The weather forecast for NYC tonight and tomorrow sounds very similar to what we had here the last few days. Rainy.

I wouldn’t be surprised to hear, even as early as tonight, that the Mets are taking advantage of the built in off day to play Friday when conditions are expected to be much better.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

Yeah they built in Friday as an off day for a reason so no need to try and play through crappy weather all day tomorrow. I’m just going to assume no game tomorrow.

Why doesn't MLB just make sure that all stadiums with a roof host on opening day?

There are enough teams with roofs/fair climates that the cold climate teams could spend the first 2-3 series on the road to give it more time to warm up before returning home. Don't know why they don't do that.

Because then Milwaukee would get more home games early and that would mean Selig had a hand in this and the world of baseball is going to end because of this.

Between domed stadiums and warm weather cities they could easily have the first 2 or 3 series take place there and almost never have a rainout. But I guess it's more important that people in Cincinnati and Minneapolis get to have a home game on opening day and sit outside in the 40 degree weather to watch baseball between the snowflakes.

The Brewers don't want a two week homestand at the end of March/early April and neither does any other team, including the warm weather ones.

I'm visiting my cardiologist at Froedtert early Friday morning, so I hope I'm back in time.

I do feel like they skew it towards the warm/domes but they can't just do it 100%.    I've never checked and my 'gut' on this has been a bit thrown the last few years as MKE has had more on the road lately.  But you can't just make some teams do 7-10 games on the road to start every year and you do have to toss them all an actual opening day some times.   So, if they haven't been skewing or quit skewing it they should got back to it.  But either way, don't think they can be as extreme as described here.

Good luck with both!

I don't think anyone said that every team with a roof or warm weather should start out with a 2 week homestand.  I'm talking about opening day series only.

Surely, most teams would be happy to play where they know they will be playing (roof or warm weather) rather than having a good shot at being snowed, rained, or frozen out of opening day games.

Oh, that makes sense. I think this is only the second year that they have tried to have all 30 teams playing on "opening day"?

I still suspect that it would add enough logistical complexity that they wouldn't want to bother with it, but you never know.

That got me thinking -- are there even enough stadiums to pull this off?

Roof: Milwaukee, Toronto, Seattle, Arizona, Texas, Houston, Tampa, Miami
Likely warm/dry-ish: San Diego, LA Dodgers, LA Angels, Atlanta

So they still come up 3 short, since 5/8 of the domed stadiums are already in warm climates. Maybe you can add the marginal ones like San Francisco, Kansas City, and St. Louis...maybe Baltimore/DC as well...but it's not unheard of to have bad weather in those locations at this time of year. And then you would have a ton of teams always starting their season on a west/southwest road trip.

Because it would make too much sense. I've wanted to see all teams open in either CA or a domed stadium for a long time and that way we avoid the stupid game-off-game setup we see on so many Opening Days.

Thanks.  Blood pressure's been a bit wonky since leaving the hospital.  Hoping he stabilizes things a bit.  I've been doing cardiac rehab lately with 20 minute on the treadmill and another 20 on a bike.  Keeps me tired.  🙂

There's a great 30 for 30 short about the MLB scheduling process (called "the Schedule Makers," I tĥink), and the gist is basically that MLB is really a difficult logistical sport. There are lots of rules about scheduling, and every team is allowed to submit preferences too. Building in the extra day is the solution because it still tends to allow Opening Day to be special without creating logistical issues elsewhere.

I am bummed to not get baseball tomorrow. But, in a weird way, I prefer getting three game days in a row, especially with the M and TH off days next week. I always hate playing on OD and then having a whole, baseball-less desert of a day right after.

That's impossible to avoid. Teams with outdoor stadiums will continue to leave that gap day after their home opener whether it is the first or 10th game of the season.

And that's fine, it's just won't be the second day of the season when over half the league doesn't play.
