I think Luis Castillo is about as close as you can get for a comp. Pretty good match in terms of value/control

Yeah that does seem pretty close. I think Noelvi Marte was a top 50 prospect, Arroyo was borderline top 100, Stout was a borderline top 10 organizational guy, there was a throw in 4th prospect that I don't believe was much. Probably close to Burned when you boil it down.

That's the guy that I keep seeing in Freddy, as well.

Here is a fully hypothetical question, would you trade Yelich for Adames back? Let's say straight up just for the sake of arguing. Adames has been hitting a bit better after a really bad start but his defensive has been statistically as bad as it was last year. Yelich has 3 years left after this year Adamas has 6. I don't think I would do that deal, on one hand Adames is younger, plays a position of need, and I think would gain a bunch of value with a position switch to 3B (Chapman in SF) at this point. However I really wouldn't want to add those 3 years on especially with the the quality of young guys a few years away.

What about a trade with the A's, the have Soderstrom, Rooker, and Kurtz who are all DH/1B types but forcing one to play the OF. They also have Colby Thomas (whom I really like) and Denzel Clarke in AAA and Henry Bolte (also love) in AA. They have plenty of pitching needs I don't think we could lure any of the mlb guys from them but Thomas, Clarke, or Bolte would be really solid adds to our system or big league club.

I don't really know what type of package would be ideal but if the A's stay in contention. They could be a sneaky place to send Peralta if it comes down to that. If not they could use some IF help.

Boeve and Civale for Henry Bolte would be a nice add for me, made make it Boeve, Perkins, and CarRod for Thomas. Possibly try and get Logan Davidson at 27 year 3B tearing it up in AAA (pretty sure there AAA is an extreme hitters park) as a throw in just to throw darts at 3B.

Soderstrom and Rooker are probably off the table.  Rooker just signed an extension this offseason and Soderstrom is one of their top young players.  Maybe you could do Peralta and a prospect like Pratt/Made for Soderstrom.  I am not even sure that would get the A’s to bite on that trade.  You will have to overpay and overpay by a lot to get Soderstrom.

I was thinking more like one of the prospects, specifically Colby Thomas since he is a power hitting OF. I was thinking along lines of that they have Soderstrom, Bleday, and Butler in the OF with 3 really good OF prospects that maybe we could turn some pitching into a power bat. Maybe move an OF like Perkins or Mitchell for a left side infielder in a different move.

INF Buddy Kennedy of Lehigh Valley is on a tear at the moment, probably has an opt out and I don’t think the Phillies have an MLB spot for him - 13-game hitting streak, 3-game homer streak.

Could he be our 3rd baseman?

Make that 4 straight games with a homer.

No, that I don't think it is even close.  Yelich has been surprisingly bad this year, but was an All-Star just last year.  Even in his worst year as a Brewer, he was just above average hitter (101 OPS+).  We may be grossly overpaying Yeli, but he still provides positive offensive contribution.  And I'll take that for 3 years.

Willy has been very up-and-down with his bat and we all saw the defensive regression start... I'm not sure he would be our starting SS if he was with the Brewers.  I didn't want to see Adames leave, but I also didn't want him on a long term contract either. I just don't see that contract ending well.

Maybe he comes back as a coach....

I really do think we need to go get someone like this, an older guy performing well in AAA who at least tells the fans and clubhouse that we are trying to fix 3B or SS. I don't mind overpaying with a reliever on the 40 man Jay, Alexander, Rob Z, even Peguero for the right bat. I like Otto Kemp as an option on that same team as a little bit more upside player.

Meanwhile, 31 year old David Bote sits at home "retired".  Not that it means anything, but Bote was Dodgers spring MVP.  You have to wonder if the Brewers have made any contact with Bote to lure him back after he refused a AAA assignment by the Dodgers.

I mean that with his defense slipping, it would've made more sense to have him at 3B and Ortiz/Turang at SS.

It's early but didn't realize what a good year Luis Urias was having for the Athletics thus far. Only a 12% strikeout rate. Playing mostly 2B but could slot right back in at 3B. Free agent after the year so should be available.

And he fulfills the height requirement the Brewers seem to have for a lot of their players.

Why would the A's give him up? And at what cost?

