Ding ding ding! Hiura's nearly 50% K rate is an enormous black hole in the lineup, and probably the main reason he's playing in Nashville right now. Yeah, Hiura has power. But he certainly isn't the guy I want up to bat in a key situation late in a game.

Everyone keeps talking about the strikeout rate and how his numbers were unsustainable but Keston deserved the chance to stay in the lineup until his actual stats started to slide. Analytics are great as a tool but the fact is Hiura was hitting despite the analytics saying he shouldn't and he deserved the chance to keep putting up good numbers.

The Brewers are desperate to find a centerfielder as well.

And who would Peralta replace on the roster?

Davis most likely. Does Brosseaue have options? Great player for Milwaukee but he only plays against lefties. If he has options I’d say his grip on the major league roster is tenuous with the deadline coming up.

Reynolds is 27, has an .848 career OPS, plays centerfield and is under team control through 2025.

He’s Christian Yelich circa 2017.  I’d give the Pirates all 3 without thinking much about it (not to mention acquiring Reynolds would effectively block Garret Mitchell, and Frelick until 2026 anyways).

I wouldn't give all three, but I'd give:

Their choice of Frelick/Mitchell
Wiemer (his last month and a half have been brutal... there's a chance they might be selling high here)
Their choice two of Hedbert Perez/Eduardo Garcia/Joe Gray/Carlos Rodriguez (OF)

Keston had been doing a bit better before his demotion, but certainly wasn't setting the world on fire. And considering what he's done since 2020, he really didn't "deserve" much of anything.

Since June 1 Hiura 14/58 ( .241) with 3 HRs and 4 RBIs.  He walked 7 times and struckout 32 times (47% rate). I don't see how those numbers "deserve" anything.

In the last seven games that he played - 6 starts and 25 plate appearances - he had a 1.194 OPS.

Very small sample, but if that's not "setting the world on fire" over seven games then I don't know what is.

Despite what the sabremetricians say; OPS isn't everything. The Yankees are probably going to DFA Joey Gallo in large part because of his 38% strike out rate.

They signed him when he had a 34.6% k-rate in 2021. Pretty sure it has more to do with his 83 wRC+ in 2022 compared to his wRC+ of 123 in 2021

They traded for Gallo, and he has hit 25 homeruns in 138 with New York but that's all he's done. Homer and strike out. I know the sabermetrics will hop up and down and argue strike outs are irrelevant, but the reality is there isn't a team in the league who carries a player that strikes out at a 40% clip.

Hiura has struck out in 43% of his at bats, Patrick Wisdom leads the NL in Ks and he has "only" struck out 33% of the time. Eugenio Saurez leads the AL in Ks and has "only" struck out 32% of the time.

What are the Brewers to do, play a player who strikes out at an unacceptable rate, because in a small sample against exclsuively right-handed pitching he has popped an inordinate amount of homers?

Keston hasn't earned it but Severino has. That is really quite the situation.

Keston was atrocious in 2020 and 2021, and despite better numbers this year, is still striking out at an astronomical rate. Simple as that.

Mariners just traded for Luis Castillo.

Noelvi Marte (18th overall prospect), Edwin Arroyo (93rd (probably higher, similar prospect to Chourio)), Levi Stoudt (Mariners #5), Andrew Moore (unranked reliever, 58 ks in 32 innings).

That's a great haul for a year and a half even if Castillo is a borderline top 15 starter who can have some control issues.

If I were the Red Sox I would sell and sell hard. Two of the three AL Wild Cards are locks (Tampa and Toronto). Only the last spot is up for grabs and teams like Seattle, Cleveland, and the White Sox have an easier path to get there. It's not fun to be in the AL East when even Baltimore is a playoff contender now.

We made the blockbuster with the Red Sox with almonte

K rate is so yesterday. Everybody needs to get hip with the wRC+.

And Hiura hit an oppo 3run go ahead bomb tonight in Nashville.

Maybe Tampa would like C Pedro Severino to give them a boost during the stretch run, given Mejia being injured at the moment and knowing they’ve got Bethancourt anyway for expanded September rosters plus playoffs. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2022/07/rays-looking-for-catching-help.html

In addition to the Rays (0.1 WAR), HOU (-0.7 WAR), STL (-0.6 WAR), CLE (0.0 WAR) and NYM (0.2 WAR) have all gotten bottom of the barrel catcher production.

Hopefully Stearns & company can leverage their C depth (2.6 WAR, 7th) and deal Severino to one of those teams for at least some regular season reinforcements.

Can prolly cross STL off the list & Contreras to NYM just seems so obvious, but putting him into that HOU lineup would be pretty scary too.

CLE (-0.8 WAR) and NYM (-0.2 WAR) also have gotten negative production out of DH, so maybe a package of Hiura/Severino could be appealing? Mets will probably pull JDM or Bell though.

Yeah, the Astros make sense as a Severino landing spot if they believe Jason Castro will be out a while but ultimately return for the playoffs. https://www.houstonchronicle.com/texas-sports-nation/astros/article/Houston-Astros-Jason-Castro-knee-injury-status-17323871.php

Shipping off Severino is long past due, imo.

That, and acquiring another reliever. I can't believe the brewers have done neither.

I’m not sure if we’ll acquire a hitter but one thing I know for sure is Stearns will acquire at least one reliever. He does every deadline. Let’s just hope it works out better than it did last year with Norris and Curtiss!

Regarding relievers, they have Peralta, Houser, Cousins, and Topa coming back soon which will push the Strzylecki's/Gott's/Gustave's/Suter's off of the roster or push them into mop-up duty, so I can understand not picking up a reliever.

Keston didn't suddenly start hitting well, they just finally starting playing him versus RHP. He's always been good, just misused.

I really don't get this boards sudden obsession with increasing the teams groundouts.
