Brewers trade for 1B Rowdy Tellez from Blue Jays

Per Ken Rosenthal: Brewers acquiring 1B Rowdy Tellez from Blue Jays, sources tell @TheAthletic. Return believed to include RHP Trevor Richards. Unclear if other pieces are in deal. Tellez has been in Triple A since June 22. Richards came from Rays in Adames trade.

Per Jeff Passan: First baseman Rowdy Tellez is headed to the Brewers, as @Ken_Rosenthal said. Didn’t have a spot in Toronto. Jays need relief, and right-hander Trevor Richards, sources said, is going to Toronto. He’s now been dealt twice in the last six weeks.

EDIT: Brewers also included RHP Bowden Francis in the deal.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

why

Why not? Brewers clearly view Cousins and Sanchez as staying bullpen arms. Tellez offers platoon options at first and likely a decision to be made once Vogey is healthy. At worst, he is depth at a lacking position.

Hopefully, this gets Hiura into a platoon.

Don't understand why they try to make Keston hit the lefties in the platoon. His career has shown he hits righties much better.

If this doesn't end somehow in Tellez and Vogelbach having some sort of reality show where they cruise the AmFam Field parking lot visiting tailgate parties and slamming burgers and beer, I'm going to be disappointed. This team is certainly not lacking in the personality department, that's for sure.

Tellez destroyed lefties last year as well.

I hope we are getting another player back in return. A straight up 1-1 trade does not make sense. Richards is a decent bullpen piece that can spot start. That's got to be worth more than a AAAA 1B/DH with some upside potential. Ron Robinson hit it on its head. Stat wise, this is Vogelbach's clone.

A lefty bat that hits lefties better? You don’t see that often.
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Only thing I can figure is that they really like Tellez's LHH bat and power potential at AmFam. He grades out as a solid defensive 1B as well, which is probably a step up from Vogelbach or Hiura. He's also just over two years younger than Vogelbach.

I guess this sort of addresses the need for some thump in the lineup as long as Tellez can hit well enough. Tellez did have a fairly decent season in 2019.

Although this would thin our bullpen even more so that's another issue that's gonna be on people's minds.

I’m okay with a deal that takes a shot on a 26-year old with massive raw power, but a little concerned that he appears to be poor defensively at 1B.

Looks like he has hit into a bit of bad luck this year...hitting just .209 but has an xBA of .251. Has an expected OPS of > .750 based on his balls in play.

they did give up a lot. Richards straight up would have been a lot, but they gave up their best triple A starter too. he better work out.

Obviously we don't know the price of other options and whom is actually available, so while in a vacuum this trade is hard to understand, but it was probably the best they could do, with all of MLB knowing they needed a 1st baseman.

he had no errors last year.

Maybe there is another deal brewing which includes Hiura.

Man, the Brewers had tremendous pitching depth and they sure are burning through it quickly despite remaining relatively healthy.
