I've always been high on Wiemer and his issues just always seemed so... fixable. I really hope this change works and he's able to maintain his natural power and athleticism. If he turns into a legit .850 OPS player with good CF defense... well, wow.

It might have been a blessing in disguise that he was forced up before he was ready. Sometimes people have to fail to realize what they always did wouldn't work. That he learned it a year sooner gives him more time to fix it.

Too bad we can't see more than one swing.  I truly hope this is the direction he is now taking, but wonder why it took this long for someone to recognize that the old swing wasn't going to work with MLB pitching.

Having Wiemer meet his potential this year would be a HUGE plus moving forward.

Without claiming to have inside information Turbo, I would lean more towards the he needed to hit the wall first before he could make that big of a change, not that people didn't recognize it would probably cause him issues. And the fact could still abuse AAA is pretty potent evidence he was almost good enough to make the unconventional work.

Holy ****! Hopefully we have our legit RF or CF now, w/e position Jackson doesnt play.

Yup...don't care where he plays, that's going to be one helluva OF. And if he hits ~.240, he's going to be a 5 WAR player with his power and speed.

This is very encouraging! Now I just need him to say IITBSOML (I'm in the best shape of my life)

Supposedly, Giancarlo Stanton literally said that.

Definitely loving this.  Will be great to keep an eye on this in ST to see if he can sustain it and if it improved his results.

A key point IMO if he makes the OD roster or gets more work at AAA.

Just for reference, here is what his swing looked like last year:

”New swing”

”New pitch”

Yah…let me know when he actually starts producing. 9/10 the above people end up no better.

His swing is less busy…but whether that actually leads to any change remains to be seen. A lot of that is for timing. This new swing can look cool taking 70mph BP heaters, but his timing may suck just as much or worse now.

I cannot remember how many live swings it takes for a batter to have a change become permanent.  I thought it was 1K - 2K, but I don't remember.

I think Wiemer will start out in AAA.  Keeping his hands back and head on plane for off speed pitches is going to be key.  Although it is only one swing, it is much better than last year.

Trust the process, Joey... 👍

This is exactly why you don't give up on him after one rough year in the big leagues. He has all the tools and power to be an all-star, one simple mechanical adjustment could make all of the difference. Players with his tool set don't grow on trees.

I think when guys change their swing there is a typical progression.  Changes swing because they are struggling.  Gets better results initially.  People freak out.  Then they regress and end up where they were before or worse.  People freak out again.  The key then is do they lose faith and abandoned everything they've been working on or do they trust the work and commit to the new swing (pitch, arm slot, Yada yada).  That's when you typically see if it has staying power.  Can they get back up to a spot where they are better than they were before.  Batter changes something, pitchers make adjustments, batter struggles, but can they make more adjustments to get back ahead of the pitcher.  A constant battle!

I'm happy he's doing this and I do think it could have a pretty solid impact for him.

This would be a very prudent move, especially considering the guys we currently have. I was thinking a bit over the weekend how in the world we are going to find playing time for Yelich, Mitchell, Frelick, Chourio, and Weimer. It seemed likely Yelich would DH a lot to stay fresh, but maybe the answer is Wiemer in AAA for a month and reassess in May(I still think Yelich DH's a fair amount, let the 24 and unders chase fly balls).

Can it be much worse than last year?

Obviously, this could all change if Wiemer absolutely crushes the baseball all spring - but I've got to believe he'll start the year in AAA this year due to our OF situation, and I think getting some consistent AB's down there with his new swing will be good for him.  Hopefully, he'll be able to have some success down there, and regain some of that confidence at the plate that he might have lost last year struggling at the MLB level.

No...and I'm not saying it won't lead to anything. Just that I am not going to get super invested and excited until it produces something. Guys change their swing on the daily...he is very far from the only guy in camp repping a revamped swing. His issues are likely far past his swing. Though in his defense, his experience at AAA was pretty limited before his call to the bigs.

Yeah, their performance in STing is going to decide just about everything. Unless they're determined to stop his clock, if he hits, he'll play, if he doesn't, he'll start in AAA. I think Mitchell is as likely to start in AAA as the 26-man after a couple of years of injuries, but we'll see.

While this is all true, there are players that are too stubborn/fearful to change, particularly this early in their career. I'm excited about the change most of all because it demonstrates humility, courage, and work ethic from Wiemer. That's a really positive sign for a guy who is so gifted athletically.

I dont understand why Yelich being DH is still being mentioned on here.... Arnold said Yelich will be in LF, I dont see him being in DH spot much this season.
