My son loves out there, Avondale...  He's been there about 6 months.

I’m sorry to hear that.

I picked a bad weekend to go to Spring Training. Fortunately my Saturday game got moved to a 6:10 PM start but the Friday prospect showcase game at Maryvale is still scheduled for 2 PM.

This reminded me of the Sermon on the Mount scene in "Life of Brian"

My dog stopped eating and drinking last Friday.  She has been sick for a while and is 14.5 years old, so this isn't a surprise... but it sure does suck.

More massive flooding in Milwaukee tonight

The severe weather in general this week.  We avoided the baseball sized hail that some of Dane County received, but we still had golf ball sized hail.  Fortunately, we have a metal roof, but there are a few small dents here and there, and somehow the solar panels appear undamaged.

Our neighborhood is very sloped, with our street being pitched, and all of our back yards slope downhill (we're 2 blocks from Lake Mendota on a hill).  Our neighbors on the high side of our house just moved in over the winter, and they inherited broken gutters that cause a lot of water to pour into our yard.  The previous owners somehow mitigated it, but this year water has literally cascaded down the steps we have in the back yard, and it pools under our deck.  The neighbors are aware that their gutters are broken, but didn't know the scale of runoff we were experiencing until we met with them the other day.  New gutters won't be installed overnight, so I'm hoping they can come up with a solution to stem the runoff into our yard.

What part of Dane County?  I have rental properties in DeForest.

You might want to check on those rental properties.  I saw a lot of pictures of larger hail from the east side of Madison, and lots of cars in the surface lot at the airport were properly damaged by the hail.  I know DeForest also had some gnarly winds overnight Monday night.  We're in Middleton, and there were parts of town that also had the very large hail.

Cross Plains got golf-ball-sized hail.

But at least the rain please send some of it my way. Some counties by me are starting water restrictions.

My hometown of New London has pretty much been underwater all week.  I think the last flood I can remember was in 1977.  They had built a canal attached to the Wolf to alleviate this and it has probably worked for the most part.  Shiocton's also flooded, though they always seem to flood.

I think there's some engineers on here, so maybe they can help me figure this out.

Long story short - there is a spot where the gutters aren't capturing all of the rain.  The rain is dripping off of a corner in very large drops, and of course it is hitting right above my bedroom (flat roof, slightly pitched to allow drainage).  Because the drops are large, they make a loud tapping noise that makes it hard to fall asleep.   I don't think there's anything that can be done about capturing the water, and I rent so I'm not spending a lot of money to fix it.  It doesn't rain here much, so I have to deal with it less than 20 times a year.

Is there any way to dampen the noise of the large drops hitting the roof?  I tried putting an old patio table under it so it's not hitting the roof; it's not quite as loud, but still noticeable.  If I raised one side of the patio table so that the drops are hitting at more of an angle, will that make it quieter?

What would be a cheap way of solving for this?

I like @valpocrewsader's suggestion.  But for variety, I'll go the other direction... you could try using a white noise generator in your bedroom to deaden external noises.  You can get a phone app for it to be very simple.  YouTube has lots of 24hr sleep sounds "videos".

Engineer here.  Think "ear plugs".

Thought of that.  It would likely fill with too much water, pushing some soil over the edge and making a mess on my rooftop deck.  Or the soil will run out of the bottom drainage holes with the excess water, making a mess on my rooftop deck.

Have that.  My air filter generates white noise.  Thought it would be enough, but the water drops are very large and the tapping noise is too loud.

You really do need an engineer (which I am). 😉

image.png.ea32efc77bfbe465dfe014b05fa7d467.pngUse landscape fabric to keep the soil in the pot and let the water drain through. Honestly, skipping the soil and using rocks will probably work too.  The sound hitting the rocks at the top will need to transfer through multiple interfaces (rock to rock, rock to pot, pot to roof) that will insulate the sound sufficiently.
