With Skubal gone I think that leaves Detmers, Holmes or Gausman as possible fits for the Brewers.  There are others but I think these are the top 3 for the Brewers right now.  If it only costs Wilken and some international bonus pool money or a DSL lottery ticket for Holmes sure do that trade but I think the Mets will be looking for something more.  Detmers will probably cost the most but I think the Brewers could get him for something like Adams, Coleman Crow and a DSL lottery ticket.

Gausman is harder to gauge on if he will be available or not.  The Blue Jays are not really out of it for a final AL Wild Card spot but they aren't really in it either.  I think a similar package as what the Angels will be looking to get for Detmers will be close to what the Brewers will have to pay for him.

The trade market should pickup now that Skubal is gone.  If I could get the Reds to part with Greene I would send over Pena in the deal but the supporting pieces would be less.  The Mariners would make a good trading partner but I think they are looking for someone who could help them next year or this year so I don't think there is a fit there.  Pena for one of their starters would work the best but I'm not sure the Mariners would be interested in that.  Maybe this is where you could convince someone to take on Frelick something like Frelick, Adams and Crow for Kirby.  I'm not sure if that is too much or not enough.  I guess it depends on your valuation of Frelick and Adams and also of Kirby.

I’m interested in these players, however Detmers will be far more expensive than Gausman, Detmers has without looking it up I believe 3.5 years control left, and is top 10 in MLB in Ks and top 15 in WHIP. Gausman is a rental, is 35 years old and having a bad season by his standards. Also depends how much salary of his Toronto would eat to get more return.

It was said the Brewers already checked in on Detmers and Brewers balked at their price (My guess is it was Pena plus 2 other lower guys)

Gausman I imagine you could get away with like Josiah Ragsdale and a teenage pitcher to get him

Brewers are on Gausmans no trade list

That was more for an off season trade than anything else.  I don’t see him invoking the NTC when he will be a FA this offseason.

Okay maybe, MAYBE you'll get impact, But if/when the time comes, Contreras will likely be gone, Turang will be gone, and do we know for certain Miz will be healthy? No offense to you, but way too many people like to try to predict the future. I don't live in that world because literally anything can happen. I live in the here and now, and right now, Miz is healthy, you still have Contreras, you still have Turang, Bauers is having a career year, I mean if not now, then when? When can we be assured the time will ever be more right then now to literally "go for it"?

After putting so much resource into scouting, drafting & player development, getting impact from your farm system had better be a damn sight more than 'maybe'. Cuz like I said, if they don't they have no chance for success in today's game. Not with the financial realities that exist. That's why they go about it the way they do. A productive farm HAS to be part of the equation. Mind you, I'm not saying you hang on to everyone. That's impossible. And I'll be disappointed if nothing happens tomorrow. But being AJ Preller-type aggressive, especially for rentals, is something I don't think we'll ever see here. Nor, IMO, should we.

I think you can strike a good balance between being stupidly overaggressive like Preller and being ultra conservative like Matt Arnold. That is what I would want in my GM, anyway.

And I suspect you'll disagree with me, but I wouldn't call Arnold ultra-conservative. I would classify him that way if he had a fleet of Brinks trucks to throw at potential holes like a few other teams do. Judicious, maybe more creative than other GMs (by necessity). certainly more bottom-line conscious (again by necessity). Like I said above, I'll be disappointed if nothing happens by 5 tomorrow.  At the same time, I've always had a hard time criticizing us not trading for this or that player unless I know what the cost would've been.

While keeping a necessary eye towards the future as well as now, I think he usually does strike a pretty good balance. He leans towards the side of less risk, yes. IMO he pretty much has to. There are attractive pieces from Wilson to Nashville, a LOT of them. We'll see what happens.

Ahhh... but weren't people on this board going bonkers when Preller was "going all in?"  Ok... not all people.

I am very happy that Arnold isn't Preller.

Preller was taking marching orders from ownership at the time

Not to quibble, but Preller traded for Juan Soto, Mason Miller, Dylan Cease, Hader, Snell, Darvish, etc all with years of team control remaining.

He’s kind of the exact opposite of Arnold. He’s aggressive with his farm system to add controllable pieces to his major league roster to add significant talent. while Arnold is  confident in who they already have and conservatively will pick at the edges of his roster  for role players and depth to raise the floor.

In the event of an entire season lockout, is that year’s contract basically ripped up? it doesn’t just push forward to 2028, right?

So any player we are looking at controlled through 2027 may actually just be a rental. And knowing our tendency to trade players with a year left on their contract, Any player controlled through 2028 may not be of any multi-year use to us and their trade value if we were to try to trade them after a lock-out may be quite muddled.

Even trading for controllable talent at this point seems like a huge risk.

Yep. I was referring to the general idea of the Brewers being aggressive a la the Pads, and that aggressiveness being especially risky if it involved them acquiring rental pieces. You're right; San Diego mostly picked up contracts that still had meat on the bone.

Nobody knows for sure, it would be part of whatever agreement is reached.

Fair.  But holding on to ANY prospect not tied to a long term contract might be a huge risk.

we could end up with a scenario where the controllable years is reduced from 6 to 4-5, and 2027 counts towards that total.  So players we have 5 more years of control on might end up with only 2-3 more years of control left heading into 2028…

I see your point about the risks in trading for players with seemingly multiple years of control, but I also see the risk in hugging prospects that might be taken from us.

all the more reason to have as many players as possible extended by year end.  Really need to get Made, Mis, Harrison, Henderson, etc extended, if for no other reason than to protect our control.

How about Robbie Ray? expiring $25 mill contract, good track record. SF just doesn't need him for the rest of the year.

Jett Williams and Anderson for Ray

Extending pitchers is very high risk.  Every one of them is one tweak away from career ending surgery (just look at Priester, who knows?)  I think that is why the Brewers are more willing to extend their batters and field players.

Fair enough.  Let’s get it done with Made (at a minimum) and atleast one of Turnang and Contreras.

if we’re going to do this without a flurry of BIG trade pieces, we’re going to need to actively control multiple waves of elite prospects at the same time.  Otherwise we’ll never have enough talent simultaneously to get over the top.

your point on pitching when we’re largely healthy right now makes it even more attractive to go for it now.

if there is going to be a salary floor after this year, why not spend the money now on players we are very familiar with while prices are low, as compared to wasting money on mediocre players at high prices after the CBA is done

I agree. Made is a must and Contreras is really our only good option at catcher ( I don't believe in Quero's arm anymore). With Woodruff coming off the books we can afford this.
