Will Sammon and Katie Woo of The Athletic reported in a recent piece that Willy Adames has stated he's willing to take less money to stay a Milwaukee Brewer.

Let that sink in for a moment. Take a deep breath.

While it's quite rare for a player to come out and say this publicly, Adames isn't your run-of-the-mill player. While his sentiment is surely true - he wants to stay a Brewer - he's still going to be want to be paid. The full quote:ย

Quote

Iโ€™m willing to stay here for less money, letโ€™s say, but I just want to be fair for what I deserve in my career and whatever Iโ€™ve done

MLB Trade Rumors projects Adames to receive six years, $160 million in free agency this winter so even accepting less money means a deal for 5+ seasons and well into nine figures. With the Brewers' television situation in flux, it's uncertain whether the team has much (if any) money to spend in free agency and it has been rumored they could be more active in the trade market than free agency.

Either way, it's nice to feel loved. No matter where Adames lands, we all wish him the best.*

Same, I don't think I'd want to go past 4 years.ย  ย The only compromise type thing I can think of would be something shorter like that but he has an opt out after like year 2 so he could try to trick someone else into giving him a 5-6 year deal at age 32.ย  ย  So like rather than get an extra 2 years locked in now, he'd have the chance to get 4 more down the lineย

I'm rooting for Willy to get the big payday he's earned. I'm also rooting for the Brewers not to offer anything more than 4 years and Willy, if he's being advised correctly, should be looking for more years.ย

The Doug Melvin special!!!! 5-years $100mm!!!!

That is basically the discount the Brewers would need to get. ย Probably something where Adames could opt out after year 2 with a buyout of $10mm or something like that.

The Athletic also has a quote from league insiders that he wants to stay at SS but will play a different position if there is a strong offer from a team that is in a winning situation.ย

I think winning means more to Adames than anything else.ย  Obviously he will still want to get paid but if it was the Angels vs the Brewers I think he takes the Brewers offer even if it is less.ย

The amount the brewers would be willing to pay him vs the Giants or Dodgers would be measured in the 10s of millions so him saying that sounds nice but itโ€™s not realistic.

Not that Iโ€™d be excited to pay him well into his 30s. Iโ€™m resigned to the fact that he will be gone. I just have higher expectations than improbably should for how the Brewers will replace himย

If he played 3B it would be more enticing. ย But he doesnโ€™t. ย Lots of SS in the brewers system. ย So it just doesnโ€™t make sense.

So the Brewers would need to offer 7 years $159.99M to keep him?

No one knows what the Twins are doing, especially the Twins.

Hopefully it's good for (website) business at the very least!!

Nah, ownership has tanked fan morale, no one cares about the Twins right now. It's a bummer the way they were sailing throughout 2023 and then the Pohlads just knee-capped the momentum. Really stupid business decision, honestly.

Nice of Willy to act like what he says is true, but we all know he ain't staying.

Good luck Willy!

Adames rejects QO as expected. If he signs somewhere for more than 50MM total (a lock), brewers get a pick at the end of the 1st round as a revenue sharing team.ย

anyone really expects him to Return to MILW?

nope, pick coming back to Milwaukee. Brewers will make an offer to say that they did like they did with Prince and CC, but it wont be competitive.ย
