I was taken aback with that public comment, too.

I really like Pratt as a high-floor prospect. He's a sure-fire average to plus infielder, depending on the position. His bat isn't special, but he seems to have a well-rounded hitting profile so that he'll be able to put together competitive at bats when he reaches the Show.

Guys that can walk into 6 years of team control with 3 options and not have disqualifying holes in their game derive value from their ability to show up everyday and help you win, rather than by anchoring a playoff lineup, or hitting like an All-Star.

Yeah I’m with you there. I still have Pratt as a 50 FV prospect because I think he’s very likely to stick at SS but I’ve seen nothing from his bat yet that would make me believe he will be a really good MLB hitter. There’s just very little damage because he seems to have middling bat speed. Someone got a lot of grief recently for saying he was Arcia-esque but I feel like that’s not horribly off. I think there’s a ton of people just assuming he will eventually hit for power because he’s a bigger guy but I just don’t see it yet.

This could be a really fun month and a half. What happens if Ortiz and Durbin continue to be worthy of playing everyday??

That would be ideal. Our lineup seems setup well to make the playoffs with slightly above average hitters. The problem with that is it's difficult to make meaningful upgrades to make trades worth it.

We have to hope that Yelich and Chourio play like All-stars. Unfortunately Contreras isn't the same because of the injury

Do we need to be buyers, if we're getting avg or better results from the likes of Ortiz, Durbin, and Collins, and especially Yelich, the last 15 games or so? Miz' addition?

We will have an abundance of starters soon. Any chance we could turn Quintana or Cortes into something useful? It seems like many teams are wanting to buy so maybe we find a taker.

The Tigers could use another starter. Not that this helps us this season, but...

Tigers: Cortes

Brewers: Comp A draft pick

Too much for Cortes.

Maybe but history has shown those picks haven't been valued a ton in trades

Id target Suarez and otherwise pass on this deadline as I like the pitching and position guys enough as is.   I’d be willing to deal them Boeve and Wichowski at most though but would prefer a lesser pitcher.

If we can trade Cortes in a three way deal of sorts where whatever we get for him we ship for Suarez, that would be ideal.

Tobias Myers for Suarez might be of interest to the dbacks.   Straight up.

They would laugh hysterically, and then without saying a word, promptly hang up the phone.

I don’t necessarily agree or disagree. Tobias has about 5 years of cheap service left and could turn into a nice 3rd or4th starter, not bad, Suarez has a half year of marginal cost service left for a very nice power 3B. That is a 10:1 ratio in terms of service time. Convince me Suarez is more than ten times better.

In addition, Gallen and Kelly are both FAs at the end of the year. And Burnes will likely miss the start of the year.  They are probably going to need SP next year unless Gallen/Kelly take team friendly deals to stay (presumably they would have done so already if that was the case though)

That said, I'm not exactly tuned into how Tobias has been doing in AAA.

He's been really good. ERA under 3. In most other seasons he would have been brought back up already..

Cortes if heathy could be our ace come playoff time and has his free agent dollars hinging on performing well.   I’d tread very lightly moving him even with our surplus of starting pitching.

If the Brewers are trading any starter, it should be Quintana instead of Cortes.

Exactly zero general managers act in this way.

I'm sure you realized that the point, is the phone call would most likely be very short.

Agreed, whatever we get for Quintana would be the same as for Cortes which spring training time would be ludicrous .   Sell high on Quintana not low on Cortes (if we must move a starter).

If we’re shopping at the Diamondbacks store, Josh Naylor would sure be nice, but that isn’t happening. This probably isn’t the year to take a big shot anyway.

Would CJ Abrams from Washington cost too much?  Looking for something to light a fire under the ss position.

I'm not as familiar with the prospects...  Boeve + KC Hunt for Abrams?

You’d need substantially more to get 3.5 seasons of Abrams

Would need to add at least Pratt and Logan Henderson, if not more to that offer.
