Jackson Chourio, Andrew Vaughn Return To Brewers' Lineup

Despite a weekend scare, Jackson Chourio is also returning to the Milwaukee Brewers' offense.

Chourio, an outfielder, and first baseman Andrew Vaughn were activated from the 10-day injured list Monday and were in the lineup for Monday's series opener against the St. Louis Cardinals. Outfielder Blake Perkins was optioned to Triple-A Nashville and outfielder Greg Jones was designated for assignment to make room on the 26-man roster. Also, right-handed starter Quinn Priester was pulled from his rehab assignment while still remaining on the 15-day IL. The return of Chourio and Vaughn, who hit in the top half of the batting order, is a much-needed boost for an offense that has been missing a spark.

Chourio was a surprising IL placement on Opening Day. He sustained a fractured left hand while playing for Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic, but the injury didn't appear to bother him as he continued to play after sitting out two games. The injury popped up during the Brewers' final exhibition games just days before Opening Day.

Chourio then fouled a ball off his left ankle Saturday during a rehab assignment game for Nashville, which put his expected return Monday in doubt. But he went through running drills and was deemed fit enough to be activated.

Vaughn joined Chourio on a rehab assignment last week as he recovered from hamate surgery in his left hand.

Perkins was returned to Nashville, where he started the season. The defensive-minded center fielder has been the odd man out with a healthy Garrett Mitchell able to patrol center field and the emergence of Brandon Lockridge. But the switch-hitting Perkins mustered a measly .109/.212/.174 slash line in 19 games.

Jones was a minor-league free-agent signing this offseason and appeared in 11 games since coming up April 14. He also struggled at the plate, going 2-for-21 (.095). If he passes through waivers, he could return to Nashville.

I was curious if Black was going to be the odd man out. I'm glad he's not. Perkins is a nice luxury to have as the fifth outfielder when the offense is clicking but that's not the case right now.

Even if both are still a little rusty, they should have no problems exceeding the production of Perkins and Jones.

I don't know, man. You're telling me they DFA'd Jones for an outfielder whose current batting average is 95 points lower?

Isn't 0/0 technically undefined?  Just seeing that fraction brings back some bad memories of calc II.

Good to see Black was retained although not a surprise. The interesting scenario is when Yelich is ready to return if all is well health-wise. Yelich & Black are pretty redundant on this roster----I'm sure they aren't thrilled about Yelich playing in the OF.

Black and Bauers are redundant.  Bauers has the edge there too

I guess it depends on if what you value more. I think Black has the edge as a pinch runner and better OF defense but Bauers has more power and 1B defense. With that Bauers is probably more important but Black has closed the gap the last week or so. I would probably just keep both until Yeli is back, Leonard is the only option in my book to swap with Black and that would cost someone a 40 man spot which isn't worth it.

With Jones gone the Brewers have an open 40 man spot plus there is no way Priester is back before his 60 days so the Brewers have availablility on the 40 man if they want to add a guy like Leonard..

My thinking is that Black & Yelich are redundant due to both primarily being locked into DH role. Bauers & Black also have redundancy, but as you said Black comes out 2nd there too, due to the glove being factored in.

Black has better OF defense?

Is there any evidence of this?  I've never heard anyone say Black was better at any defensive position than anyone else on this team.  lol

I could be wrong, but i believe that one poster on this site that posts in the minor league forum often, was complimentary of his outfield defense in the minors last season.
