End of the day we decided to not pay a guy a record salary in times managers are worth less and less due to how the game is played statistically. We also opted to not give him a salary nearly double that of a guy who just won like his 4th World Series.

Saying Attanasio is cheap for not giving out the biggest managerial salary in history to someone as managerial salaries crater to all-time lows makes absolutely zero logical sense. Offering him the top salary in baseball was shocking as-is.

I think Attanasio is cheap and that shows in our payroll and its probably a big reason why Counsell was so willing to leave us for our biggest rival.

Considering the record contract he just signed, and the fact that he is replacing a well-liked manager in David Ross (who didn't really do anything to deserve getting fired) expectations are going to be crazy high for Counsell in Chicago.

When the notification popped up on my phone I actually became nauseous.  But I’m Illinois raised, so was born in the Cubs hate, was molded by it.  This can’t touch me for long.

What I am interested in is where the heck they go from here for a manager?  This could be an interesting test case in just how instrumental Craig has been to organizational success.

But that is all academic.  The story is this rivalry now…

Chicago delenda est.

I realize that, but the market for managers isn't comparable. That's completely resetting the market. Is CC really worth that in the grand scheme of things? No, because I don't think he's that much better than the average manager. Even the Mets and Cohen seemingly weren't willing to go there.

If we hire another Roenicke or Macha we will regret not paying the extra money for a proven good to excellent manager who is also a hometown guy.

CC cared more about trying to reset managers salaries then staying with his hometown team even though they offered to make him the highest paid manager.

I don’t think this will reset anything but he’s a union guy…….so,I’m sure he believes it.

This reminds me again what I already knew……nobody cares about the team as much as the fans…..the players don’t…..the owners don’t……and the managers don’t……not even if they have the history that Counsell had with the Brewers and this city.

I have a hard time calling Mark cheap for offering Craig to be the highest paid manager in MLB. I'd have wanted him to match as well but I don't think Mark is being cheap. Counsell is now under contract for more than double any other manager in MLB

Just look at our payroll and you will see an ownership group that can't compete at a high level. This is just one more example.

Macha was a wet fart, but Roenicke managed the team to the NLCS in his first season.

Who cares that CC was a hometown guy if he clearly didn't want to be here?

Imagine being Ross right now hearing you're their guy then a couple weeks later finding out you're actually not

This is the biggest heel turn I've ever experienced.

Anyone playing devil's advocate for Counsell needs to stay away for a few days. Use your brain and realize how obviously a betrayal this is.

I think it's funny because I'm sure managers are happy that their pay could/will increase but also I feel like the managers are a brotherhood/fraternity as well and Counsell going behind Ross's back to steal his job is something I'm sure will rub a ton of them the wrong way. Total snake behavior from Counsell. He might just be one of the least popular managers in the MLB because of this but he got his money so I'm sure he doesn't care.

I would wear Cubs attire every day and wrap my car with their logo if they paid me that much more. Is what it is at some point. Someday Counsell may regret ruining his legacy all for money (unless he wins a World Series somewhere). Probably not, but maybe.

I agree with you.  The Attanasio apologist will be in full force with damage control.

I see a payroll that consistently ranks around 20th versus a market size of 30th.

I see a team that has won the 7th most games in MLB since 2008 and the 6th most since 2018.

They've been competing at a high level for 15 years despite the payroll constraints imposed on them by MLB's draconian financial system.

I don't think Counsell really wanted to come back.  The move with Jesse Winker is the proof in the pudding.

Yea with our likely step back coming next year he thought this was the time to move on.  I don't blame him at all for wanting to leave right now and trying something new.    Just don't get leaving to go to a same or worse position than he would be in here in terms of winning.     Houston/Mets, makes sense.    But I guess if 5-6 mil spread over 5 years is that big of a deal to him when he's already rich, so be it.    Keep in mind he'd save money here in taxes to make up some of it, and if took Houston would've saved more too.

And had they given Counsell a record contract you and all the other payroll complainers probably wouldn't have even logged in to comment. Pretty much only coming out when the news fits your agenda.

Not gonna be a Mark A apologist on this one. I really wish he would have ponied up. This sucks.

That said, the Brewers' "cheap ass" owner DID, by all accounts, offer to make Craig Counsell (who has never taken a team to the World Series or won the Manager of the Year Award) the highest paid manager in MLB. Not standing up for Mark A ... just stating facts.

It will be kind of funny when he wins manager of the year.
