This season isn’t really fun anymore.   But it’s better than being 10 games under .500

first time all year I looked to see where we are in wild card standings.  
 

I know the hitters aren’t that good.   But I can’t believe how bad they are now.

How many runs will we score against Sasaki, Yamamoto, Wrobleski, and Skubal? At least we're gonna miss Snell.

I wonder if Freeman is going to play. He looked ok-ish after getting up but that fall looked like serious impact.

You could literally throw up any random set of pitchers and will be around 2-3 a game.   
 

we just need the other team to make a bunch of errors to score

If being the best team in the NL isn't fun, imagine being the fan of any other NL team that's literally worse.

I'm not sure why you're looking at the WC standings when we're 3 games ahead of the Cubs, but ok.

I feel Aaron Ashby lost that game for us yesterday by not covering 1st base and letting Cronenworth beat him to the bag and then not keeping his head in the game and letting Tatis' score from 2nd on that same play.

It makes sense to look at the Wild Card standings since the Brewers now have such a small lead for the division, only the Astros have a smaller leader in MLB. Good to know they are pretty much locked into the 4 seed if it comes to that.

I know the mood around here is dour (and rightfully so after blowing two late-inning leads in San Diego), but I do think this slide back to the pack is right in line with expectations during this stretch.

It's really hard to play 17 straight games with two separate West Coast trips. So far, we're 7-6 during that stretch, which I think a lot of folks would have taken at the start. The Cubs have played well and cut our division lead in half, so credit to them for that. I still say this division is going to come down to our 7 September games against CHC. Their Sept. schedule is tougher than ours, so August is kind of a hang in there month.

At the end of the day, I'd love to win this division (4 years in a row and 5 of 6 is dynastic, no matter the October results), but, as with last year, I'd prefer not to the play the Cubs in the playoffs. It's just too much fake narrative to pile on top of something already mostly random. If we do have to play them, I'd rather do it as the WC team, which I know is weird, but it just gives you less to lose going in.

Every team in baseball needs to hit the reset button at least once during the year. Today's a good time to do that. 41 games to go, and we have the best record in the NL, tied for the most wins in MLB, a 3-game division lead, and virtual assurance of another year of playoff baseball. Big-picture, that's nothing to sneeze at. Hopefully, we can wash away the bad taste of SD and grab a few wins this weekend. I have a good feeling about the Cubs coming back to Earth, too.

Probably not.   But they have significantly better players than us.    And a way bigger lead in the division      Like significantly bigger.     Plus the brewers are a perfect team to get right against this weekend. 
 

its a lot more fun playing a team that you know can’t score.

Because if Cubs win today against the Nationals that will 15 wins in there last 20 games and were playing .500 ball in the same stretch and seem to be getting worse.

I admire and envy your optimism.

But I fear we are a first half team. Rolling along with the relative low stress of the first half of the season, but tending to tighten up as the series become more meaningful. Of course I have no empirical evidence.  😕😁

I certainly get the feeling. I feel like we've put away the division really early the last few years, though. 

In 2024 we did miss out on the bye and limped to the finish a bit. And in 2025 we missed out on 100 wins. But the last genuine collapse I remember was 2014.

I think, if the Cubs do catch us, it'll be because their pitching stabilizes and their offense continues to mash. It'll be more about them, in other words.

Still. I do think we'll find out how good this team really is in September. It's absolutely legit to question the offense and bullpen depth. I know we're right on line with our Pythagorean, but it does feel like we have some regression candidates (as well as some positive regression candidates).

Edit: I guess you could argue 2022 was a collapse, though that team always felt deeply flawed.

I had a good chat with a few Padres fans on the train after the game yesterday. They were all obviously thrilled to have swept "the #1 team in baseball". I commented how they are hitting the ball pretty well right now and they were saying that the entire team was in a deep hitting slump a month ago, the season was left for dead, etc. Gave some perspective on how when you're slumping it feels like you'll never get another hit and when you're hot it feels like you'll never lose again. 

The truest test of any team is how they handle adversity, so we'll see what this team has in them. 

We all agreed that the Brewers should go sweep the Dodgers.

I'd put it more on Bauers since Ashby is a lefty falling off the other direction vs a fast runner, he barely hesitated at all on it.  IMO if Bauers books it right away he beats him.  instead he assumed a toss right away and didn't even try.

In hindsight, I wonder after Bauers waited and then knew Ashby wouldn't win the race if he'd have pump faked the toss but threw home or caught Tatis in a rundown would've worked. Would've been a very heads up play, would probably need a camera angle to see where Tatis was at that point to really know. Plus the way Sanchez was yesterday on d he'd have dropped the ball.

Besides the O in general, I'd put in on a combo of Patrick/Ashby being bad. That might've been the worst Patrick threw all year and his results could've been way way worse.  Ashby has been so shaky with runners on for a while, I'd have gone with Megill there instead.

Ball wasn't hit hard, and Bauers fielded it pretty far from the bag.  With the lefty up, Turang should have been playing closer to 1B and I think could have gotten it.  Bauers should have let Turang field it and went to the bag.  Have to know where the guy next to you is positioned.

The thing is, not one of the runs that scored yesterday earned their way on base:
1st run - walk
2nd run - walk
3rd run - extra innings automatic baserunner
4th run - HBP

Quite possibly. I don't know what the spray chart says for Cronenworth AFA shading him one way or the other as a second baseman. I'd like to know if Bauers was yelling 'home' to Ashby immediately after feeding him since doing things on the diamond other than pitching isn't exactly Ashby's strong suit.

Of course, it had to be a 3-2 pitch which meant the runners were off. Otherwise Bauers has an easy flip to 2B for the force. It was that kinda day.

That would've been lovely, and maybe the most heads-up play of the entire season.

So let's say we lose all four and bats are still dead. Then what? Do we bring up anyone to get a spark going? Or do we just do nothing and hope for a miracle? 

Honesty I'd rather be in a slump now and figure it out and get hot for the playoffs. There's no way we don't get hot again.
