Reynolds has several years of control remaining

Don't know why I didn't know that. But that means that we can part with more to get him if he's here for 3 more years. Wave Chourio in front of the Pirates and see if they bite.

For two rentals and a reliever who wasn't good before last season?

Reynolds is in his prime and has 3 years of club control remaining. Bednar was stellar last year as well, and he's not FA eligible until 2027. This trade would require the Crew to give up an absolute haul.

It doesn't appear Kansas City will trade Greinke, unless he asks to be dealt to a contender:

Not too surprising given Greinke’s personality.

When he started out the year getting shelled, I checked BRef & saw he was at exactly 69.0 career WAR.

Half expected him to retire then saying he thought it was a nice time to do so.

We aren't trading for Juan Soto.

Just figured I'd get out ahead of it.

If Stearns has one foot out the door as I believe he does why wouldn't he go all in and trade Chourio and 4 or 5 other top prospects for Soto when it won't be his mess to clean up.

Because that is pure lunacy.

This team can’t afford one guy who will destroy the payroll and any future top prospects it will cost  and it will set the franchise back years. PS I do believe David is out the door

Doubtful, yes but with Boras Corp, and turning down nearly a half a billion dollars,  it’s pretty obvious Soto is going to elect free agency in two years.

Thus, it’s really no different than trading for Bryan Reynolds: would require premium talent going back to Washington and lots of teams will be interested

I'm not sure I'd want a guy that turned down 440 million. Something wrong with your head if you're turning down that money.

He’s betting on himself and also wants to win. I don’t think he has any interest in being a part of the Nats rebuild any longer.

Does this mean if don’t trade the farm for Soto that Stearns doesn’t have one foot out the door?

1) Because he wouldn't have the other job yet, and

B) His future employer would see how he sabotaged the organization and pull the offer

The Yankees are probably the favorites for Soto.  They have the prospects to get it done and with Judge probably leaving for the Mets or Red Sox it would make sense for the Yankees to trade for Soto.  Probably makes more sense to do this in the off season.

Beyond the Yankees I am not sure there is a team out there that could get close to or even attempt to get close to what the Nationals would be asking for.

Don’t kid yourself, a guy who turns down nearly half a billion dollars doesn’t care an iota about winning. Do you think he’d take 375 million to play with the Yankees or Dodgers?

Soto’s agent, Boras, knows what he’s got: a top 5 MLB player who will hit free agency at 25. AAV is only going to go up. Soto and Boras would be suckers to cap his future earnings now without selling himself to the highest bidder.

As long as the yankees think their prospects are all future hall of famers they will probably never make the necessary offer to land a guy like Soto.

He’s all but assured to test free agency in 2 years, which really handicaps what the Nationals are going to get and puts every contending team in play, because there’s no long term payroll commitment.

They are not selling at the deadline, unless they go into a tailspin in the next two weeks and fall below .500 or something along those lines. Besides a three game series against the Red Sox, who are not exactly lighting the world on fire themselves, the schedule sets up very favorably coming out of the break.

If he doesn't get hurt and produces 900 ops or better the next 2 seasons, yeah he might overall get more than that. With that said, he's one foul ball off the kneecap from potentially costing himself and his family hundreds of millions of dollars now. While I can understand comparatively to other contracts this is a bit team friendly, for $440 million I just can't understand not smiling, taking the money, and grinding out your contract for $440 million. The Nationals will certainly be good again, their ownership is actually pretty good about spending to try and compete. And lets say he manages to get $480 million over the same time span, It'll be his great great grandkids that spend that last $40 million unless he colossally screws up in life.
