Well that was unexpected.

Just another reminder that rivalries pretty much only matter to fans.

That wasn't always the case but its definitely true for Counsell who doesn't care about his Wisconsin roots to do this to his hometown fans.

I think he forced his way out of Milwaukee the moment that news came out that CC was going to take the highest offer but would give the Brewers a chance to match. Why would the Brewers even entertain a match under that scenario? They'd offer something they felt was fair and let him choose.

The Brewers were never going to get in a bidding war, especially for a manager.

Once CC decided he wanted to manage in 2024, I was quite confident that he would be back in Milwaukee because of his desire to be close to family. I don't think the Mets were ever a serious possibility. When the offer came to stay close to home and make bank, I can see why he took it.

Trade Burnes somewhere likely to throw the money at him now or you know where he's going in 2024.

Burnes is going to the highest bidder but I want him traded regardless.

Within a couple years Matt Arnold will quit on Attanasio too.

I don't blame Arnold or MA here. That's ridiculous money for a manager.

it's the price of a decent reliever

This absolutely a concern with how cheap this owner is.

If Matt Arnold does his job well enough that he is offered top of industry compensation from an organization with larger revenue streams, then the next couple years are looking pretty bright for Brewers baseball.

I absolutely think this is a big f u to Attanasio. I think Counsell wanted to get away from Mr cheapo and going to the cubs is just a big screw you to the fans and especially this owner.

I guess we'll see how much the Mets/Hous pay their guys.   But IDK this seems like a weird move to me.  Sure its the highest but have to think we had at least 5/30 on the table. But here is near untouchable job security.  Cubs aren't really ready to win anything so good chance he's axed in a few years. But now going to our rival he kinda burned his bridge here.

To me I'd have just taken the job security and being able to have an all time legacy here as best manager they've had for his hometown team or bounced for Houston to take your swing at the titles.  Or even Mets with their money is more of a HR swing and doesn't have the stabbing your hometown in the back aspect to it.  Weird move other than still being close to home.

End of the day we decided to not pay a guy a record salary in times managers are worth less and less due to how the game is played statistically. We also opted to not give him a salary nearly double that of a guy who just won like his 4th World Series.

Saying Attanasio is cheap for not giving out the biggest managerial salary in history to someone as managerial salaries crater to all-time lows makes absolutely zero logical sense. Offering him the top salary in baseball was shocking as-is.

I realize that, but the market for managers isn't comparable. That's completely resetting the market. Is CC really worth that in the grand scheme of things? No, because I don't think he's that much better than the average manager. Even the Mets and Cohen seemingly weren't willing to go there.

We don't know what the Mets offered. We know the Brewers offered a ton of money. Question is how much more was Cubs offer.

What's even more hilarious about this whole thing, is that for a supposed "player's manager" apparently CC's players don't know him that well. Woody and Burnes were both talking about how much he loves and cares about Milwaukee and his legacy here.

We will see if this resets the market like Counsell wants. Something tells me this is an outlier and quickly will fade into the sunset as salaries continue to be low. If they want to reset the market Bochy needs to immediately pack his stuff and refuse to come back to the ballpark until he gets a massive contract himself. If Counsell flops or turns out to not look very special, he is just going to confirm managers aren't worth much money.

I have a hard time calling Mark cheap for offering Craig to be the highest paid manager in MLB. I'd have wanted him to match as well but I don't think Mark is being cheap. Counsell is now under contract for more than double any other manager in MLB
