Man, that's 14 million in Junis and Sanchez?  That money could have been spent a lot better in JD Martinez.

What does JD Martinez do for our pitching staff? We absolutely needed another arm after the Burnes trade.

Martinez last year: 1.9 bWAR. Sanchez and Junis last year: 3.2 bWAR.

I think Junis is gonna surprise some folks.

As for Gary "Don't Call Me Alex" Sanchez, this would have excited me a lot more like 7 years ago. Worth a flier.

He's clearly an upgrade over Haase. If he or Contreras DH against LH, I guess this makes sense.  So what do we do with Haase? DFA him?  He's out of options and we now need two roster spots.

Quite possible he wasn't interested in signing with the Crew.

Players go where the money is. I’m sure Martinez (and Soler) are holding out for multi-year deals. If/when they decide they’ll accept a one year contract they will have no lack of suitors.

Given the Brewers M.O. to be active in free agency late  with one year guarantees, I’d bet they have open offers to both Martinez and Soler.

It’s somewhat out of character for Milwaukee to hand out a major league deal to Haase and now sign Sanchez. Gary is not really the kind of guy you want to DH every day, and if he’s going to play some catcher than there’s no need to carry Haase on the 26 man at all, and it’s essentially eating a million dollars .

The power potential from the DH position just looks totally leveled up compared to last season. Brewers DH in 2023 had 682 PA and 14 HR. Bauers vs RHP last year had 12 HR in 244 PA. Sanchez vs LHP last year had 9 HR in 79 PA. That's 21 HR in 323 PA.

I think Andrews was DFA'd for Junis if I saw correctly. Unless you mean a different 2nd move?

Not always (see Justin Turner). Martinez is a vet that has played for big market teams and has made a lot of money in his career. It seems quite plausible that he will be picky where he plays in 2024.

A good signing. Maybe Pat can make the whole greater than the sum of its parts, as Aristotle said, although even Aristotle would concede we need one more good starting pitcher.

Yep guessing he will be the DH, helps out his career with our catching wizardry.

He's had one good season offensively in the last four years with an OPS+ over 100.

I sure hope he's not the primary DH.  Maybe against LHP if Yelich needs a day off.

I expected at least one more move, but admit if I had guessed, this wouldn't have been in my top 10 guesses.

So in a normal 6-game week...Sanchez catches one, DH for 2 more with the other three games DH coming from the extra outfielders?

I really don't like this, it takes playing time from our young OF. Unless we have a crazy Contreras trade set up it make little sense to me. Sanchez was trash vs. RHP. We could have combined the Sanchez and Junis money (plus Ross, Haase, Ross, bauers, clarke) and signed Justin Turner and had some left over for a better starter. There are now like 33 guys who should have a 26 man roster spot. What is the plan.

Its great that Sanchez has some power but he really offers nothing else. Hard to get excited about a guy likely to have an OBP below .300 that costs 7 million.

I'm assuming Sanchez will catch 1-2 times a week and DH 2-3 times a week.

I hope that Haase and Bauers are not on the team regardless.

He can hit lefties. That will help win some games for us.

Yes, he's great against the 30% of pitchers who are LH.

Not good against the 70% of pitchers who are RH.

I'm generally pretty optimistic but I can't get excited about this one at all, especially if it takes playing time away from one of the youngsters.  Other than some nice homerun totals, he hasn't been good offensively in years.  This is a strange  one.

How well did we do against lefties last year?

The Bauers trade looks dumber by the day.

How many games did he play against lefties last year?

(Half as many as he played against RHP, and half as many PAs as against RHP.)

Maybe? We didn't really give up much.
