Garza to DL, right shoulder tendinitis; Knebel recalled

Matt Garza's forgettable 2015 season took another turn on Monday, when the Milwaukee Brewers placed him on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder tendinitis.

 

Reliever Corey Knebel, who was sent to Class AAA Colorado Springs in advance of the Brewers' weekend series in Cincinnati, has been recalled.

So any thoughts on whether his tendinitis caused the poor season or whether his poor season "caused" the tendinitis (i.e. you've been sucking... take two weeks off with tendinitis)?

 

If its the former, we at least have some hope that he can bounce back when he returns.

Not that I had high hopes that Garza was going to be able to be traded anyway... but this probably eliminates all hope, yes?

I don't think he has any value at this point. Maybe he comes back in Sept , pitches well and can get moved in the off season

Plenty of teams will be willing to take a chance on Garza at 2/$30M after seeing the Red Sox set the bar at 4/$84M with Porcello and after seeing what Cueto and Grienke (if he opts out) will get.

 

And Porcello is having just as bad of a season as Garza.

Garza's under contract through 2017. It didn't make any sense to sell low on him. If he starts off well next year, he'll have more value with less remaining on his contract than he would have this year even if he had been pitching decent.

 

Kind of surprised they'd replace him with Knebel. Why not just activate Davis? They'd still have 12 pitchers. Now are they going to send Goforth back down or a position player, either Gomez or Peterson?

There is little reason for Garza to report anything other than a major injury. He is better off playing poorly through almost injury than reporting an injury and playing well.

Just in time for Davis to come back. There wouldn't be another start for Cravy before the All Star Break so might as well send him back down to get another position player on the roster.

Also, pitching through a minor injury could lead to further injury, not worth the risk in a lost season

Some of his salary is tied to staying healthy. Not saying that is why he would do that but it is the only reason i can think of why he would.

If he misses starts a low option is available to the Brewers. If he doesn't miss starts a huge option kicks in. Per Cot's.

This makes sense. Garza is still reasonably young, so for him to suddenly pitch so badly made me wonder if something was amiss.

 

I just hope there's nothing more than a little tendinitis.

 

For Garza, the goal should be to get him totally healthy, then come back when ready. If that's in two weeks, great. If it's in 10 weeks, that's fine as well. He's unlikely to be traded this year due to the injury, so it would be to our interest for him to just come back next year at full strength, and put up some good numbers. If the team is doing well, he's a key part of that. If not, he can be a good trade chip.

Tendinitis in a pitcher at mid season doesn't make any sense, the muscles and tendons are well conditioned by the end of spring training. Elbow tendinitis usually equals TJ surgery... there has a to a be a tear or loose body floating around in a joint to cause that kind of irritation in those well conditioned areas. Shoulder tendinitis... well that worries me.

 

Shoulder inflammation worries me because shoulder repairs aren't anywhere near as successful as TJ surgery.

But for some reason, every time we sign another one of these guys as a free agent in the offseason, people cheer the deal because they're a "sure thing," while prospects fail all the time.
