Interesting article earlier about how he's changed his repertoire, increasing his strikeout rate. Stearns and DJ seem to like curveball pitchers and how that works well together with the high fastball. Presumably they see something. A very respectable 4.14 xFIP (Brewers as a team have 4.13) would suggest that perhaps the ERA is misleading. Put him in front of a good defense and see what happens. And yeah, presumably he's here for long relief as there's no such pitcher on the roster currently; Burnes seems to be used for other purposes and they seem to want Houser and Woodruff stretched out to start.

Albers should be gone. It's not time to worry about having to eat a contract. At least Lyles can eat some innings in one sided games without having to put position piayers in a game.

He seems like a Petco only pitcher but I will give DJ the benefit of the doubt seeing what he did with the low rent brigade he has been given.

It would be a mistake to DFA Albers in my opinion. He was very good pre injury and has been a solid reliever much of his career. We only have a month to go before rosters expand and we can bury him and only use him as a mop up guy if he doesn't turn it around. Every arm is key and dropping him for nothing on august 5th would be a mistake.

 

Dl him for lyles and whoever is ready first between him and williams replaces barnes. The other one waits until rosters expand and comes up with barnes/houser/woodruff.

Lyles is a 5 pitch pitcher with a different curveball that he didn’t start throwing until last season. His curveball is pretty nasty now and he’s throwing it 7 mph faster than he did before. He also throws his fastball in the mid 90’s. He is a guy who has great stuff and might only need a little refining to be pretty dominant.

$3.5 million per Cots, with a $250,000 buyout and either $250,000 or $125,000 in incentives depending on whether he's used as a starter (15+GS) or reliever (40+ G)

Thank you, this article by the SD beat writer stated 1 mil which is obviously a big difference regarding next year.

Perhaps they are looking at him in a multi-inning relief role.

Twice in the last 3 seasons Albers started out great for one or two months, then totally collapsed from June on. In fact in 2016, he did not allow a run in April for the White Sox, but finished the year with an ERA of 6.31. He's useless as a mop up guy because even at his best, he can't go multiple innings. He'll be 36 next year. Sure he could rebound, but not sure he's worth taking up a roster spot.

Jordan Lyles has thrown 12,943 pitches that have been tracked by the PITCHf/x system between 2010 and 2018, including pitches thrown in the MLB Regular Season and Spring Training. In 2018, he has relied primarily on his Fourseam Fastball (95mph) and Curve using a Knuckle Curve grip (84mph), also mixing in a Change (87mph), Sinker (94mph) and Slider (90mph).

 

Basic description of 2018 pitches compared to other RHP:

His fourseam fastball results in somewhat more flyballs compared to other pitchers' fourseamers and has slightly above average velo. His curve is thrown extremely hard, generates a very high amount of groundballs compared to other pitchers' curves, has a sharp downward bite and has primarily 12-6 movement. His change is slightly firmer than usual, has slight armside fade and has some natural sink to it. His sinker has slightly above average velo. His slider is thrown extremely hard, is basically never swung at and missed compared to other pitchers' sliders, results in more flyballs compared to other pitchers' sliders and has less than expected depth.

I think if this was May or June I would consider DFAing him. Since we are so close to rosters expanding i would just DL him and hope he turns it around without being rushed.

 

Yeah, DL Albers until September. He can pitch an inning or two of mopup.

 

If he comes back next March/April pitching well - fine. If not DFA him then.

 

He is costing the Brewers $2.5M next year either way, and there is no way he reaches his incentives, so might as well see if he is decent next spring.

He'll get skipped sometimes with all the off days and you'll have Woodruff if needed. Davies also is possible at some point

My first guess would be Davies or Woodruff. Or, more likely, they go to a 4-man rotation and put Peralta in the pen. With all the days off in the next 6 weeks, it makes sense.
