Game 2 - Packers @ Jets - Sunday, Sept. 20th @ 12:00 PM

I'm anxious to put (whatever that was Sunday) behind us and move on to game two against the Jets, but I fear the ghost of that game will haunt us until they can patch that OL. 

It looked like we had the wrong people out there and/or people out there weren't working together. ZBB certainly showed rust of not playing in forever and he suddenly things he is a running back now.... Both our LG and RG looked every much the end of the roster filler they should be.  You might not like the signing of Aaron Banks last year,  but when healthy he is an average LG and average would be a major upgrade.  Maybe it is time to revisit Belton at RG? 

Thankfully we don't face a team with Brian Flores... Wouldn't it have been so much better if Miami picked Flores over Hafley

I don't want to sully a new GT with sour grapes, but last week was so damning I just don't think this is a competitor. It wouldn't surprise if they went 9-8 and grabbed #7 again, but I would prefer a faceplant to that if it meant changing the guard completely. I'm tired of the 3 stooges allowed to celebrate being average with unlimited leashes. 

That said, I think they're better than the Jets if they can manage not to blow the double digit lead they'll most likely build. One thing I thought was odd last week was that Matt wasn't "inventive" with running the ball, which they probably actually need to try more of this year with how bad they are up front.

There’s still room on the Sweet Meteor of Death bandwagon. 0-2 after losing to the Jets and that meteor starts looking visible without a telescope.

I don't know, the Jets looked really good Sunday against the Titans. They might be a halfway decent team this year. Don't know what the line is, but if I were a betting man I'd go in on the Jets. Adam Schein has the Jets winning and last May he picked the Packers to finish last in the division and missing the playoffs.

Losing this game is completely within the realm of possibilities. The Packers just aren't good this year. Show me a playoff team who is bad in the trenches on both sides of the ball. 

They are a good skill group on offense and almost nothing else - without Parsons especially, name one playmaker on the defense.  

I just didn't see what people saw in this team. The consensus seemed to be they'd win 10 or 11 games and I just don't see it. 

Worst part of all that? They don't have a first round pick.

The silver lining about that is that Gute will still be here and he would just draft some raw projectable athletic freak with an off the charts RAS score that was viewed as a consensus reach who will basically redshirt as a rookie, be a rotational player in year 2, be injured in year 3 and finally be expected to contribute in year 4.

I'm looking at the Jets roster, and I'm guessing the Jets aren't so much improved but the Titans may be the worst team in the league.  

In terms of the matchup, I like the fact that the Jets don't possess much of a pass-rush along the DLine.  They can rush the passer, but it look a little one-dimensional as most of it comes from the outside in the form of David Bailey, Will McDonald and Kingsley Enagbare.  On the DL, David Onyemata was a pretty good pass-rusher back in his Falcon days, but not so much anymore.  T'Vondre Sweat is a king-sized NT that will get doubled every time he is on the field.  Harrison Phillips is a try-hard, blue-collar worker...but a pass-rusher he is not.  If this DLine is defeating blockers, getting into gaps and causing havoc, the offensive line is even worse than most people think it is.  LB-Demario Davis is older than dirt but still a good player.  S-Minkah Fitzpatrick is another solid veteran add.  Rookie D'Angelo Ponds was hurt and did not play this week, sounds like he is questionable for this week.  The cornerback group appears to be a below average group. 

Dylan Parham was a nice signing at guard to stabilize the offensive line.  Tippmann looked like a bust early but, from what I understand, has improved and is no longer a liability.  They still have Josh Myers, so C will be a weak spot.  And the two young first round pick tackles, they could be much improved this year or maybe mediocre.

Not a fan of Geno Smith and have never been a fan.  Hall and Allen are a plus running back combo in my book.  Garret Mitchell is good and maybe Adonai Mitchell will have a breakthrough season (although he hasn't been good so far).  Sound like Omar Cooper will miss this game, which helps because the depth at WR isn't great to begin with.  They have talent at TE, but those guys are young.

They need to do what the Panthers did last year.  Run the ball, grind that clock down, limit the number of Packer possessions.

Packers are a 3 1/2 point favorite as I type this, and that seems about right to me.

Not really.  His 2023 PFF overall grade as a rookie was 61, 21st among 36 qualifying centers. 

In 2024 it was 73.4, 9th among qualifying centers.

In 2025 it was 66, 33rd among 81 qualifying guards.

Like last week, people putting money on the opposition.  Packers opened at a 4.5 point favorite, and as of this morning they are a 3 point favorite.

Also, Minkah Fitzpatrick will not play due to a groin injury.

I wouldn't touch this game as a gambler. Way too much up in the air, mostly how good actually are the Jets (I don't think very good) and how bad are the Packers (worse than you may think).

Even if they go 1-16 this year, they’re likely safe.
If the Packers fired them both, they’d absolutely have interest in their GM position and HC position (there is only 32 of each), but the Packers probably would not be the first choice for candidates with multiple options. 

Why? Because Parsons and Love are tied to the Packers through 2028. Any new GM would be expected to fix a roster to compete while being substantially constrained financially by Love and Parson’s contract, missing top draft capital from the Parson’s trade, etc.

To fire LaFleur after this season would mean giving a new coach more job security than the GM has, and offering a shorter than usual contract to a HC will disinterest candidates with other choices. 

The reality is unless a multi-season collapse occurs, both Gutekunst and LaFleur are likely to be with Green Bay through 2028 when a new GM could actually reshape the roster instead of mostly administering the prior GMs decisions.

If so...that extension was a MASSIVE mistake.

Packers have a long history of being patient with HCs and GMs unlike the Browns or Jets. There's still good job security in a Packers position and that's attractive. And a GM wouldn't have to have his whole job ride on the success of a QB he drafted. Plus every GM in the League would be happy to pay Parsons what he's making now.

Sure, Parsons’ performance isn’t the problem;  it’s that the other players around him are not good enough. The pro-rated part of his bonus makes it impossible for the Packers to move him in any way (even for picks) before 2028.
 

A new GM before 2028 would be expected to win while still using Gutekunst’s core, instead of a full rebuild. Plus with Love and Parsons taking up 33% of the cap, there will not be room  to sign difference making FAs.

All the more reason to fire Policy, Gutey, and MLF.  Just a complete joke that Gutey and MLF were not fired last season.

I don’t disagree with you, but again,  the organization’s hands were tied the moment they traded for Parsons.

You don’t trade two first round picks and a player for Parsons, give him 136 million dollars guaranteed  to then fire your HC and GM less than 6 months later and bring in someone else to run a core they didn’t build and are not free to dismantle. 
 

It “can” be done but it puts an organization in Raider/Brown territory to do so.

Right now the organization is in it's worst shape since before Ron Wolf. And yes it's worse than the Mike Sherman era.

They're in a pretty comparable spot to 2005, when Thompson got there and had to immediately start cutting costs. Led to not extending several OL, Wahle, Rivera, they were very bad that season, but quickly got things going again a couple years later. I don't see any of that happening without a new HC, the same thing they did back then.
