NL Wild Card Game 2 - Diamondbacks (Gallen) vs Brewers (Peralta): 10/4/23, 6:08pm

Peralta has one postseason start in his career, 4 scoreless innings in 2021.

While Gallen has nice stats, he has given up 4+ runs in over a third of his 2023 starts. That includes four times in his last seven outings. This will be his first postseason appearance of his career.

Good Peralta wins this game, bad Peralta walks a ton and may still win the game, but have 100 pitches after four innings. All depends on if he gives up a home run ball, and if men are on base for it

That being said I somehow have markedly more confidence in him than I did in Burnes yesterday

If I was a betting man, I would say there is a pretty strong chance, in most scenarios tonight, he won't pitch more than 4 innings regardless of how he does.

I've been thinking a lot about the next 2-3 years of Brewers baseball. I'll save most of those thoughts until after the season officially ends, but the upshot is twofold: 1) I'm optimistic and 2) Freddy is going to be the anchor of this staff through his age 30 season in 2026. We all remember Mother's Day. Today would be a good time for a postseason version of that (maybe with only 9 or 10 Ks and 3-5 extra outs).

One of these days, someone's going to lose Game 1 and go on to win the WC series. Why not us?

I would normally agree, but we emptied the bullpen entirely yesterday. The only guys we didn't really use are Rea and Miley, and those guys are probably going to piggyback to a degree a potential game 3. The only guy I don't think is available tonight based on usage is Williams, but anybody that pitched yesterday and also pitches today probably won't be available for game 3.

Hopefully Peralta makes the decision easy and is at 60 pitches through 4 with 7 strikeouts and 1-2 baserunners total.

I think Megill is also available

I haven't started drinking yet today but I promise if I see Winker as the DH today because he has a hit off of Gallen in his career... it won't take me long to find the bottom of this Jack bottle.

Well, the reality is, a trainwreck tomorrow is better than sitting at home tomorrow. No reason most of these guys can't pitch three days in a row if we need them to. Devin William after 31 yesterday is probably a no-go, yeah. Then Burnes can choose to be an ace for 7 innings on Saturday or get lit up for 7 innings. The NLDS gets an off-day after Game 1 so most of the guys can rest Friday through Sunday. Wilson/Milner didn't throw more than 6 pitches, Uribe/Peguero didn't throw more than 15 pitches.

It wouldn't be pretty, but that is what we get for emptying the pen to lose Game 1. If you empty the pen again today, you are definitely getting the Miley/Rea show for 6 at the bare minimum tomorrow (if we somehow win today).

The best thing I can say going into tonight, is the Brewers should feel their backs against the wall. Normally, after yesterday, I would think the Brewers should try to work counts. I think we need to be aggressive early in the count today. Gallen throws a lot of very hittable first pitch fastballs, generally middle away. We have a few guys with a lot of power to the opposite field. That's what I'm hoping to see.

Right before my alarm went off this morning, I was dreaming that the Brewers signed CC Sabathia for Game 2. In dreamland, my mouth was agape and my eyes were wide like in a YouTube thumbnail.

Agreed. It'll be interesting based on the game decision. I think the bullpen being gassed may factor in a bit, but he's also not going to let Peralta work out of 2 base runner jams in the 5th if he's over 80 pitches. There's also something to be said about having Miley or Rea pitch today if Peralta can't go deep. At least that way a potential tomorrow you have Williams and hopefully a few guys that didn't pitch at all. Peralta for 5, Rea for 2-3. Then tomorrow Miley for 3-5 and Wilson for 2. I know those are probably optimistic innings numbers in the postseason, again lets just hope we get filthy Peralta and he gives us 6 squeaky clean innings.

Peralta did not pitch against the Dbacks this year or last year. In 2021 he did so twice and racked up 13.1 innings allowing 2 hits, 7 BB, 1 run, 19 ks...and got the win both times. One of those matchups in 2021 was against Zac Gallen.

Current diamondbacks that have seen Freddy are a combined 2 for 21(22, but I'm removing a Zac Gallen AB) with 3 BB and 6 K...with Ketel Marte having the best stats of 1 for 2 with a double and BB.

Isn't AZ's bullpen gassed too? They pitched a lot too yesterday, more than us.

Get to Gallun early and get that count up. I'm feeling good about tonight let's wipe the slate clean and start over.

I think Gallen realizes this, and he's going to be thinking to get ahead early and be efficient with his pitches. I think we might get a lot of very hittable fastballs early in counts, and should be looking to hit them into Lake Michigan.

One year ago today the Brewers beat Zac Gallen at AmFam Field, let's make it an annual tradition.

I was going to say, "how in the world is that even possible?" but then I remembered - lockout. 🙂

Guessing we’ll see Winker removed from the playoff roster due to injury and replaced by Mitchell.

Crazy that Winker wasn't pulled up last week to actually see MLB pitching and get some at bats in.

And all the talk about rested bullpen... whatever.   Most of the Brewers can go three days in a row, if needed.   They have had a picture perfect last week or so.  Some need to throw a ball 20-30 times tonight.

It's all hands on deck. Everybody is available!

I am predicting bad Peralta shows up today and gives up 4 runs in the first and then 3 more in the third before getting removed and the series is over.

Brewers score 5 runs but lose 12-5.
