I am assuming this means either Winker will be DFA'd after he returns from the IL or Tellez is going to take longer to return.

Smooth (...even if it's not that Carlos Santana)

Sadly, even average production from 1b/dh would be an upgrade for this team.

I would say it means Tellez is going to be your new DH whenever he does return. Not good for Winker. Not good for Hiura.

It's fine. Santana has been roughly league average this year which is better than what we've gotten out of 1b

Aaaaahhhh!!! What a smart pickup!! Santana was the unsung hero during the Mariners playoff run last season -- both because of his leadership and his clutch hitting. Love it.

I don't necessarily mind the price of a lower level prospect, though they are the hardest to judge value on. I hope Carlos continues to be at least respectable.

Wow cannot believe Santana is 37 now. Time flies. Should have probably just took a flier on him in the offseason, but oh well have to trust our self scouting. We usually don't trade teenagers unless there is an apparent flaw

In this case, there isn't a flaw. He'a very young. He's talented. He definitely flashed when healthy this year in the ACL. BUT, the Brewers have an embarrassment of riches in the low levels in the middle infield. This is a smart use of talent filling a clear need.

Pirates taking a flyer on a lottery ticket. Brewers get immediate help, from a surplus position.

Sounds like the prerequisites for an in-division trade.

We needed a bat, and this is about the lowest price it was going to take to get immediate help.

Nothing to get too crazy about, but I was worried we'd actually not address 1B/DH at all. So I like it! 👍

Veteran. Switch hitter. 99 wRC+ vs. RHP, 100 wRC+ vs. LHP. 158 wRC+ since the All-Star Break. Projected for a 95-103 wRC+ the rest of the season. And he's a legit 1B!

Should certainly help stabilize/improve on the 78 wRC+ we've gotten at 1B this year (81 vs. RHP, 54 vs. LHP) and 55 wRC+ we've gotten at DH this year (66 vs. RHP, 17 vs. LHP).

Since June 1, the Brewers have gotten a league low 27 wRC+ from the 1B position. Carlos Santana is an immediate upgrade in every way shape and form. He also plays great defense.

This is a lotto ticket of course there is talent. They probably see something in his profile though which makes it easier to give him up. They are not giving up a young promising player because they have too much talent in the lower levels that would be absolutely idiotic lol. Especially for a 37 year old rental. This FO is one of the smartest in the game.

I don't know why there needs to be so much read into this. You give something to get something. It's quite simple. In its ideal form both teams benefit. Of course the Brewers brass are some of the smartest in the game.

Anywho...

Brewers improve 1B defense and offense in one move. Not bad at all. Severino might turn into something, but that would be so far down the road that it just doesn't matter. Hope Santana can get hot for a couple of months here and give us a nice middle of the order bat.

But the presence of Bitonti, Pratt, and Adamczewski makes dealing Severino an easy pill to swallow.
