With this move the Brewers could potentially have 6 1st round picks next year. 3 QO, comp, Chourio ROY and regular pick.

Hell, lets say 7. Black could finish top 3 as well!

Have to win ROY to get the pick not top 3.

I think initially, if I remember correctly, you would have gotten picks in the international draft for second or third, but I think when the international draft didn’t become a thing, that part went away.

The unofficial retiring of Gantner's number might be the most unserious thing I've ever seen. Either retire his number or don't. He retired 30 freaking years ago. Enough with this madness.

Who really cares what number he is assigned. Do we really need to worry about trivial things. Obviously, Rhys doesn’t. It must still be the off-season.

The slander of Jim Gantner in this thread is outrageous.

I guarantee you that in the future Gantner will still be fondly remembered by most Brewers fans and Rhys Hoskins will probably end up in the category of "Did that guy once play a season or two for the Brewers?"

If Gantner was from Ohio instead of WI I don't think people would be as fond of him.

Gantner was perfectly cromulent.  He played during a different age when batting average was the most important stat. He was fine there, just had no power and didn't draw walks so his OPS was sad.  His defense was solid but not splashy.  If he played today, I'm sure he would focus more on getting walks and extra bases.

He was never considered a liability when he played (maybe when he was in his late 30s) and in general was well liked by the fans.  He will always have a soft spot in my heart as I had his Aunt as my grade school teacher in 1982. We even watched a day playoff game in school (not sure how she swung that, but it was public school).

Full disclosure, late career Gantner was my favorite player during my youth baseball and early little league days because I too played second base and couldn’t hit for any power.

He was also one of the last links to those early 80s teams that my dad would tell me about. He was a role player, but they have a tendency to become beloved beyond their stat line if they stick around long enough.

First of all, nice use of the word  "cromulent" :)

I do not disagree with any of what you've written. I don't, however, think he is the type of player that should have his number retired (officially or unofficially). Walk of Fame? Yes, of course.

I agree, they should hand out the 17. Or just retire it. But diminishing Gantner's career as part of the exercise really shouldn't be the point. He clearly meant a lot to this franchise (and its fans) and I think that extended beyond his playing days. A personality in baseball can elevate the person beyond their playing career, case in point Mr. Bob Uecker. Add in Gantner being a small town Wisconsin guy and it just solidifies him. I don't think his number should be retired but I guess I somewhat understand the thought process, I just would rather they make it official or hand out the jersey. Pick one. Or maybe a sports franchise isn't a sports franchise without these unwritten quirky customs and it's all just part of the lore.

I have an uncle (well... my father's cousin...whatever that makes him to me) who is a small town WI guy who was probably a better player than Gumby at the same position and about the same age.  If labor situations were the same today as they were in 1979, I'm certain he would have stuck with the whole pro baseball thing and had a fun (and relatively lucrative) Owen Miller/Vinny Rottino type of career rather than choosing a more normal life after hitting .300 in AA and Spring Training for a couple years.

I've never asked him about Gantner, although I KNOW he thinks he is/was a better player than Al Newman😎😆

Cool

The fact that 17 is reserved or whatever is patently ridiculous.

There's ~90 other numbers to choose from.  Pick one.  Take 71.  Who gives a damn whether or not they give it out?

Then they should officially honor Gantner. I don't care whether #17 is retired or not but to simultaneously not give it out but also not honor the guy is weird. Either honor Gantner or don't.

My buddy said he saw a guy at the gym today wearing a Yount #17 jersey... 'zis one of you guys??

Like you've all said...

1 - Gumby isn't worthy (no disrespect!)

2 - Is #17 retired?? Why not? [We all agree he was average, at best, for a long time]

3 - Okay, but you really liked him as a Brewer icon... but, [go to step 1]

It would make him your cousin as well. If he's your father's 1st cousin (one of your grandparent's sibling's kids), he'd be your 2nd cousin. Aunts and uncles are siblings of your parents only. Siblings of your grandparents are your great aunts/uncles. It gets confusing after that lol.

First, Yount wore 19 (not saying you don't know that, hopefully you set your buddy straight).

Second, you're allowed an opinion but it's not worth much, same as me. You also don't get to self-determine the criteria that makes him worthy unless you are the controlling owner of the Milwaukee Brewers.

ETA: I say that only because clearly there is some other reason the team hasn't officially retired the number or allowed another player to wear it.

2nd cousin = your parent's 1st cousin's kid.  Your father's 1st cousin is your 1st cousin once removed -- the number of times removed signifying the number of generations apart you are.  My grandfather was an ace on all that stuff.

If all else fails, just quote the spectacular Dark Helmet line from Spaceballs.

Let's just see what happens after Hoskins walks it off in game 7 of the World Series this year.
