Of that list Espada maybe would be my top, however I think he has a good shot at the Astros job. My money is on Murphy, maybe you have Rickie or Erikson be the bench coach and groom him for the manager job in a couple years.

Obviously with no knowledge I think it will be Erikson, Murphy or McKinven. I think the most likely will be Erikson or McKinven wiht Murphy as the bench coach unless he goes south of the border as well. If this was a true managerial search he would let the assistants look while the coaching search occurred.

I can't imagine a scenario where Murphy stays and isn't the manager. It sure seemed like he was really close with Counsell. You ever see the camera pan to the dugout when a big moment was coming (potential pitching change)? Counsell was always holding hands with Murphy basically trying to decide. I have never seen a manager lean on his bench coach as much as Counsell. If Murphy gets the managerial job, sure, he would stay. If not, why wouldn't he go be with Counsell and ride his coattails until a team gives him a managerial spot? Why sit under someone else that could be a total dunce and make him look bad in the process? Not to mention, when the guy above you leaves and you aren't promoted, it is an obvious sign you are never going to be the guy...aka Leonard with Wisconsin. Guys don't typically stay in those situations.

The Astros are trying to keep bench coach Joe Espada from interviewing with the Brewers for their managerial opening until they decide on who will replace Dusty Baker.

Espada is a candidate for both jobs. The oddity here is that, as The Athletic’s Chandler Rome reports, Espada’s contract with the Astros expired on Oct. 31, allowing him to do whatever he’d like. Yet GM Dana Brown still said Tuesday that the Brewers were being denied permission to interview in Milwaukee.

The big advantage in hiring Espada is that he would have the complete lowdown on all the cutting edge cheating methods employed by MLB teams.  I suspect they have become much more sophisticated than the old "bang on a garbage can" technique.  Who knows, maybe he could actually get Yelich to start hitting the ball in the air again.

With zero ability to choose their own staff, it probably rules out anyone externally. That Pat Murphy is keeping his options open reminds me a bit of Dave Stewart who immediately quit on the Brewers once his pal Davey Lopes was fired.

I think a more charitable read would simply be that he'd love to be the manager, but if not, he'll go be Counsell's bench coach in Chicago, which couldn't make more sense. Not quitting on the team at all. He's not under contract and wants to decide between those 2 options.

It also allows whoever the manager is to select their own bench coach if it's not Murphy. I'm not surprised that they'd retain hitting and pitching coaches just to maintain continuity. They can always fire them later if it's not working.

Why should this team want any continuity with anyone that has anything to do with this offense.

Really? I live in Houston and that narrative is so stupid.

Is David Ross not an option? Like forget the rivalry part of it and the irony...he seems like a good manager, no?

He’s absolutely terrible,

Hogg reporting Murphy really is a serious candidate and the idea would be to pair him with a young bench coach and have Murphy groom that bench coach to be his successor

I’m not saying it won’t happen but the part about pairing him with a “ young bench coach” to groom for succession appears to be speculation by Hogg.

I dont think I would have any problem with his.

Would love to see Murphy as manager and Matt Erickson promoted to be bench coach.

First of all, if Murphy is the choice, I hope they go with a young bench coach to groom to take over in 2-3 years. CV just got promoted in the FO. I would be happy with Erickson. CV is a blank slate, not unlike Counsell, there is no intel on if he would be good or not (not necessarily a bad thing).

Best option imo, and wouldnt risk major turnover in the next year

So yeah, maybe Rickie Weeks, McKniven, or one of those special assistants to the GM (which I think was Counsell’s position before manager).

I wouldn’t say it rules out anybody externally but it has to rule out those with managerial experience (Kapler, Mattingly).

I could see a rookie manager being okay with most of the staff already picked considering they’d be able to pick their bench coach.

Murphy was brought in specifically by Counsell because they're BFF's. I can't see the Brewers seriously consider him for manager. I'm actually surprised he hasn't been named the Cubs bench coach yet.

Manager >> Bench Coach
