Brewers (May) vs Phillies (Wheeler): 9/22/26, 5:40pm

Posted

I’m not too upset about this one. With May, Harrison, and Gordon pitching against Zack Wheeler, this game went better than expected. I was hoping for a better performance from May and Harrison, but I was expecting a worse performance with Gordon pitching 5 innings. 4 runs against Wheeler and this bullpen (including Duran) isn’t bad. The offense looked better than they did in Baltimore.

Meanwhile, the Brewers are still on the verge of clinching a bye tonight, we didn’t give Philly much experience against our likely playoff pitchers, and I’m in the camp that really doesn’t want to face the Cubs in the NLDS (not good for my blood pressure and I do fear they have good bulletin board material with the L flag from last year).

Don't quite get why Abner was cranking it up in the 8th of rest was a priority. If he's already warm use him. Try to win the game.

Also don't buy the idea Murph was hiding guys because they may face Philly. We're 157 games in. Every potential opponent has every morsel of film and data on our pitching and vice versa.

More than a little worried about the K rate lately. This K rate would likely be an early exit.

9-15 - 8
9-16 - 12
9-17 - 9
9-18 - 12
9-19 - 11
9-20 - 14
9-22 - 15

Tim is right, why even get Uribe up at all if this was the plan?

That’s a good point. Hard to say they were punting if they were planning to use Uribe.

I agree with this. No idea why Uribe got warm at all. I guess maybe he was going to bring Uribe in if Stott reached but a run didn't score?

Well Uribe would have had to come in regardless if Gordon got out of the 8th right? Eventually you would need to use one of the top guys if it went to extras Gordon was already over 70 pitches

You wouldn't be getting Uribe warm to come in for the 9th inning during the middle of the 8th inning.

C'mon man, what Yelich did in 2019 or 2025 really doesn't matter.  He has not shown to be a player we can rely on in the here and now.  He's had a stinky, crappy, horrible season, and thinking his previous history, when he actually provided offense to this team, will suddenly rear up and make him great again is pretty crazy.

He's not THE guy anymore, not even close...

We've seen it a million times where a washed up vet suddenly finds his swing in a few crucial postseason ABs. When given the right matchup. He doesn't need to see 100 mph fastballs that he can't catch up with, but there are situations where he should be deployed.

Tbc, no questions about them getting him up during the top of the 9th once we had the tying run at the plate, but why was he up during the 8th? You are absolutely right.

Offense is in the high strikeout mode again of late……they managed to put up 4 runs somehow anyway but that’s not the recipe for success for this team………everybody had a hand in it.

I saw The Natural too.

First of all, we might see Gordon removed from the roster tomorrow, and if we do it won't necessarily have anything to do with whether or not he's on the roster in the post season. So if he is removed hopefully no one has an aneurysm over it. I just heard Dillard musing about asking too much from Gordon. I disagree with this, assuming he's pitched into the 50s-60s in pitch count many times this year which I suspect is the case. If they sent a RHH up after the 2 two-out hits, maybe then you make a change, but they weren't hitting for Stott. If not for the kick save by Bohm on the throw to 3rd you're talking about one run in 5 innings. Great performance.

The problem with Wheeler is he has the large assortment of pitches & puts them all pretty much exactly where he wants, and all from the same release point. Throw in the generous zone, and you're left guessing, which pretty much plays right into his hands. Finding a way to score three in 5.2 innings after the first seven whiffed is very Brewer-ish, and something I didn't expect after the first three innings.

Yeah they’re getting bye regardless. Keep the Phillies from seeing the Brewers top bullpen arms unless they have the lead

I think that was Murphs plan with the starting pitching as much as a mismatch as it was.  Murph knows he has his work cut out for games 3 & 4 and is trying to figure out who to use where/when.  Too bad we didn’t make a good move at the trade deadline for a starting pitcher that may have given us a legit shot at a WS.  We are back to get in the playoffs and cross you fingers

I think not pitching Misiorowski in this series has something to do with that. AFA everyone else, no.

That’s literally how the playoffs always are. You gotta make it to win and playoffs anything can happen

What's Rock doing in Philly?

He’s originally from South Jersey near Philly. So maybe he’s combining the games with a trip to visit family or friends.

Outside of Skubal there were no legitimate guys to get…….we still have a legitimate shot at the WS……but the reality is as Joey Votto said yesterday…..the playoffs are a crap shoot…….

If we were going to lose anyway, part of me wishes Gordon had just come in & given up 6 runs in two innings, so we can enjoy hearing all the fans on the north side of Chicago b**** that we're laying down for the Phillies at their expense.

Plus they have those simulators now where they can dial up a pitcher and see his stuff that way. So the additional value of 3 or 4 guys seeing a pitcher live is pretty low
