Hopefully that means Keston is getting traded otherwise a team that pinches pennies just lit 2 mil on fire which I can't believe.

If he gets claimed, they only lit 1.5 million on fire, which is like 1.3% of their OD payroll. Even penny pinchers have to roll the dice sometimes.

If he doesn't get claimed, he goes down to AAA maybe figures something out and is of some use later in the year. Or maybe he is never a useful MLB player again, in which case we'll always have 2019.

Possible, but injuries or performance could dictate differently, if Wiemer comes out and tears it up the Brewers will have a hard time justifying sending him down. Likewise if there were injuries to any other outfielders before TT came back

If Wiemer plays so well you can't send him down that's a good thing. Also the Brewers still sent down Hiura when he played so well they couldn't send him down. As a mid 80 win projected team marginal wins are more important to them than almost any other team. Building a little hype and excitement also doesn't mean nothing. It's possible to be passive to a fault. The less aggressive move isn't always the "smart" move.

Except if he plays that well you will really want that age 31 year under team control but now you've given that away. It seems unlikely all 3 of Mitchell, Wiemer, and Frelick make the OD roster. The Brewers can earn an extra draft pick with Frelick, they can't with Wiemer. This really seems like a no brainer.

As for the competitiveness, even if Wiemer is a 5 win player this year(highly unlikely), two weeks likely wouldn't make a noticeable impact(1 win at the absolute most). The potential of 1 extra win is not nearly enough for me to throw away a year of his prime

Add the WAR of the player filling in too.

BA in RF and Brosseau at 3B looks good now.

Wouldn't a rookie on a 5WAR pace be in the running for RoY? Wiemer would get a full seasons service if 1 or 2.

Sure, but that's not really my point. My point was the two weeks is unlikely to make a substantial impact in the standings, if he plays well enough to win ROY after that that's great but we shouldn't just willingly give up a year of his prime for 2 weeks now

Wiemer's not eligible for draft pick compensations so it doesn't even matter. Only Frelick (and Chourio) are....

I never wanted Naquin on this team but figured he would make it. Excited about the possibility of s couple of young guys in the outfield.

They agreed to terms with Hiura on January 13th.  They didn't sign Voit until February 21st, Brian Anderson on January 17th.  If the Brewers don't sign either of those guys, does Hiura make the team?

Right. It shouldn't be expected he's a 5WAR player as a Rookie. We must remember the role of extensions in Wiemer's case as he wasn't a 1st rd pick.  Did he sign for 1mil? Below?  In terms of his willingness to secure himself contractually, he'd likely be the first to of this group of 4. He is the higher risk guy up and down of the 4. Cashing in a 5WAR rookie year would be a good idea for him on a discount.

Then there is idea he is a bit swing and miss. It's 20days straight? Down in the minors when optioned?  Rewinds the clock to the 2 weeks. Strong potential when Taylor comes back from injury. Though my feelings on TT is to be gone and let the trio play.

And that's fine, call Wiemer up 2 weeks into the season once he can't gather enough service time to gain a full year. Trading a year of prime Wiemer for 2 weeks now is extremely short sighted

So then there is no way barring a season injury that he qualifies next season. He will be a 2nd year player. Stupid rules hurting the Brewers once again. You know lists will favor East and West teams.

So as expected Naquin is confirmed to not make the roster. Hiura was one of the questionmarks, but with no signs of the swing-and-miss issues improving this spring it's no surprise either, and make the picture a bit clearer. To me the only question on the position player side right now is whether Voit makes it, or if it'll be one Frelick/Wiemer in that spot., I'll lean towards the latter, but it's quite open still. So my final version:

C: Caratini, Contreras

INF: Tellez (1B), Urias (2B/3B), Adames (SS), Turang (2B/SS/(CF)), Brosseau (3B/1B)

OF: Yelich (LF/DH), Winker (DH/LF), Mitchell (CF)

IF/OF: Anderson (3B/RF/(1B)), Miller (1B/2B/CF)

+ one of Voit (1B/DH), Frelick (OF), Wiemer (OF), I'd give them like a 40%/30%/30% likelyhood respectively.

Toro/Perkins are on the 40-man too but seem highly unlikely to me IMO.

SP: Burnes, Woodruff, Peralta, Lauer, Miley

RP: Williams, Bush, Strzeslecki, Milner, Houser, Wilson, Varland, Guerra.

Payamps instead of Guerra/Varland is the only real other possibility I see. And I think they go with the greater upside of those two; Payamps has been a solid reliever for a few years now, but the upside seems limited and there will be similar relievers on waivers or available in cash or non-prospect trades.

And I'd just add the usual caveat that the OD roster isn't always very meaningful in and of itself, it's just a brief snapshot. Whatever the OD roster ends up being, it'll most likely just stay that way for a matter of days, or a couple weeks at most. Injuries will take care of that.

I think the Wiemer discussion really is a non-issue. If he makes the OD roster and needs to be sent down for two weeks later in the season to preserve a year of control, I find it highly unlikely there's any scenario that prevents the FO from doing so. Right now, it seems to make most sense to do it when Taylor comes back, but it's a loong season, I'm sure there will be ample opportunity to do so later if he's mashing or there are injuries, etc.

But even in those two cases 1.) as others have noted, replacing a hot rookie for 2 weeks with another capable player isn't likely to cost many, if any, wins, and 2.) we have many, many other options to fill in for injuries for a couple weeks (possibly Anderson, Winker, and Miller on the big league roster already, plus Frelick, Perkins, possibly Naquin still, even Turang, and a whole host of other minor league guys, including even Chourio at some point, that could have a cup of coffee until Wiemer can come back up).

If Houser has to go on the IL that might have just saved either Payamps or Varland

Or Tyson Miller grabs the last spot, while Payamps is still DFA’d. Still hope Houser is okay though.

Sounds like there is still a chance Voit ends up on the ML roster

I hope we keep Voit

I hope even more we don’t keep Hiura

We do have adequate coverage for backup IB (Brosseau & Miller) & DH - but I like Voit’s bat & veteran presence

Groin tightness for Houser. Doesn’t sound like a good pattern of events. Shoot!

I’m concerned about Houser

I’m hoping he has a big year for the Crew