I was thinking that Ramon Urias would be a better target with the O's now 17 below .500 and Westburg and Mayo as younger 3B. I would be fine with Luis as well I think Elvis Peguero would be a nice piece to send to Oakland, it is an overpay this early in the year and probably doesn't hurt us long term. For Ramon maybe Peguero and then like a decent non top 30 prospect maybe like Kuehner/Cornielle or like KC Hunt if a little bit better ranked prospect was needed.

Here are some other ideas that I haven't heard mentioned for 3B or SS.

1) Isiah Kiner-Falefa   He is about as consistent as it comes and could do a good job at SS or 3B. He would definitely add stability. Hitting .282/336/683 he isn't going to bring any power but we just need a consistent player. He makes 7.5 this year so the Pirates will trade him and he won't cost a ton.

2)Yoan Moncada   .229/.349/835 is a lot more power and upside than IKF, however I just feel it in my bones that if we trade for him he will get hurt like the week we acquire him. Another expiring deal that won't cost much.

3) Jose Tena    Brady House is pretty close to taking over 3B, and the Nats have Garcia and Abrams at 2B/SS. Tena is probably a good utility guy for them but could be a interesting trade option. He is only 24 and controllable through 2030 so the price would be a decent amount more than IKF or Moncada.

4)Ke'Bryan Hayes   This would be a gamblers move, he is owed 7 or 8 million a year through 2029 (2030 team option). The glove is still great and he is only 28, however the bat has been weak the past year and a half. He did put up a 4.5 WAR year in 22 and 3.9 in 23. My guess is that the Pirates would trade him if someone wanted to take that contract, however the risk of paying a potentially spent player for 4 years after this is huge. On the flip side possibly a change of scenery and new organization ignites the bat back to average or better and there could be huge value in getting a player with 4 WAR potential on a 4 year 7-8 per year deal. Would a Ashby for Hayes and a decent prospect (like top 10 Pirates org) sound like an intriguing proposition.

Within the next week I expect a trade coming with Woody and Quintana coming back. Tyler Alexander would be the obvious first candidate, he is good enough for someone to want him but not really get anything valuable back. With Hall and Ashby back Alexander and Rob Z are the easy 2 to get rid of as 4th and 5th lefties from the pen.

Civale could be an option as well plenty of teams need a vet starter. The Astros have a ton of injury issues and not a ton of depth. Shay Whitcomb would be a great return, they can have Rob Z or Alexander if they want as well.

Clearly they would just DFA the bottom of their roster. Nobody is going to trade for those players. Heck they got Civale last year for next to nothing when he was making 60% of what he is now. He’s barely pitched this year. He needs to perform first to rebuild any value.

Alexander has an ERA over 5, if the Brewers dropped him he’d  accept an outright assignment to AAA if it meant he had to forfeit his salary to refuse.

Alexander is making just a million, I am not saying we would get much of anything but with all the pitching shortages and his track record there should be a small market.

Civale had 3.57 ERA after we traded for him and 3.00 era in the 2 starts since he has been off the DL. His 8 million dollar salary would play into it but is only a problem for a few teams and we could likely eat most of it since it is budgeted. Civale may have more trade value in a week or two than last year with a couple good starts.

I agree....it just makes way too much sense for a trade to happen here sometime over the next couple of weeks.  I know every team dreams of this "problem," but we simply have too many SP's and not nearly enough spots in the rotation. In fact, it would seem (if they all stay healthy) that we could trade one of them and still have way too many options for the handful of open spots.

Civale would definitely make the most sense to trade. Obviously, a FA at the end of this season and a veteran guy that could be a nice back-end SP for a team in contention that is desperate for innings out of their rotation.

I don't hate the Whitcomb idea with the Astros, but in reading up on him - sounds like he's a pretty major defensive liability at anywhere on the IF outside of 2B maybe?  So, that might be a non-starter for the Brewers FO?

What other contending teams are in desperation mode right now with their starting pitching?

Smith-Shawver just went down with what appears might be a very serious elbow injury (TJ?).  What could we get from the Braves in exchange for one of our SP?

Would we have any interest in Nacho Alvarez, who appears is working his way back from an injury this year?

I'm sure we would, but the Braves would have 0 interest in moving a borderline top-100 SS for any of our rentals especially as they're currently employing Nick Allen as their everyday SS.

We get IKF, the Dodgers get Civale, and the Pirates get a prospect or 2 from the Dodgers.

We upgrade SS and 3B and relieve some overcrowding at SP, the Dodgers get a healthy vet pitcher to help with all their injuries. The Pirates save some money and get a prospect or two.
