuff and peripherals.

Free Haase!

I agree, I also agree it would have to be DH.  But ...

I did look into his history and he did play out field as his second most played position besides catching.
