I see that Nightengale is reporting that the Dbacks are motivated to move on from Marte this winter.

If you were Arnold, is this something you'd at least kick the tires on?  Looks like he's still owed $91M over the next five years.  I know there were some clubhouse issues with him this past year though, so you'd have to take that into consideration as well (although admittedly I have no idea what those issues really were?).

Not sure if this is a new report or repeating the one I posted earlier that they were ready to move on. I would be very interested in Marte assuming you don't have to overpay.

I wonder what he would cost us in terms of prospect capital?  We're talking about a guy who's 32 and still owed $90M over the next five years.  I wonder if AZ would be willing to eat some of this salary for us to increase the prospect package going back in return?

BTV has him at 60.7 which is a big number. I would highly doubt that Arizona would need to eat salary. I'm assuming any Brewers offer starts with Pena.

Yeah, if he's got that much value - then AZ probably doesn't have to kick in any salary to get a good return.  My guess is that we won't be a player in this market for Marte, but he'd certainly be a fun bat to add to the lineup.

It makes sense if Turang could play SS. I'm not sure the team would value Marte as much considering he is old.

Was intrigued when I saw this since I knew he was signed on a not ridiculous yearly amount. However, never would've guessed he's already this old so I don't think it makes sense for MKE at all.

Agreed on the age situation.  We're already paying for an aging Yeli, so I doubt Arnold and Co. would want to add another aging/expensive player into the mix as well.

Marte has been so good the last 2 years that even if he starts dropping off, he will be a very good player for a few years yet. In 2026, Turang could play some (a lot?) at SS. Marte played CF years ago and could transition to corner OF/1B in addition to some 2B. Idk how willing the brewers would be to take someone who has been called a diva, though. And, I’m sure AZ would want some real talent for him

Ok at first glance I was thinking no, but now I’m more “probably no, but it depends”

Pros: age 32-36 seasons is on the old side but not on the realllllly old side. The actual contract value isn’t bad or too high for our payroll. He’s probably our best hitter for at least the next couple of years. He’s apparently available and it’s not common for guys with this amount of “affordable” team control to be available.

Potential complications: we’d have to be comfortable moving Turang to SS for at least 2026 and possibly beyond. Then when Made is ready we’d have to be comfortable moving Marte to another position (probably corner infield or corner outfield).  I’m operating under the assumption that Made will be on the Chourio trajectory and be here at some point in 2027. Obviously we’ve all seen the rumors of Marte being a malcontent and or distraction. We’ve heard repeatedly that the Brewers have a “no ******** policy” and I think it’s unrated how important it is to bring in guys who fit the culture. I obviously have no idea what Marte is like and if he’s a good teammate, but the Brewers would have to be sure he will fit their culture before committing to the contract and trade capital it will require.

cons: this is a bit of a shift from the brewers recent approach. It potentially complicates their goal of long term success by trading away controllable players and locking in a high salary on the roster for the next 5 years.

Marte for Freddy - Who says no

Arizona. Surplus value on five years of Marte (even at $91M) is way more valuable than one year of Peralta at $8M.

If the Dbacks are serious about trading Ketel, I'd imagine they'll be looking for multiple MLB prospects and/or young players with near full complements of service time remaining.

Probably something like three of Patrick, Henderson, Pratt, Quero, or Pena.

Diamondbacks general manager Mike Hazen told MLB Network that trading Ketel Marte is unlikely to happen this offseason.

Hazen’s remarks at the annual general manager’s meetings directly contradict reporting earlier this week by USA TODAY’S Bob Nightengale that suggested the club is motivated to move Marte this offseason. The 32-year-old was an All-Star and Silver Slugger at second base this past season when he posted an .893 OPS with 28 homers in 126 games. He remains an early-round selection in all fantasy drafts heading into next season.

I believe in the industry they refer to this as "getting Nightengale'd".

Bottom line is none of you (or me) know what Mark will pay for the 2026 roster.   Marte absolutely fits if we don’t short on other areas of the organization.   We need a bat like this somewhere and him at 2nd can work.

This FO is too smart to add any $20M/year player on a long-term contract where every year is in his post-prime performance years. Not happening.

Adding a salary like that absolutely will hurt the team moving forward when they have second, third and even 4th year arby (Turang) they would want to give to their talented, prime-aged core.

The team will want to have salary room to hold select talent from our core so they aren’t forced to sell-off that talent.

Contreras-Frelick-Turang-Vaughn will get expensive over the next 2-3 seasons. Even Chourio’s salary will start to get up there. Plus we have Yelich’s salary the next 3 years.

Financial flexibility is critical to the future success of this team. They also will want to preserve flexibility for an extension or two. Lots of thought needed ahead for a small-market team with an incredible future.

We have been following this organization to know Marte isn't the type of move they would make. Another guy in his 30s with a number of years left on his contract is not part of the plans.
