I still fondly remember Manny Pineapple.  Nobody ever ran on that guy.

Questions are a burden.   And answers a prison for one's self.

Good point, but wouldn't pitch-outs help prevent those?

It's math. Guys are running less than .1% of the time. that isn't worth a ball.

So, the theory is: teams don't pitch out because they don't need to? That's a good theory!

My question is: WHY don't they need to? Especially since it's theoretically easier for baserunners with bigger bases and limited number of disengagements.

I would guess it has to do with catcher and middle infielder mechanics and positioning. But I'd love to hear other theories.

I think teams don't pitch out because the nerds have said a pitch out isn't valuable enough in suppressing CS to give up a free ball. In theory if a guy is stealing a pitch out probably helps get a CS but the baserunner isn't going to run every time you throw a pitch out.

I think teams have more focused on catcher's exchanging the ball quicker and pitchers getting the ball to home sooner to suppress stealing.

This can't be true. .1% is one in a thousand. WAY more guys than that are running.

I'm sure this is part of it. Maybe the biggest part. I could definitely be convinced that the vast majority of it is the idea that an automatic ball is a bad thing, and it far outweighs the odds of guessing right on a pitch out, and then executing that pitchout correctly significantly more often than you would throwing on a normal pitch.

So, did the Miz pitch long enough to hopefully get the W?

He went 5 so he qualifies for the win

Gotta give William credit on that challenge.  That thing had wicked movement.

Definitely helps that Ashby pretty much nailed the target. Feel like when a pitcher does that it really helps the catcher to be confident it caught the edge because they are going to be putting the target up on the edge.

I meant 1%. I suck at my phone's keyboard

1 attempt per hundred pitches give or take

It's cool. 1 in 100 still seems way low, though. Not to beat a dead horse, but it seems to me that if a random guy gets to first, his odds of trying to steal are way higher than 1 percent.

I'm  laughing at myself.  Tonite I just noticed William is wearing a silvery glittered belt.  Hubby said he's worn it a lot this season.

Unless DL has passed Ashby on the leverage depth chart, I have no idea why Ashby is pitching multiple innings up 5-0.

Ashby hasn't pitched in a few days. I wouldn't read much into how people are used in the next few weeks.  Some people are getting challenged while the games mean less and less.

Either that or someone was mistaken that Ashby could get the win there...
