Obviously the Onara was terrible, but (I think) he was actually more consistent than people give him credit for. He was giving the pitchers a couple inches on the 3rd base side of the plate and he took away an inch or two from the bottom of the zone.

The ump was so bad that reading the game thread, a casual observer would think we lost the game. He was so bad that we're kinda upset that our guy benefited from the calls at the end of the game to help us cushion our first place lead.

I have to admit, after the beating that both Garcia and Narvaez took on this board all last year and the past offseason, it makes me very happy to see both playing well this season. It's almost as if the results attained during 60 games played in front of no fans during a pandemic shouldn't be taken as the gospel regarding who a player really is. Who would have thought?

What an awful division. Mahle is the Reds best starter this year. With the way he was pitching any other team would’ve knocked him out before getting through the 6th.

 

Likewise Houser should’ve gotten pounded well before bad defense allowed the men he put on base to score

Apparently Brian O’Nora was arrested along with 13 others in a sting this past December. Bad strike calls might be the least of his issues, yikes.

What’s crazy is they the umpiring has gotten better every year in the statcast era. But it’s still not nearly good enough. It just makes you wonder how bad it used to be. I wish there was an umpire scorecard for the 1997 World Series…

This game is a good example of how bad it used to be. The corners were wide open sometimes. I remember once Charlie Hayes nearly got hit in the leg by a pitch about a foot inside, called strike. People say they have no accountability today, back then there was actually none. I imagine for those around in the 70's or 80's they'd say it was even worse then.

I was around in the 70’s and 80’s.

 

I think the biggest difference is that fewer games were on TV, there were no strike zone boxes on televised games, and there were no websites to show visual presentations of where pitches crossed the plate relative to a strike zone. That made it a lot more likely that you either wouldn’t see where pitches were or would simply move on from what seemed like bad calls.

 

I would say the same thing about replay. Nobody really cared for more than a few seconds if a runner came off the base by a fraction of an inch for a fraction of a second. There were no super slow motion and stop action replays to show that it happened. So, a runner who beat a throw was safe and we moved on. And a bang bang play was just that and whatever the umpire called was the call and the game moved on, except for the occasional vehement argument that added some color to the game without holding it up for several minutes while we wait for someone in NYC to dissect the replays to tell us what happened.

 

In many ways the good old days really were better.

At the game last night, I was ready for the crowd to storm the field after that non-reversal on the replay. They showed several good angles and it seemed quite clear the tag was not made. Every one was upset over that one.

 

Was nice going to a game for once where they won anyway.
