Take a look at the Cardinal's pitching and tell me that they're going to win the division without making a few trades.

I have no doubt that they will be picking up some pitching. It just remains to be seen who it will be.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

Couldn't you say the same thing for us and bats though?

When you're a competitor, you can't help but react when something like that balk occurs. Can't reverse it? Wouldn't do any good? Didn't have a good look at it?

None of that matters. I'm just dumbfounded Counsell simply stood there with his "analytics" face in that situation. My jaw dropped when the call was made, only surpassed by his dead-in-the-water reaction.

Kudos to Lauer. If there was a "big game" for him this season, this was it & he was magnificent.

Here's the deal: Counsell isn't going anywhere. If anyone it would have to be your hitting coach/es. I know the song & dance about how it's not the hitting coaches' fault, and I largely agree. But things like this happen, and change for the sake of change, as unfair as it is, oftentimes works in sports. I've coached (obviously not at this level), and a different set of eyes, a different way of conveying info, even if it's the same info, can sometimes be all it takes. Plus, frankly I'd love to think that, if it happens, the position player group would feel responsible for it. Anything to try to light a fire, to feel a sense of consequence.

Rant over. This organization seldom if ever does stuff like that.

I'm not a big fan of emotional, in the moment responses to things, but if there was ever a moment for Counsell to try to sell a call for tomorrow, that was it. I know the ol "show your guys you'll go to battle for them" mantra, and maybe they already know that, or maybe we don't.  None of us know what kind of relationships these dudes have all forged over this season and prior.

There's a time and a place for everything, and that was as good a time as any to go out and ask the ump if his lens prescription needs renewing.

I didn’t see the balk.  Why was it a bad call?

He wasn't making any kind of motion that (by judgement) should have looked deceptive to the runners.  He (appeared) to be trying to get a new sign.  Balks are judgement calls, so it's really open to interpretation, and it was just a bad call.

It wasn’t a balk. At least from what I saw. Absolutely terrible, the fact CC didn’t go out and argue the call has me scratching my head. It looked like he was mentally checked out. Totally unacceptable.

Crazy that the ump would decide the game that way.  Isn’t the intent of the balk rule is so you don’t fool the runners unfairly?  This seems way off track and useless.

Thanks for the explanation.

Just want to also say, I'm not a Suter fan but I thought he was fine. I understood why he was used. He got a couple of outs, one legitimate hit & one little league fly ball by Flores that was a hit because he didn't hit it well enough for it to be caught.

LIES

More Dreckman: "Not to mention, LaRussa wasn't involved. Buck Showalter wasn't in the house. Lou Piniella retired. Billy Martin has gone to his reward. What, Craig Counsell is going to say something? Give me a break".

Where exactly does he "bring his hands up"? HE LITERALLY DOESNT EVEN MOVE THEM.

What a joke!

Fine the ump making this balk call  and the other ump trying to explain it away!

Fine Counsell for not reacting!

Can we seriously file a protest with the commissioner's office or something? Like if that's how the ump is going to rationalize the call....

They can, but it will have absolutely zero effect.  It's basically just a formal way of saying "this sucked and we're mad about it".

I don't even know if teams protest anymore.

How many tie games in the history of baseball were decided because of a balk because the pitcher stepped off the rubber to re-set without starting any semblance of a motion?  It’s unprecedented insanity.

I watch Jomboy regularly.   I highly recommend it to any baseball fan. There is a lot of crappy umpiring.  And I’m all for electronic ball and strike calls.  That stuff changes games.  A bad ball or strike call in a 1-1 or 2-1 situation can totally shift the power in an at bat and effect an outcome.  Pitch framing is too prominent.  Let’s play the game in the right situations.

Unless CC agreed with that ump...or was just too disgusted.
