Game 11: Vikings @ Packers - Sunday, Nov. 23rd @ 12:00 PM

Posted

The Packers survived the Giants.... barely.  But injuries are mounting. Jacobs remains a question mark. Wilson is a good backup and Brooks is a decent third down back, but neither are close to bringing what Jacobs can provide.  Golden is missing a lot of opportunities being banged up.  Will Reed finally return?

Our TE group is in major flux.  Musgrave can't seem to hold onto the ball or block.  Fitzpatrick is who he is...an "ok" blocker and not much else.

At least JJ McCarthy is all over the place in his throws and his OL is struggling.  Keep him scrambling and our D should have a good game against him.

"Rock, sometime, when the team is up against it, and the breaks are beating the boys, tell 'em to go out there with all they got and win just one for the Uecker. I don't know where I'll be then, Rock but I'll know about it; and I'll be happy."

How many people remember Gary Cuozzo?

As I type this, Carson Wentz has attempted 29 more passes than J.J. McCarthy for the Vikings in 2025.  As Wentz is out for the year, McCarthy will finish the season with the most pass attempts if he can survive for two more games (maybe just one more game).

McCarthy's passer rating is 61.7.  That is bad.  It's much worse than most people realize.

The last time the Vikings had a QB, who had attempted the most passes that season, with a lower passer rating than 61.7 was 1971.  That was Gary Cuozzo, who finished the season with a QB rating of 52.2 (largely due to a 44.6 completion percentage).

In 1971, there were 21 QBs that had enough attempts to qualify, and the median QB rating of those 21 players was 67.1 (Pete Liske - Philadelphia).  In 2025, Pro Football Reference has 35 QBs listed, and the median number of those 35 players is 93.5 (Jaxson Dart).

McCarthy has only started 5 games, so I would agree that it's still way too early to tell, but so far it has not been good.  McCarthy has a far, far better supporting cast than Dillon Gabriel, and Gabriel has posted an 80.8 QB rating in his first 6 starts.

McCarthy is a dud. You don't go from this bad to competent starter when you are already throwing to one of the best receivers in the league. I'll grant that their OL has been constantly hurt, but the days of QBs taking years to develop are over. He isn't going to get 3 years of mediocrity to prove he can play. And he hasn't been mediocre.

They made a mistake with Darnold and will pay for it. I don't think Darnold is terrific either, but he's competent. It would have been one thing to let Darnold walk if he were 34, but he wasn't, he was a top pick that suffered with a dysfunctional team.

Another game the Packers should dominate, particularly with this front 7 against an awful QB, but that of course it means it'll come down to a last-second FG.

They also had Daniel Jones!

They did but I will at least excuse that they never saw him play for them. They had a year of looking like a SB team under Darnold.

Side note on Jones, I definitely blanked on how long he's been in the league. I don't know why I thought this was year 3 or 4 for him.

Maybe instead of 'OldSchoolSnapper' you are starting to trend just plain 'OldSnapper'?

Going to be a game decided by how the Packers' offense handles constant blitzing.

Yeah... that's a tough scheme. I'd like to see a lot of Brooks in this game and the Packers SHOULD be able to get some chunk plays with... Golden and Watson.

Greenard is questionable for the game... but I'm sure he'll play.

Van Ginkel is a stud as well. Though I think those two really benefit by the fact that... you really can't double or chip them when they show 6-7 on the LOS.

It's going to require GREAT communication from the OL, Wilson, Jacobs stepping in and picking up a LBer.

But we're also going to get some shots. The potential for some big plays.

McCarthy might turn out to be a dud, but I think it’s worth remembering that he’s still only 22 years old, which is younger than many rookie QBs who played four, five or six years in college.

He should’ve been drafted by a team that had the luxury of letting him grow as a backup for a couple of years.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

Isn't it great that on a touchback, all you have to do is move the ball 20 yards for three points?

That’s true for teams that have FG kickers that are virtually automatic from 55 yards in.

The Packers have to go a lot further to have a 50-50 chance of getting three points

Props to their punter.  That was a perfect punt.  Wish the camera man did a better job at tracking it.

Stepping up vs the run when it matters at least.
