DeBerry pitched for Cowlitz in the West Coast Summer League last summer

Quote

Friday against the defending WCL champion Corvallis Knights, Cowlitz’s DeBerry delivered one of the WCL’s most masterful pitching performances in recent years, twirling a complete-game shutout while allowing only two hits and no walks. In four outings this summer, DeBerry is 2-0 with a 1.89 ERA for the Black Bears. This spring as a junior he appeared in 20 games with a 3-1 record for Dallas Baptist.

Reading through the scouting reports for undrafted players remaining on the FanGraphs board Sinnard and Eagen both sounded like Brewers kind of picks to me.

Some of the guys that seem interesting to me for day 2

Daniel Eagen - Presbyterian

Khadim Diaw - LMU

Nick Brink - Portland

Luke Sinnard - Indiana

Apparently they were interesting to Minnesota, Atlanta, and Arizona too.

Haha. just saw three of the four went off the board shortly after the Brewers pick.

Looks like Brink is still out there, though with the pace these picks are coming in at now he might be gone by the time I hit Submit Reply.

Lots and lots of college picks

Wasn't the HS pool supposed to be pretty shallow this year?

"Rock, sometime, when the team is up against it, and the breaks are beating the boys, tell 'em to go out there with all they got and win just one for the Uecker. I don't know where I'll be then, Rock but I'll know about it; and I'll be happy."

Looks like Dinges is on the younger side for a college draftee, doesn't turn 21 until September.

Hit 323/415/583 at FSU with 38 BB / 37 K this past year.

I think what this pick states is the Crew are going to let him try the backstop again given he has experience there. He has some amount of pop. So, they are projecting - imagine that!? Will be interesting to see what kind of skill he actually possesses as a backstop. He has played corner OF. Best position may actually be 1B but announcing him as a C certainly states that they will give him a chance there.

So, we still haven't made that Cooper Pratt type pick here, to use up some of that $$ we supposedly saved in the earlier rounds yet.  Let's hope its coming in the next couple of picks.  Not sure if there's still a Pratt type HS profile on the board though remaining?  Can we throw some bags of money at William Schmidt and convince him to forgo his commitment to LSU?

It might not be until day three that they spend whatever they have saved; it's a delicate dance because they don't want to risk losing the slot money if someone won't sign. Last year a lot of their extra money went to day three picks, who don't bring that risk.

Well, technically, I believe he actually withdrew his name from the draft?

Some interesting HS names that still remain on the board:

William Schmidt (apparently told teams he's going to LSU)

Dax Whitney - big time helium pitcher out of Idaho

Garrett Shull - OF out of Oklahoma

Carson Wiggins - P out of Oklahoma

Sawyer Farr - SS out of Texas

Noah Franco - OF out of Florida

Tegan Kuhns - P out of Pennsylvania

Mason Russell  P out of Arizona

Duncan Marsten - P out of California

Jackson Barberi - P out of Georgia

All of the above guys were Top 100 draft guys by MLB Pipeline.  Wonder if we've got our sights on over-slot deals with any of them with an upcoming pick here?  We certainly should still have the money to do so, right?

Again the draft is such a crapshoot. A very good draft will net 3-4 regular MLBers, and a great one 3-6 with a All Star type in there. And usually teams don't have that in multiple years in a row. Most of these guys will not pan out, but the hope there is something there that the development team can bring out.

I don't know that anyone was excited about Craig Yoho this time last year (well very few people were).

The 11-20 round selections will be interesting, to see if the potential savings net a 3rd -6th round value there.

What I see in this draft is we drafted about 4 2nd round players - and I will assume they will draft a 4th-5th round value today with a JuCo pitcher and a couple of top 10 round talents on day 3 and hopefully sign a couple of them. Then let the development process begin.

So, is that really a thing?  You can officially withdraw your name?  So, if a team were to offer him some crazy over-slot deal - he couldn't even take it if he changed his mind at the last minute and decided to go pro?

Debarry seems like a Woodward style pick, guy our FO loved and can save $ on.

Disgusting is an interesting bat, I see the upside drafting as a catcher. If by next year he doesn't look the part the bat should be good enough for a corner OF or maybe 1B.

Be patient on the upside picks, Pratt was a 6th rounder. We can always take a couple Letson/Adamcewski/Johnson/Robinson types tomorrow. I predict Juco in the 5th and best HS bat in the 6th maybe even 6th and 7th.

I can not answer this definitively. Perhaps they can? LOL. I should have said "Technically, I can't speak with any authority on this but ..."😅

DeBerry fits their mold pretty well except he already seems to know how to properly play off his stuff & command all pitches. Figure they think they can add more strength to wiry frame & bring up the stuff a notch. Dude can spin it like crazy.

Yup.

Bishop Letson (11th round) $482,600
Bjorn Johnson (12th round) $420,500
Hayden Robinson (14th round) $347,500
Josh Adamczewski (15th round) $252,500
Justin Chambers (20th round) $547,500

Letson has a 3.02 ERA / 4.48 FIP in Carolina, Robinson had a 2.41 ERA / 3.14 FIP in the ACL before injury, Adamczewski has a 145 wRC+ in the ACL, Chambers was traded for Bryan Hudson.

Pretty good hit rate so far in the early going.
