To me, the story isn’t that we traded Jorge Quintana. It’s that we had to do it in a salary dump.

I’m not one of those people who thinks Attanasio is a cheapskate, but this is one of those situations that is hard to square with him saying repeatedly over the last few weeks that adding salary would not be an obstacle to improving the team. Then we do this deal of Cortes and have to add a prospect to help balance out the money in the acquisition of Shelby + Montgomery? That rings a bit hollow.

Now I happen to think it entirely possible Attanasio would have ok’d a higher team salary for a big addition. But little things like this make it harder to defend him on that.

Is Quintana a top 10 prospect for the Padres?

Looking forward to seeing him being traded for another All-Star going to the Padres. 😆

I think this is also as simple as we have a bounty of depth in the middle infield. We just added Ebel; Dickinson; and Hughes to that mix. We have Made and Peña and a resurgent Eduardo Garcia. Not to mention surging Ethan Murray and an adequate fill-in vet having his most consistent season in Freddy Zamora. Quintana is a defense first guy. We already have a bounty of such depth guys in his age groups and this doesn't even get into Acosta, Rijo, Polanco, Martinez, and possibly Ereu down the line.

With how they churn them out the chances of this happening are decent lol

I don't even understand why Cortes is considered anything close to a salary dump. He seems healthy on his rehab assignment? I'm not angry about the bottom line results of the deadline, but it is baffling.

I don't love that they're giving up Jorge Quintana in the Cortes deal.

Is there a link confirming that Jorge Quintana is part of the trade?

Ok yes deal from depth that is fine and smart. But to waste an asset (albeit a low tier one) in a salary dump is where I get confused and annoyed. Especially when Nestor is not a negative value guy. Lockridge is a zero. My opinion on him is not gonna change we just acquired another Drew Avans. So what about the depth of those 4th and 5th OF types because we are swimming in them.

At the end of the day it's still whatever imo. In the 1% event Quintana actually becomes something, then yeah the process becomes a major, major problem.

From a strict on-field perspective, it allowed us to acquire Miller, a high-level reliever, for nothing. More than fine by me.

The answer may be that the Brewers front office just really, really likes Lockridge and turned down other offers for Cortes to acquire him. Not as a future All Star, but as a valuable roleplayer who can chip in a few WAR over the next few seasons a la Blake Perkins.

Note we also have to clear two 40 man roster spots for Lockridge and Miller.  Cortes and Montgomery were both on 60 day IL so that is no impact.

Means we need to expose two players on our 40 man roster.

Berroa & who else?

I am with you Joseph, but just because someone may have a lot of money, doesn't mean they should buy $5 value with a $10 bill.

Jorge Quintana should carry top-30 prospect talent in most systems, and using him to move Cortes is dumbfounding since Cortes is a MLB caliber pitcher. We should be taking on assets, not losing them, let along one who is top 50 in our system (and top 30 is many systems)

Yep, you definitely said it better than me.

When it happens, remember I said it first though

Soooo….look at it as Quintana for Shelby Miller who prob will make this look very very acceptable.

This thread reminds me of Bucks realgm on draft nights!

I truly believe the fans on Real GM myself included would draft better than the Milwaukee Bucks have the past decade.

The Brewers front office should be embarrassed for how they operated today period. Absolutely disappointing all the way around.

Sure, I mean that is the net, but still misses that this is Quintana & Cortes for Miller. Cortes is not a scrub and not done for the year, so let's not forget that he SHOULD have value. Montgomery was done for the year and we just took on his salary to get Miller.  We didn't offload Cortes in a pure salary dump since he was going to pitch in the MLB this season.  So we either should have gotten more value from Cortes, and not had to add in a prospect to move him.

Maybe there is more, and yes Quintana may not be a major prospect ever, but I think I just overvalued Cortes trade value I guess?
