Eulogy for 2019

For a season that started with heightened expectations and promising play; I think it’s fair to write the eulogy for the 2019 team; one that will rival 2014 in terms of disappointment.

 

The roster never gelled with hitting and pitching working at the same time. Multiple players in season long slumps and never having more than one hitter hot at a single time.

 

The facts are they’ve played great against the Pirates and have played losing baseball against everyone else. The front office sensed it, swapping of Aguilar and Dubon for a pitcher with an ERA over 6.00 and two minor league pitchers.

 

While they still have a mathematical chance at the post season. I think we can close the books on them being a serious contender for the post season at this point

aren't we way ahead of last year at this point? I'm not freaking out at all. Things we need to get:

-Gio needs to continue working his magic as rotation stabilizer

-Jeffress and Hader need to stop giving up the big hits. 11 of Hader's 26 hits allowed have left the park

-Offense needs to average 5 runs over 2 weeks

-Chacin needs to come back solid in 2 weeks

-Burnes needs to figure it out and come back strong

 

I've always said the best baseball teams win more games they should lose, than lose games they should win. Right now we're losing more that we should win. Lots of time to get it going. a 6-7 game winning streak by any team will decide this division

Definitely not. Last year on August 1 they were 63-48, (second best record in the NL), a game behind the Cubs and 3 games ahead in the wild card race. Now they are 57-53, but still just 1.5 games out of first because nobody else has taken charge.

 

They obviously are still in the thick of the playoff race, but at some point they have to stop playing .500 ball if they want to stay afloat.

I opened this thread expecting to read news like Yelich slipped on a ice cube somebody had dropped and blew out his knee.

 

Don't think there is all that much to be concerned about at this point unless something happened to Yelich. If the Brewers were in the AL, they'd be in big trouble. But they ended up in the division with the weakest top (but maybe the strongest bottom), and that should keep things wide open until the end. As frustrating as the Brewers have been, I really don't see anything out of the Cubs or Cardinals to make me believe that they are any better. Brewers could sneak into the playoffs and maybe get lucky if they get hot at the right time.

While techically true, we are 3-1 vs ARI, 5-4 vs CHI, 5-1 vs NYM, 4-3 vs PHI & 3-0 vs WAS, so we really haven't played losing baseball against everyone else.

 

Why didn't you frame it by saying we are 10 games over .500 against everyone except the Padres & Angels? That is just as much of a fact.

They're still in it because everybody sucks. But in a vacuum, this is last year's team with a terrible bullpen. If they had a lead after 5 innings the game was basically over. If they were within a couple runs after 5 they needed to get a couple and they'd probably win. This year it's 50/50 and the record is about the same.

 

The "It's baseball, anything can happen," mantra is really hard to get into with this team. It's not like they have a young Adam Wainwright and some up-and-coming but stud pitchers and if they get into a groove they can win...there is just a seriously lack of talent. If they start scoring 8 runs a game, yeah, maybe.

If you're counting on even most of those things to happen, we can officially declare this season dead then. Jeffress, Chacin, Burnes, etc. look to have nothing going on this year. Ditto with the offense. Individual stats are good for the most part, but there's no team execution just like every other Brewers team. We were great down the stretch last year because yelich seemingly hit a two run homer in the first inning of every game with cain on base. Cain shows no signs of turning things around either. Time is runnin' out

We're not out of it, certainly. Lightning needs to strike somewhere on the team for any hope of a playoff appearance. They may not have the record they did last year, but I remember a similar feeling of continued .500 complacency to now. A strength needs to emerge, you don't make the playoffs being average or worse in all facets of the game (unless you're the Cardinals)

Run differential is one estimator, but runs scored/allowed are subject to the whims of chance, also known as sequencing (or, luck). By this calculation we have four more wins than we "should" have.

 

An even more granular (some might even say precise) version of estimating wins & loses is BaseRuns, which takes the weighted run value of every single outcome that occurs & projects runs scored/allowed from there (in an attempt to eliminate the whims of chance somewhat). By this calculation we have played to our exact current record.
