As many of you know, I'm a Padres fan and I'm also curious to see what the late years of these contracts do to the franchise.

In the meantime, it's wildly fun to watch this play out.

I prefer my teams to stick to the mold the Brewers have taken but it's still a boatload of fun to watch another team I follow just go absolutely bat-**** crazy.

I think it's more likely the Brewers win the World Series in the next ten years than the Padres but boy, are both methods entertaining to watch.

i thought you were a twins fan?

Twins, Brewers, Padres. The three places I've lived the longest. Used to cheer on the Angels but I just can't do it anymore after watching them squander the two greatest baseball talents of my lifetime.

I make connections with my local teams and none of my fandoms conflict. I just like baseball.

It's super weird how people get so judgmental about fandom. We all do it our own ways; mine is being rooted in a community and growing affectionate for its local team.

And I kinda *am* a fan of most baseball teams. I like to see them operate well, have success, and do smart things. It increases my enjoyment of the sport.

Except the Yankees and White Sox. I cannot stand the White Sox. I even begrudgingly accept that the Cardinals are a great organization, even if I don't like them. But I legit hate the White Sox.

I would have thought that putting the Rob Lowe picture on there would have made it obvious I was just giving you a hard time.

Oh, hah. I'm a bit touchy about this, as people have blasted me for it over the years. If you're just giving me crap, bring it on. :D

But my fandom DOES get a little weird at times. In 2002, I was going to college at Long Beach State and went to a billion Angels games (was actually at the first rally monkey game, of all things). I cheered hard for the Twins but when they (inevitably) flounced, I didn't miss a beat and happily cheered on the Angels against the Giants; I was right there losing my mind with the rest of people during that game six comeback. Was actually at Disneyland watching the ESPN crew along with the game. What a weird world that was (Disney owned the Angels, Disneyland (duh), and ESPN at the time).

If only I knew the Twins postseason misery that was coming my way after that season...

I wish I could split loyalties between teams, I'd probably be a lot happier, but I have nothing but hate for any team that threatens my Brewers in any way.  Which means I hate every team but the Brewers.  I have more hate for some teams than others, Cardinals, Red Sox, etc, but in the end, I am only a fan of one team.  I am fiercely loyal, and do not, under any circumstance, understand how anyone could possibly be a fan of more than one team.  It just doesn't compute with my being.

And that's fair. But if you've lived all around the country as I have, it's hard not to become fond of many teams.

My first team was the Brewers. I listened to Ueck on the radio in the early-to-mid 80s. It was literally my first experience with baseball.

I moved to Minnesota in 86. As a nine year old, it was impossible not to get wrapped up with the 87 Twins.

Like so many others, I grew disenchanted with baseball after the strike and stopped watching it entirely for 4-ish years. Going to high school in San Diego and watching those 98 Padres (and having met Tony Gwynn personally, probably my favorite player of all time because he was just so kind and generous to all the kids surrounding him when I met him) is literally what brought my baseball fandom back to life.

Put into that context, it kinda makes sense why I like those three teams, right?

I never thought I would be a fan of another MLB team besides the Brewers. I eventually became a serious Mariners fan when they started to play better a few years ago and I realized I would never move back to Wisconsin. I found their long history of losing relatable, plus I had become attached to the city itself.

Brock, there’s not much better in sports than when a whole city gets wrapped up in a special team that is on a playoff run. If you are a sports fan and live in a city when that is happening, it’s near impossible not to get wrapped up in it. Except when Seattle had Seahawks fever and won that miracle playoff game against the Packers…that was brutal to be around.

I would encourage everyone to read "Rethinking Fandom: How to Beat the Sports-Industrial Complex at Its Own Game".  It makes more and more sense to follow more than one team.

I highly dislike Machado and would be happy to see him never get another hit in his career. After the 2018 playoffs when he intentionally clipped Jesus Aguilar’s foot running through 1B and his slide at 2B and grabs Orlando Arcia’s leg to breakup the play. Not to mention he didn’t even attempt to slide into into the base. He’s an unapologetically dirty player and I root hard against the Padres because of it, which is difficult because I like Hader so much and want to see him do well. And this all happened after he slid cleats high and clipped Justin Pedroia in the back of the knee which led to surgery and possibly cost him a few years of his career

Good for SD.  If it wins them a WS that's all that matters.  People remember championships not contracts.

People say this but its not true.  Consistency matters more than anything.  Nobody cared that the Marlins won a WS when they tore it down the next year.

When a team says they have a good problem in NFL training camp in having three good, capable QBs…. They may have 3, but they likely don’t have one.

If you've lived there and been a part of it, it definitely makes sense.  I've never understood the people that picked their favorite team out of a hat and have never even really watched them play a home game.  Always just felt like it's someone who wanted to be a contrarian.

Just looked it up on Amazon "But he doesn’t give up on professional sports. In the second half of the book, he proposes strategies to reclaim joy in fandom: rooting for players instead of teams, being a fair-weather fan, becoming an activist, and other clever solutions."

Yikes, I think I'll pass on this trainwreck.

I was going to school in Cincinnati in 1990 when the Reds swept the A’s in the WS. Brewers were in AL, so it was real easy to cheer for Cincinnati. I got hired as a runner for CBS (they had the tv then) so I had press credentials and got to be all over that park during games 1 and 2. Will always low-key like the Reds because of it. Lived in KC in 85 when they beat the Cardinals. Easy to like more than one team.

I can understand this. I would have been similar, but baseball changes made me give up the secondary teams.  My family moved to Illinois in the 80's and I started liking the Cubs because they were always on, they annoyed White Sox fans and were the natural rivals to the despicable Cardinals.   But now that the are in the same division as the Brewers, they have to lose.

I liked the Padres when I lived in Sandy Eggo in the 90's, but giving big money to Machado means they deserve a billy goat level curse.

From the late 80's until the Brewers joined the NL I was a Braves and Brewers fan.  Also all of my favorite professional sports teams have to start with the letter B.  No exceptions.

I would wager Marlins fans care.  Then again they have won 2 WS against the Brewers 53 years of trying.

They can never take championships away.

Consistency doesn't get you anywhere.  Nobody cares that the Brewers made the playoffs the last 4 out of 5 years outside of Brewer fans.  The Brewers still lost the last game of the season.

However, I appreciate that you just want the participation trophy and are happy just taking part.

Marlins attendance ranks…

2022: 29th (11.2 K)
2021: 30th
2019: 30th
2018: 30th
2017: 27th
2016: 27th
2015: 28th
2014: 27th
2013: 28th
2012: 18th (27.4 K)

It’s been over a decade since the Marlins weren’t bottom four in attendance and they’ve lost over 16,000 paying customers per game in that time.

If whatever Marlins fans remain still care, they have a weird way of showing it.

I agree, two WS Championships is better than zero.

You’d lose your wager about their fans still caring, though. They checked out the new stadium in 2012, then they checked out for the last decade. WS rings and all.

I'd argue there are no Marlins fans to crow about their two WS rings, and championships from half a generation ago have no bearing on fan support now and in the future - that organization has nonexistent fan support/loyalty and have only created short term support when they went on random postseason runs.  Locals will show up to the parade but then 6 months later they couldn't tell you the names of 5 players on the Marlins' roster.

No participation trophy for me, I don't play on the team.  If there were Marlins fans and they cared, they'd show up and buy tickets.  They never did though.
