Lower payroll, more prospects now in org… so what will the Brewers do tomorrow?

Posted

The Brewers moved maybe $4m-ish of payroll off the books with the Hader trade. They acquired two pretty good prospects, one in the OF where they already have some intriguing guys in the minors. Some of the names are now off the board.

So what are your predictions on what happens tomorrow before 5pm?

First, I suspect Stearns feels he has shored up the bullpen with Lamet. Maybe he pursues another middling arm but nothing splashy.

I can’t see the front office passing on acquiring a big(ish) bat… but which one? That I have no idea.

I think today tells (IMO) us simply that they’re going for rentals and will refocus in the offseason.  They want to build the farm and still go for it this year.  If they were all in for next year, they would have kept hader.  I was hoping for a splash in devers, but realize they’ll likely go for JD Martinez and/ or Josh Bell as previously discussed.  they shouldn’t cost a top ten prospect (now that the top ten is better).  I could see another good rental bullpen arm added as well.

I don't think Counsell can look the guys in the eyes tomorrow evening unless the team believes they got better at the deadline. I don't think the Hader trade made them better. For this reason, I believe SOMETHING will happen. I also think that acquiring a CFer that could end up blocking the Brewers 4 best prospects for 6 seasons says something else is in the works.

I'm on the record saying I don't really like Bell as an upgrade. I think Stearns will get somebody with additional years of control and pay with the prospect capital he now has at his disposal. Soto may be the target (Peralta+Chourio would be pretty enticing). But I think it will be Reynolds (something like Ruiz or Frelick+Kelly or Gasser).

I also think there is a chance that Stearns will sell off Severino and Narvaez and go get Sean Murphy.

The Mets have balked at the prospect of giving up a top 10 prospect for Bell.  The Orioles had to settle for the Astros 12 ranked prospect and an unranked prospect from the Rays who will also have TJ surgery this year in the Mancini trade.  That is a rather light trade for Mancini.

I think the Nationals if they want to get something for Bell are looking at a similar type of trade.  I am not sure if it is the Mets or the Brewers who will give that up but the Red Sox are also looking at the same return for Martinez.  I think the Mets go with Martinez over Bell which then leaves the Jays and Brewers vying for Bell.  I think the Jays may prefer Cruz over Bell as he will cost even less than Bell.

I think Narvaez stays with the Brewers.  I don't think the offers that the Brewers received were all that good if they were he would be gone but there is still time left for a trade to occur.  I believe the Brewers add another bat like Bell or Martinez or maybe Gallo.  With the acquisition today I think Gallo is less likely to happen.

I don't see the Brewers trading for another reliever I think they got who they wanted already.  I think Hiura will also be traded either in a package for Bell or sent to the Rays, Mets or Blue Jays.

I don't think Lamet is a guy you can count on. Unless Topa or Cousins come back and are solid (or you move Houser back to the pen), they need one more guy who can slot somewhere in the 6th or 7th innings in close games.

I like all of this, except I think Narvaez could still be dealt, possibly to someone who is willing to part with a prospect piece that would then be used as part of a deal for Bell (or whatever bat they may be targeting).

Would love it if we could pull Sean Murphy from Oakland. 3rd in both catcher WAR & framing runs since 2020, career 110 wRC+. Would shore up catcher for the next three years.

The addition of Ruiz gives us 4 AAA outfielders who have decent trade value.. I imagine the willingness to trade any or all of Frelick, Wiemer, and Mitchell all just went up with Ruiz in the fold (or Ruiz!).

I feel like I've championed for Whit Merrifield for about 4 years now at every deadline. I still think he makes some sense here.

Any chance we could pry Kelenic away from Seattle for a reasonable cost and let him come home and reset?

The Royals waited too long to get rid of Merrifield, he adds nothing to this Brewers team.

Would expect another RP, not real confident of Lamet coming back from his injury from last season. Would be surprised if a minor league OF isn't traded. Still hope for Bell or Drury.

Hiura for Kelenic?

Assuming we got dramatically better at the MLB level by trading from our prospect OF depth, I’d sign off.  Not sure the Mariners do, but crazier things have happened.

I am predicting Gallo will be a Brewer tomorrow and he will platoon with Taylor. I think people will be surprised at how much we need to give up to get him.

I also expect either Wong or Narvaez to be traded. Other than that I bet there will not be any major trades.

On another note, I assume because we have three catchers that Stearns will go out and get another one for the lulz.

Can't see promoting the entire AA outfield and then adding another outfielder today unless something is going to give.  If they intend on Ruiz playing second, I suppose that adds Turang to the mix of possible trade candidates.

I don't think Narvaez goes.  Can't see relying on Caratini and postseason ineligible/barely plays Severino.  Pretty much means Feliciano, Jackson (who hasn't even been playing at AAA), or Reetz would need to come up within a few weeks to be ready for a playoff role.  Nevertheless, this ridiculous carrying three catchers thing needs to be resolved.

I expect a bat, and wouldn't be surprised to see a bullpen arm.  Even if you were pessimistic on Hader, today's move made the bullpen worse.  I only ask for no "make a trade for the sake of making a trade" moves, like Norris last year and Schoop in 2018.

Nothing. After last year I don't see the Brewers going for it...ever.

The Brewers have won the 6th most games in MLB since 2018, with a number of key contributors during that timeframe being acquired via trade - Yelich, Adames, Omar, Manny, Moose, Urias, Shaw, Caratini, Rowdy, Peralta, Lauer, Lyles, Pomeranz.

Pretty good for a team not going for it.

I think it is important to look at our 40 man roster when loom at tomorrow. We have 43 players on the 40 man, 4 on 60 day dl dont count so 39. However Peralta, Cousins, and maybe Topa and/or Samchez would mean some guys would need to be let go. We do have Alexander, Kelley, Barker,  Strzlecki, and Alex Jackson who really wouldn't be much lost if needed. As well as Topa, Pablo Reyes, or Mark Mathias who don't have much value.

Basically I think we will definitely trade a couple guys off the 40 man roster for a bat.

Posted

Also we have 28 guys who would be likely on the 26 man when Peterson, Peralta, Houser, Cousins come of the DL. However that might be ok if Peterson and Houser come back in Setember and rosters expnad.

I’d be surprised if they didn’t get a bat, likely someone who can play 1B/DH. Josh Bell, Drury, Christian Walker, CJ Cron, or Garrett Cooper,
