By far Murphy's biggest weakness is knowing when to pull the plug.

Ashby was just horrendous tonight, when he comes in I start pacing the floor.  It is nothing but intense anxiety for me when he can't through a dang strike.

After the game I turned on the NFL Network because they had the Bears-Rams playoff game on.  Got to see Williams throw it away in OT.

It was a glorious evening.

I have no problem with opinions but there was also a fair amount of emotional whinging going on. Which do you think I was commenting on?

People saying they would rather see Patrick stay in the game, that's not a terrible take. But acting like a manager going to his closer in a save situation is the biggest mistake ever... do I really have to say that's odd?

No I get it. It’s far from an egregious move,  Plus if he’s going to be in that role primarily … a 3 run lead is the “safest” time to get him a shot again. It’s not like he put Gasser in there to try closing it out. It may not have been my first choice but no matter what happened, it was a defensible move, I grant that.

I think I’m just particularly high on Patrick as a high leverage bullpen arm.

Just noticed that Turang's HR wouldn't have been a home run in any other park other than Wrigley per baseballsavant:

The Left center baskets in Wrigley are about as much of a unicorn homer magnet as that lame left field in Houston.

The manager has to trust his closer. If he can't, he needs to find someone else for the job.  There are exceptions, for instance, when the closer has worked too much and shouldn't come in. But otherwise the man is paid to do a job. In Abner's case, he has the stuff to be an elite closer. He's not there yet, and who knows, maybe he never gets there. But he for sure doesn't get there if is sits on the bench during his stress situations. Fans often see just the game in front of them. Management usually tries to strategize for 162.

And I’m allowed to mock them for being relentless mopes, as I did.

If I had a vote, I'd vote to name the in-game thread board (back in the day) the relentless mopes board.

Which is why I don’t have a vote.

What's up with Counsell?  He has aged so much since he left Milwaukee, like he has Progeria syndrome.

Well when he left Milwaukee he was still getting carded for R rated movies.

Great post. I Haven't scoured back on this thread, which I'm sure is a good thing given a couple of the late posts I'm reading commenting about some of the earlier ones.

Bullpen usage is always going to be an easy target, which is why so many want to target it. I think there are some folks who, if they were calling the shots, would go through 7-8 different closers in a season. For the record, the only really bad decision Murphy made tonight re the pen is not reversing his decision & putting Ashby back out there once Conforto was announced. Which, of course, isn't allowed.

Patrick had two days rest coming off a 4 inning outing. Murphy probably didn’t want to use him at all today. That’s probably why Ashby had a really long leash. I’d imagine it was never on the table for Patrick to come back out for the 9th.

If they’re going to use this “piggyback” approach with certain relievers going 4 innings like Patrick and Drohan have done the last few days, people are going to have to adjust their expectations for how often they can be used.

In Patrick’s case, it was like using a starter to pitch to a batter or two in between starts on a day they might be throwing on the side anyway.  In the past starters were used like this occasionally.

I wouldn’t expect to see Drohan or Patrick today.

That's particularly true given Ashby's freakish availability rate.  That's not anywhere near normal.

I’m surprised we aren’t really discussing at all the very real possibility that the Cubs’ grounds crew manipulated the mound last night to give Miz trouble with his landing because of his height.

Not saying they did anything against the rules. Just typical Cubs’ stuff.

There seems to be some tension on the board between the “relentless mopes” and the pompous holier than thous.

I suspect that the poster who criticized Murphy for removing Ashby to have Patrick face, Conforto did not realize that Conforto was a pinch hitter who was announced only after Ashby was removed.
