mark mathias & antoine kelly to texas for matt bush

Kelly seems way to much to give up for Bush. Granted if Bush can pitch well with 2 more years of control this could be fine. Kelly is still a ways away and I doubt anyone would take him in the rule 5 but maybe.

I've read enough of the hype on Kelly.  I'd rather not see him go based on that, but his actual production in games isn't very good outside of his first year of Rookie ball.  High K's, sure, but only about a 2:1 K:BB ratio.

I get the love of great tools, but so far it's not exactly translating.  Remember the love for Cy Sneed, the guy we gave Houston for Villar?  Lots of promise and even made the bigs... but the results sure weren't good.

On the flip side, Matt Bush looks like a good acquisition for the bullpen.  Mathias is just an AAAA guy.  Kelley is at least a few years away.  This looks like the right kind of deal for right now.

I'm torn on this trade.  Matt Bush is not your normal 36 year old RP.  He was a long time hitting prospect and does not have a lot of mileage on his arm.  He also is controllable for 2 more years after 2022.  That being said, relievers are volatile and who know if he will even play for 2 more years.  I was really high on Kelly, had him in my top 10 prospects.  Maybe I'm too bullish on him, cause I don't think Bush is worth a top 10 prospect.

He clearly makes our bullpen better though.  Is Bush + Rogers > Hader?  Probably.  Only time will tell.

the brewers didn't call you to get your opinion before the trade?

I’m stunned people are intrigued about a guy who ran over another humans head while driving drunk, fled the scene  and went to prison. He’s a pile **** who shouldn’t be in baseball, let alone play on a team that implores you to bring out the family

Not excusing his DUI a decade ago, but he didn't kill anybody for the record.

Not that Mark Mathias is all that great... but he was one of the few on the team actually hitting well this year.  And we get another reliever?  With this and Hader's trade, we are +2 in the BP with a few injured guys getting healthy.

And still no bats. I guess I'm not getting what we are fixing at this point.

Antoine Kelly might become something...but I just the feeling that he is going to be a "meh" BP guy in 4 years.

"Rock, sometime, when the team is up against it, and the breaks are beating the boys, tell 'em to go out there with all they got and win just one for the Uecker. I don't know where I'll be then, Rock but I'll know about it; and I'll be happy."

Back to the trade people.  Attacking each other isn't allowed.

36 years old reliever  for a top Pitching Prospect if this is David Stearns  last year here he going out with a wow affect not liking this  trade at all

I don’t like this trade.  A) you get a bad guy, and B) you gave up too good of a prospect in terms of potential ceiling

Yes, Kelly has control issues but that’s what the minors are for.

I am surprised that Stearns or Attanasio would ok this one.

In any event, winning is not at all costs.

I hope they lose every game he pitches

But how do you feel about the trade? I don't think you have given your opinion yet..

I like Antoine Kelly, but he is more Kodi Medeiros than Aaron Ashby from my viewings. The upside people are claiming in this thread just isn't there for me.

I don’t think it moves the needle one way or the other. Mathias sucks, and Kelly is years away from the major leagues.

Kelly was rule 5 eligible this winter and unlikely to be added to the 40 man to protect him. I have zero issues giving away that type of prospect for a good reliever with multiple years of control

What makes you think he wouldn't have been added? I guess it leaves an extra spot for one of the other guys, but I thought Kelly was a near lock.

The Brewers have invested so little in pitching lately that I hate giving up pitching, especially pitching that has a chance to be truly special. Kelly has that chance, be it in the rotation or the pen.

Bush's stuff is pretty great 97 fastball, 92 cutter, 81 curve. Should play well with Williams,, Roger's, and Box.

Kelly still a tough pill to swallow.

I don't think he would have been added mainly because he is still pretty far from the majors and has put up mediocre numbers at high A.

Yeah, I'm there too  High end arm with control issues.  We've had many of those.  If it works, he could be a really good BP arm, but the likelyhood of him hitting is low, IMO.

With Cousins starting a rehab assignment and Strzelecki looking like another breakout reliever, the bullpen is getting pretty stacked.

I'm seeing that Kelly was ranked 16th in the Brewers system.  But even if that is off by a little,  the Brewers do not have one of the highest ranked farm systems to begin with.  Doesn't seem like the return was that out of line. I'm usually on the side of trading a lottery ticket for proven outcomes.

I don't hate giving up Mathias, who needs the opportunity to get playing time with an organization that can afford to give it to him, or even Kelly, who is going to have to go on the 40 but is still a couple years out.

Just would have targeted a reliever who isn't 36 years old with two TJs (even despite the "younger arm") and who has demonstrated a better track record of success rather than just now having a career year,

This guy is obviously not a choir boy. He made some terrible mistakes earlier in his life. He paid his debt to society. Maybe he’s changed, maybe he’s still a bad guy. This isn’t the first time the crew has brought in some guys with checkered pasts. Some people pass judgement pretty quickly.

A 36 year old reliever with a spotty track record should not cost Antoine Kelly. Kelly's control is volatile but he's got high leverage reliever ability down the line if starting doesn't work. Not the type of flier you give up for a Matt Bush.

I don't really get these moves. I was alright with the Hader trade as I thought it'd lead to another trade, but presumably a bat. Josh Bell for instance.

Maybe that's not fair, but I really hate trading away Kelly for Matt Bush. I know he's been outstanding this year, but 36, his...history and I thought highly of Kelly.

Welp, hope the Brewers pitching lab can get the most out of Lamet, help Rogers get back on track and keep Bush on track. That's a deeper BP. I just didn't expect quite so much of the deadline to center around the Bullpen.

Still time left. 40 man roster is FULL+ ... Stearns isn't done dealing.

I’m pretty sure it’s the first guy they brought in that did hard time in prison (3 years).

Average Joe goes to prison for a violent felony, he’ll struggle to get a job after and be ostracized. But throw a baseball 97 mph, and we’ll cheer for you because you paid your dues.

I can't say I'm happy about the history that is coming out , but at some point you do need to let people pay their debt and move on.

If he hasn't learned from his past mistakes (I'm assuming the front office checked this out), then I'd be pretty upset.
