Color me surprised

I didn’t know the D’backs were in play for Burnes

Now they get to lose to the Dodgers with a bigger payroll - but I admire their spunk

The NL West is loaded

Think of what the Brewers could do if they had an additional $35 million a  year in their player budget.

If we had $35 million in additional payroll, would we want to give it to Corbin Burnes in his thirties?

Interesting that Burnes only got six years when he’s been healthier than Fried, who got an eight year deal.

Obviously a higher AAV for Corbin, but I thought Boras would hold out for at least 7/250 after Max got 8/218.

Is Burnes due for an arm/shoulder injury in the next few years? I certainly don’t wish that upon him but he has had many high intensity innings.

The only real concerning element of his performance has been a steadily declining K-rate…

K% since 2021
35.6 > 30.5 > 25.5 > 23.1

K%+ since 2021
153 > 135 > 115 > 102

His batting average allowed also spiked from .198 with the Brewers defense from 2021-23 up to .225 in his lone Orioles season.

Cutter velocity dipped a little in 2023, but rebounded last year.

Checking the movement profile on his cutter it looks like he did “tighten it up” some last year with a VertDrop of 17.5 (was between 18.6 to 19.2 the previous three years) and a HorBreak of 2.4 after being between 3.1 and 4.4 the previous three seasons.

Looks like there is an opt out after '26?

State tax in Arizona is a flat 2.5% regardless of income. State tax in California for top earners is north of 12% if the Giants were truly the other contender here.

I guess Burnes also lives in Scottsdale? Those few things would def be enough to swing the decision..

I thought he would go for more. That looks to be about $35 million a year. Think of what the Brewers could do if they had an additional $35 million a  year in their player budget.

But, but, I’ve been told repeatedly that spending doesn’t = winning! Which is why so many teams in the bottom half of payroll spending keep winning World Series titles!!

Yes!

But as we know ... the Big Leagues are the Rig Leagues!

Much has been made of Devin Williams and Josh Hader faltering in the playoffs, but Burnes in 2023 should be right up there with them.

I wanted to believe the same thing but just saw Burnes has a 2.84 ERA in 19 postseason innings for Milwaukee.

Plus, eight innings of 1 ER for Baltimore.

Assuming any of Baltimore, NY, or Boston is the AL East team referenced here ... the contract he got with AZ is better annually once state taxes are considered. (I know guys get taxed in each state they play in, but for simplicity sake..)

Add in the opt out after '26 where he can possibly get a bump if he pitches well AND this being home ... this actually seems like a no brainer to go to AZ.

Happy for Corbin. He got his bag, deservedly so. Also happy he went to the D-backs. I like them.

I’m happy for him too but I’m not a Burnes fan

IMO - he pouted as a Brewer & I always preferred Woody to Burnes personality wise

And … I only like the Brewers 😏

I thought Burnes generally pitched his heart out in Milwaukee. He received a rude awakening during arbitration. I’m sure we all would be unnerved if our bosses made arguments about how undeserving we are of a specific salary increase.
