Brewers acquire Trevor Rosenthal

Can anyone remember a deadline deal made by Stearns that was a needle mover?

I don't have a memory for these sorts of things, but there are plenty of "needle movers" to be made at all different points in the year. He acquired Adames and Tellez well before the deadline last season and I'd say they moved the needle.

Stearns has been one of the best GMs in the league from day one. I don't particularly care what day on the calendar he does business.

my hunch is they were in on Bell and the Padres decided to go for broke

Yeah, I kinda thought we might go for Bell.

If we had signed him, we'd have saved a top 20 prospect. Are those inconsequential?

Stearns is embarrassing himself.

Stearns is embarrassing himself because he couldn’t force Rosenthal to sign with the Brewers as a free agent?

Sure, but you know what does get things over the finish line?? Making a team an offer they can't refuse.

Mark Attanasio shared with reporters today that after the lockout, the Brewers had "three big names we were hoping for, and we got one in Andrew McCutchen." Regarding some payroll clarity recently w/ player agreements, he said, "We always leave room to do things at midseason."

Not necessarily.  He said "leave room to do things at midseason".  Doesn't mean they will spend a ton of money or do anything more than a group lunch at ChuckECheeses (that's a thing).

Ok. Moose was ok after the trade, better the next year in my opinion. He was a bigger name who helped. Pomeranz was a bit of a reclamation project who was a failed starter, Lyles was great for the crew but hasn’t been consistent since. He was a lightning in a bottle guy.

Watching this team try to hit lefties is painful. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out they need guys who can hit lefties.

I think you're thinking of 2006.

I mixed them. Braves collapsed allowing the Cardinals to make the playoffs in 2011. Braves went 9-18 in September (were 80-55 going into the month) while the Cardinals went 18-8 after coming into the month with a 72-64 record.

The trade deadline is always kind of a mixed bag if you’re a Brewers fan,  The only time we’re in a blockbuster is when we’re sellers.  When we buy, we buy many tiers below the headliners.

But I get a kick out of this:  it is the only time we really get a glimpse into what the people who are in he best position to know anything really think about prospects.  As a fan, and thus someone who otherwise has to rely on the amateur’s rankings, this is the fun part.

If you keep expecting that all the prospects will stay and/or we’ll be in on big name acquisitions, you’re just going to be disappointed.  Stearns doesn’t play that way, at least not at the deadline.

Good post, but it still doesn't justify this particular trade IMO. As always when something leaves a bad taste in my mouth, I hope I'm wrong.

Force? Did he make the same offer? If Rosenthal doesn't want to be here as bad as you describe, should we really be trading for him?

Or just saying no. Again, it may work out. The one positive in this is they dealt from a position of strength in the system.

Was this Stern's plan?

"Rock, sometime, when the team is up against it, and the breaks are beating the boys, tell 'em to go out there with all they got and win just one for the Uecker. I don't know where I'll be then, Rock but I'll know about it; and I'll be happy."

Where did I describe Rosenthal not wanting to be here?

Was just thinking that while walking the dog, which is when I do my best thinking. There's a good chance they were knocked off-balance a little when Bell was included in the Soto deal.

Because of course...we hear every year how they are in on something that "doesn't get across the finish line". To me, that's on Stearns. Make SURE it gets across the finish line then.

Of course it is.  Stearns definitely should have MADE the other GMs do the deals.

You have a strange vendetta against the best GM this team has ever had.

Stearns is good because of the understanding of pitching he brought to the organization.

The trades and free agent signings have not been spectacular by any means.

Teams that win in the post season are consistently the teams that win at the deadline.

Another very underwhelming move by Stearns.  Instead of the bat that CC needs, DS gets a reclamation project who hasn't pitched in two years. While the other contenders in the National League get better, Stearns has the Brewers (depending on how Rogers and Lamet perform) about even or getting worse.  Maybe Ruiz can salvage what so far, has been a highly disappointing time.

You literally said "force". So either the offer wasn't as good, or he didn't want to come to Milwaukee. I'm guessing we didn't make as good of offer. Now we have up a top 20 prospect to acquire his 10 innings.

Oh I don't know, maybe the Brewers not finding hitting at the price they wanted to spend is the reason Stearns acquired a bunch of pitchers. If we can't score more runs it stands to reason they'd do whatever they could to help prevent runs from scoring.

Get a bunch of new pitchers, throw them at the wall and see what sticks.

Last year when they traded Reese Olson for Daniel Norris I didn’t love it, but I could squint and make some sense of it. This one is probably the most confounding deadline deal I can remember of the Stearns era, but I’m curious to find out what they’re thinking here.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

"10 innings" of a great reliever in the postseason is far more valuable than a low-level prospect. The prospect obsession on here is crazy.
