I know it's mathematically possible for the Giants to make the playoffs, but because there's so many teams ahead of them (and they'll all be playing each other and somebody has to win), I'm not sure there is an actual scenario where they could.

The Dodgers only have 3 division games left against an opponent that is not the Giants. IF San Francisco won out and the Dodgers lost every game for the rest of the they’d need SD to lose all but 10 games and AZ to lose all but 11. In that scenario, Giants could win the NL West

The first Brewer to use "Your Love" as a walk-up that I can recall.

Two updates.

First, let's look at the 7 games against the Cubs and the resulting magic numbers. Each team has 18 other games, so let's see what the Cubs would need to do to win the Central if the Brewers went 9-9.

Brewers win:

  • 0: magic number is 18, Cubs would need to go 10-8 if Brewers went 9-9.
  • 1: 16, 12-6
  • 2: 14, 14-4
  • 3: (3 wins guarantees the Brewers win the tiebreaker) 11, 17-1
  • 4: 9, no scenario for Cubs if Brewers go 9-9; if Brewers go 8-10, Cubs need 18-0
  • 5: 7, Brewers need to go 6-12 and Cubs go 18-0
  • 6: 5, not worth talking about
  • 7: 3, ditto

So, really, just don't get swept. 3 or more wins puts it away pretty safely. Still need to watch the Dodgers and Braves, though,..

Second, here's an update on where the Brewers stand on their magic number vs. other teams:

  • ATL: 23
  • LAD: 22
  • PHI: 18 (currently tied with CHC for top WC)
  • SD: 13
  • AZ: 12 (Note: AZ is currently the #3 wild card with a half game lead over SD, but MKE has tiebreaker on AZ, and not on SD)
  • MIA: 9
  • STL: 7
  • PIT: 7
  • CIN: 5
  • WAS: 4
  • NYM: 1
  • SF & COL: clinched

Thanks Cubs for continuing to help our Magic Number!

Here's a young version of "The Kid" for #19

And for #18, none other than stocky 3B, Wes Helms

In the hawing household we called him Big Wes and Obermuller Lil Wes. That was a time.
