Potential Manager options for Milwaukee if Roenicke is let go

A few people have mentioned Kapler. I always thought he'd be an interesting candidate. Seemed like a really intense, organized guy - a person who'd have a plan about how to accomplish what he wanted. I don't know how that would translate into being a manager, but you never know. I'd rather the club take a chance on someone than go with a retread.

This is a little off the subject but tied in, has Attanasio spoken out since the start of the year about the team's performance? I live in Arizona, so I don't get the local Milwaukee media and I admit I may have easily missed it, but I haven't heard a peep from Attanasio since opening day. I would think that given the way the team tanked last year, and the optimism during the offseason, that an absolute bomb of a start like this would stir some response. Maybe I did indeed miss it. If he hasn't said a word then I am not sure a managerial change is anywhere in our foreseeable future, sadly.

In all seriousness though; if RR is canned at some point this year I think MA waits out the year before making a long term commitment. Of course the big elephant in the room is Melvin and I don't know that MA will do a complete 180 so quickly so soon after basically saying DM can make up the own terms of his extension.

 

Brewers will probably do something stupid like fire Stan Kyles; because the 1st year hitting coach is totally the reason that everyone sucks.

Not only do the Brewers need a new GM, but they need a new GM who has enough personality/clout etc that he can tell Mark A to stay out of personnel decisions and Mark will listen to him and behave

I agree that Melvin needs to go, but he needs to take Roenicke with him. They need a completely fresh start and don't need to be taking big pieces of the previous regime with them. That's just distracting.

 

Ok so we are on the same page. I just don't want Roenicke fired without Melvin getting the boot as well.

 

I'm not sure what Counsell has proven that would make him a successful GM. Maybe I just don't have enough information. Do we know Counsell's position on using analytics? Do we know if he has any skill evaluating talent?

MA hasn't said anything....but then again we are only 13 games into the season.......When a car you own falls off a cliff it is hard to gather your wits quick enough to call 911 while it is on the way down.......

Several of those managers are average to mediocre. Guillen? Scioscia? Brenly? Manuel? Bochy's alright, I guess, but he's pretty much gotten amazing pitching and a couple hitters who got hot to go on sick playoff runs.

 

Players win championships.

 

How do you measure managers then...not at all? You used the words average to mediocre, so you must have some measuring stick.

 

I disagree with the notion that managers have zero impact. I wouldn't say that they are one of the top reasons a team succeeds or doesn't succeed, but they are one of the ingredients. I'm a huge believer in team chemistry (sorry stat-heads. I love stats too, but I also think there are other intangibles that make the sports world go round). I takes a special mentality to be the first one to the park every day and the last one to leave for the course of 7 months or more and and then have to deal with the delicate egos of athletes that are getting paid many multiples of what you are making. If just one or two of your star players don't like you for whatever reason, you probably are going to have team chemistry problems....and I can't help but believe that that doesn't carry on to the field in some fashion. I think it's harder to break team slumps when you have that kind of atmosphere.

Heres my issue with bringing in a guy like Counsell or Yount. Right now both are pretty much loved in Milwaukee, do we want to completely burn those bridges if they were at the helm and the results were similar to what we see now? Could you imagine the PR nightmare if Yount was ran out of town because a team of his was absolutely atrocious? Bring in someone with no ties to the organization or their philosophies.

This is exactly why Yount won't be the guy. If this was a good team that just needed a steward, I could see Yount in consideration. But this is a pretty tough situation, and will take time. The club won't want to tarnish Robin's image.

 

As for Counsel, I could see him as GM, but maybe not manager. As GM, he could do the 'it's going to take time to rebuild' routine without getting too burned. The on field manager - maybe not so much.

Hear a single reference to Brauny, Ramy, Siggy, Broxy, Gomy, etc, the next words out of the mouth of Atanasio and/or the GM doing the interview should be thanks for coming in, we'll get back in touch with you at some point as a simple courtesy, but then immediately cross that guy off the list for consideration of the job.

If Roenicke is let go during the season I am sure Narron would take over the interim to finish the season. Then I would hope they would do a search for the next Manager and I hope it would be a younger Manager like some have mentioned, Gabe Kapler or someone like him would be great.

He ran the baseball program at I believe UW-Oshkosh for a few years and I think they had some success while he was there, so there's that.
