Wisconsin Football 2022- The Jim Leonhard Show ends, the Luke Fickell era begins

I sure am getting the vibe that the interim part of Leonhard's title is either removed in the next couple of days or he is not getting the job.  Not this past week, but during the preceding week there was an interview with Leonhard where he made it pretty obvious that he was growing impatient with the process.  They just lost one of their WR commits and other schools are really going to ramp up their poaching efforts the longer this goes on.  If McIntosh is going to do a complete break and go with someone totally different, then losing players is a part of the process.  But it is a bit foolish to drag this out if the thought is that Leonhard will probably be the best candidate after they take a look around.

It's 2022.  If you don't think that the University of Wisconsin has policies and procedures that need to be followed to ensure that under-represented minorities have the opportunity to apply for positions...

Leonhard is their guy.  I can assure you of that.  But the athletic department needs to operate within the frameworks of the university.  And the WR decommitting has little to nothing to do with the head coaching situation (they just got a commit for the class of 2024 and will be getting another commit for 2023 today or tomorrow) and everything to do with being offered by Oregon and Texa$ A&M.

HS QB Cole Lacrue from Colorado committed minutes ago.

Recruits who take the time to analyze the situation are probably pretty confident how the Leonhard thing will unfold.

They can't wait that long with the 2023 recruiting class still in need of finalizing. not to mention the post-season transfer window. Job will probably be posted sometime within the next few weeks, with Leonhard being named permanent HC thereafter. Definitely before a bowl game (which looks likely at this point).

I'm not sharing an opinion as to what I believe they should do, I'm saying there are UW bylaws(and maybe even State Laws) about how they have to go about the hiring process. They have to consider all qualified applicants and give them time.

It's not like ND or the Packers, they are required to list the job for a period of time.

If they decide to hire Leonhard, I'm sure he'll be out there recruiting and giving the wink and a nod and telling the recruits his job is a mere formality, but...the AD can't just hire a guy on a whim or without completing the process.

I'm not saying it makes sense in athletics whereas it may in other jobs, but...UW has a lot of handicaps.

MAYBE because they fired PC early in the season they can list it earlier, but I still thought it was Feb or sometime around then.

I went to UW for undergrad and am there for grad school/work there currently. I understand the process quite well. They can post the job at any time. They did the same thing when Greg Gard was named the permanent HC in-season, just before the NCAA tournament. They do have to allow a certain amount of time for people to apply, but once that time has expired, they can go ahead and make the hire. Why my guess is that the job will be posted within the next few weeks, and that Leonhard will officially be hired before the bowl. There's little doubt at this point that the job is his.

They didn't remove the interim tag from Gard for over 3 months(again, early march IIRC).

Yes. But they can remove it from Leonhard whenever they want, too. They just need to make sure they post the job for a specific amount of time before they do so. There's a process, but it's essentially a formality at this point.

Yes...that's what I said.

I see no reason to worry about anti-cronyism rules that UW has to follow. Leonhard has a trump card that he's already demonstrated he can win in the job. And everyone knows it.

I don't see it having any impact on recruiting.

Rumors circulating that Braelon Allen is contemplating a transfer, with Michigan and USC being potentially involved. Has followed Michigan's RB coach on Twitter recently. Possible that contact was made shortly after the PC firing and that BA has now cooled down, but there does seem to be at least some smoke here. Boy, what a massive loss that would be, given our RB tradition and how strongly pro-Wisconsin he's been throughout the last couple years.

Sources who have spoken with players in the program have said that there was smoke, but no fire.  Allen was upset with the firing of Chryst at the time and started poking around a little, but Allen is still booking NIL appearances in the state and is on track to make around $750K in NIL this year.

If Allen transfers, my interest in college football will drop even further.

So your reason for going to games would be the same as before Barry Alvarez entered the picture?

I guess Allen is on a group chat with a lot of former Badger RB greats.  I wonder if they talked him off the ledge.

I suspected that this would turn out to be the case. A transfer just never made sense, despite the clear smoke.

Him, GM, and a resurgent OL and WR core could make for a dynamite offense and a memorable season next year.

Perhaps Braelon Allen will be saying, "I'll stay if Mertz goes."  Mertz has no clue out there today against Iowa.  He is abysmal, and that is a compliment.

That 2019 class headlined by Brown and Mertz is a massive failure with both ending up as colossal busts.  Luckily the next few classes can't really bust since they've recruited almost nobody.

It's a shame that Benton is graduating, because I think guys like Johnson and Njongmeta have stepped up and played pretty well the last few weeks.  I thought, for the most part, the defensive front seven looked really weak at the beginning of this season, but now I'd really like their outlook for next year if Benton was returning.

By god was Graham Mertz awful yesterday.  I'll be happy when he's either gone or graduated. It sucks that the kid came in and played for a coach that it turns out just wasn't interested all that much in coaching, because he might have had a chance at being decent if Cryst had any mustard on him to give half an effort.

Sad news about a former UW player:

"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006
