Soto to St. Louis is my guess, so start dreaming up those Big Boy Pants posts now.

Goldy and Arenado on the current squad, guys like Holliday and Rolen before that, Cards have somewhat of a history of landing these kind of guys.

I was thinking that as well but does St Louis have the prospects to get it done. Last thing we need is Soto in St Louis.

Interesting, cause I think this has Yankees or Dodgers written all over it. Yankees as a replacement for Gallo (and potentially Judge) and Dodgers with their substandard (for them) left field production.

The Cards have had three or four guys this year who have gotten their first taste of the majors, and all have done well. I think the Nats start with a couple of those guys if they talk Soto w/StL. You would also think they would want a minor league arm (or two) that has potential, something StL might not be comfy dealing at this time. It smells like NY or LA to me too.

I think Volpe/Peraza, Dominguez and a couple of lower level players is probably close to what it would take.  That would be the equivalent of Chourio, Wiemer plus the lower level prospects.

And then the announcement shortly thereafter of the half a billion + extension.

As long as the yankees think their prospects are all future hall of famers they will probably never make the necessary offer to land a guy like Soto.

I've always had the feeling that the Yankees try to make everyone else think their prospects are all future HoFers.  Then they wait for someone stupid enough to believe that too, and include some of their more mediocre ones in trades for quality players...  ?

"Don't force him to choose between Chris Smalling and Phil Jones. It's like asking someone to choose between which STD to contract!"

The difference being, Goldschmidt, Holliday and Rolen signed extensions after being acquired by St. Louis, Arenado came to St. Louis already under a big long-term contract.

If Soto already turned down 14yr/440 million dollars from Washington, it's a safe bet he doesn't sign an extension no matter who he plays for which makes him different than the others mentioned.

Also, St. Louis doesn't really have a history of trading away their best minor league talent, which is why they are able to have 2 of the Top 20 highest paid players on their roster while their overall payroll remains middle of the pack amongst the 30 teams and be competitive.

Assuming we trade guys like Hader, Woodruff and Burnes for a haul sometime in the future, I’d be inclined to go all in this year and trade anybody not named Chourio. Might as well go big since we only have those core guys for a couple more years and we’ll replenish the system with those trades.

Would love to see the Brewers call and ask about Twins 1B/DH Miguel Sano. With his struggles and Arraez at first and the Twins having to rotate AB’s at DH with Buxton now, I think it wouldn’t be the worst flyer and he should be able to get cheap.

Despite his struggles this year, Sano still has a career OPS of .809 and a career OPS+ of 117. He would be able to play first against lefties and DH. He probably would also benefit playing at American Family Field.

The problem with Sano is that while he SHOULD be very good against lefties, he's not. He doesn't have significant platoon splits which makes for a pretty bad platoon partner.

Here are some ideas of dealing catcher(s) depth for another spot of need.

Pedro Severino and a lower level prospect for Will Benson (Guardians AAA CF)(.264/.423/.928 16 HR, 16 SB)

Benson isn't a big time prospect anymore but would be a interesting platoon with Taylor, maybe some Jason Heyward upside.

We get Ian Happ from the Cubs the Cubs for Mario Feliciano and a lower level prospect.

The Cubs are going to need a catcher after trading Contreas in the near future, Feliciano would be about the right value

We get David Peterson from the Mets for Omar Narvaez.

Mets will get Degrom back and Peterson would be a great return for rental.

Severino to Twins for Jake Cave

I still like Cave as a cheapo platoon option with Taylor in Center for the rest of the year.

Any interest in Bellinger from the Dodgers? He’s a need of a change of scenery kind of guy and is languishing at the bottom of their order. What about Hiura for Bellinger? Saves Dodgers money and gives Brewers a CF. Maybe a 3-way deal where prospects and Hiura go to Royals, Benintendi to Dodgers and Bellinger to Brewers.

(Not trying to be but I’m a big change of scenery guy this year to try and improve Brewers and Hiura is candidate 1A for that)

they can trade Severino for a bucket of balls, as far as I'm concerned.
And Benson and Cave won't help (Benson could next year, but he's not a true CF).
Happ would help. I'm kind of fond of Feliciano though.

I don't see the Brewers dealing Severino.  The guy they are looking to move is Narvaez who is a FA after this season.  Brewers would have to give up more than Narvaez to get Peterson.  Trevor Williams is more realistic.

Soto was likely grinning from ear-to-ear when he heard 440 million dollars, and then Scott Boras declined the offer.

The only way Soto signs a long-term deal prior to free agency is if he changes representation.

I don’t think the Brewers would be looking to add the  kind of payroll necessary to get a player like Bellinger ($17 million). Moreover, I don’t think the Dodgers would have any interest in Hiura. They’re set at 2nd, LF and DH.

I think Happ would be an imperfect and therefore interesting fit. They don’t need yet another LF, but they could use a switch hitter and he could be a fun offense-first utility player. If they let Huira play 1B and 2B then Happ can, when he isn’t at OF or DH.  He’s gotten his K% under control too

it would take more than just Feliciano and a low-level prospect to get him, though, since he’s under team control for next year too.

If change of scenery is what would work , how about Yelich for Bellinger !

According to Bob Nightengale here are the teams in on Soto so far:

I am sticking with the Yankees they have the prospects to get it done.  The only thing that could hold it up is if the Nationals insist on including Patrick Corbin in a deal.  I think the Yankees would want the Nationals to take Hicks and Gallo back if they are bringing on Corbin.

I think the Dodgers wouldn't really care and would take on Corbin if it meant getting Soto and the same with the Giants and Mets.  I am not sure the Padres or Cardinals would be willing to take on Corbin maybe the Cardinals as they need pitching though Corbin wouldn't be much of an upgrade over what they have now.

brewers not mentioned i guess in the soto  as a possible trade partner?

Not surprising. Only the big market teams ever get mentioned in these types of trades for superstars. It’s more exciting that way from a media standpoint.

I see zero chance Stearns would take on Bellinger and his $17M contract unless Yelich was part of the deal. Bellinger would add over $7M to the payroll this year alone and he's in arby. It wouldn't make any sense to add that kind of money for such an anemic bat.
